  • The distributions of fluorescent whitening agents (FWA) in the water of the Yasu River and their tributaries flowing into Lake Biwa (Japan) were surveyed on winter and summer. The FWA fluxes had linear correlation with the corrected resident population in catchments of the tributaries of Yasu River. Therefore, the FWAs in the rivers come from domestic wastewater, and those fluxes in the tributaries depended on the human population of their catchments. As an application of the FWA indicating domestic wastewater, we could assess seasonal changes in the sources of dissolved organic matter in the tributaries.

  • Environmental polluting materials from road surface drainage are a significant nonpoint source influenced to the eutrophication of lake and ecosystems with a transport development in recent years. To elucidate the discharge characteristics, the changing patterns in concentrations of polluting materials such as suspended solid (SS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrogenous and phosphorus nutrients in drainage waters, were investigated during rainfall. Load variation of COD concentration in drainage water samples was closely related to that of SS concentration. This indicates that SS contained a greater part of organic matter. A quite difference between the past pavement and the new well-drainage pavement system was observed in the concentrations of SS and COD in drainage waters. Appreciable concentrations of nitrite and nitrate were determined in drainage waters. The present results indicate that the drainage water from road surfaces is a significant nonpoint source, and that the well-drainage pavement system introduced to skid prevention has an effect on the decreases of pollutants.

  • The marked increase in the number of environmental problems, combined with the increase in their intensity and spatial extent, has resulted in an ever-increasing need for constant monitoring. This is complicated by the occurrence of new and complicated environmental issues that often prevent a thorough understanding of the entire monitoring framework. In the present study, a diagrammatic method was developed to present the entire framework of a monitoring plan. The diagram was separated into three sections- "Problem Section", "Research Process and Data Section" and "Entities Section" - to clearly present the disparate relationships between monitoring objectives and the monitoring procedure. Notation of the diagrams was undertaken using Unified Modeling Language (UML). A hypothetical monitoring plan for an environmental problem was designed to assess usefulness of the diagrammatic method. The diagram was capable of reviewing and revising the monitoring plan and could be used to select a monitoring procedure according to the monitoring objectives of the plan. The results suggested that this diagrammatic method was effective for designing an appropriate monitoring plan for a given monitoring objective.

  • This numerical study aims to investigate the effect of cohesive sediment on turbulence structure due to density stratification. The transport model for cohesive sediment incorporated with flocculation model has been selected and calculates the concentration, fluid momentum, and turbulence. From the model results, it is known that suspension of sediment decreases turbulence intensity. It is also found that cohesive sediment has a relatively weak effect on turbulence damping compared to noncohesive sediment. The low settling velocity and more suspension of cohesive sediment are considered to be mechanisms of this behavior. Richardson number determined with results of this study quantitatively shows that cohesive sediment causes less stable density stratification condition and, as a result, the turbulence structure is less damped compared to the case of noncohesive sediment.

  • Fish communities in river networks provide significant ecosystem services that will likely decline under future land use and climate change. We developed a model that simulates the consequences to multiple populations of one or more fish species-a meta-community-from multiple stressors across a river network. The model is spatially-explicit and age-structured, with three components: habitat suitability; population dynamics, including species interactions; and movement across a spatial network. Although this model is simple, it can form the basis of fisheries assessments and may be incorporated into an integrated modeling system for watershed management and prediction.

  • A two-year survey on the insect fauna of Dokdo located at the eastern end of Korean territory, was carried out from 2009 to 2010. A total of 11 Orders 65 Families 131 Genera 133 Species of insects was reported to exist in Dokdo by Park et al. (2012). This study was focused on the collection of small insects (under 1 mm in body length) in Dokdo. Form the collection, the comparison of the species composition to past records in Dokdo was carried out.

  • Benthic macroinvertebrates were examined to elucidate community structures of a set of 9 shallow ponds from a total of 6 parks located in Seoul metropolitan area, Korea. The result showed that macroinvertebrates were diverse and abundant, and aquatic macrophyte provide habitat diversities in ponds. The differences among benthic macroinvertebrate community compositions seemed to be attributed to local biotic and abiotic interactions. We surveyed benthic macroinvertebrate, biotic (macrophyte), abiotic (turbidity, nutrient concentrations, conductivity, heavy metal concentration) and morphometric (area, depth) of the lentic systems. Generally, the benthic macroinvertebrates were dominated by Cloeon dipterum or Coenagrion sp.. Distribution of the aquatic macrophyte community was correlated with the species composition of macroinvertebrates. The result demonstrated a significant and positive relationship between habitat quality and macroinvertebrate composition.

  • Phenolic compounds are manufacturing by-products commonly found in industrial wastewater. The toxicity of high level phenolic compounds in wastewater threatens not only the aquatic organisms, but also many components of the adjacent ecosystem. One of the major light harvesting pigments in cyanobacteria is phycocyanin which can be rapidly and specifically degraded by external stimuli such as nutritional depletion or environmental stress. We employed the cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC 7120 as an indicator organism in estimating the pollution level by phenolic compounds. The phycocyanin content of the cyanobacterium decreased without significantly altering the total chlorophyll as the phenol concentration in a medium increased. We examined the phenol contamination level using the correlation of the phycocyanin content and the phenol concentration. Our results indicated that no significant pollution by phenolic compounds was found in several waterbodies in the vicinity of Daegu, South Korea.

  • The diel swarming of Moina macrocopa and the relationship between environmental factors were evaluated in a shallow reservoir. The littoral density of Moina macrocopa maintained low from night to noon, reached maximum density at the afternoon with compact swarms at the waters' edge, and dispersed after sunset. The recruitment of Moina macrocopa and changes of water temperature (r=0.709, p<0.001) and juvenile fish density (r=0.511, p=0.002) in the littoral zone showed a significant positive relationships. After the induction of diel horizontal migration toward littoral zone, therefore, direct juvenile fish predation pressure should be induced Moina macrocopa swarming.

  • Benthic macroinvertebrates were collected two times from 116 sites at the $1^{st}{\sim}4^{th}$ order streams in forest areas in Gyungsang province in late spring and late summer. The sample sites belonged to slightly and moderately polluted states. When communities were classified by the Self-Organizing Map (SOM), the gradient was observed according to degree of pollution. Within clusters of slightly polluted sites, however, seasonality was further observed. Scrapers, gatherer-collectors, and filterer-collectors were abundantly observed in late spring while shredders appeared more in late summer. The number of predator species increased in late summer. Behavior types were mostly clingers in two seasons. Community compositions at the moderately polluted sites were not much differentiated in different seasons. Gatherer-collectors and burrowers were dominantly collected in both seasons.
