  • Data on squid catches by the Korean jig fishery in sea blocks ($30'{\times}30'$), water temperatures at depth(30m, 50m and 100m) and zooplankton biomass in the East Sea from 1980 to 1999 were analyzed to examine the mechanism of formation of the high density stock area. Japanese common squid (Todarodes pacificus) catch in the East Sea was low in 1980s, while the catch was high in 1990s. The five sea blocks (No. 76, 82, 83, 87, 88) of the southern part in the eastern coastal waters of Korea showed high levels of percentage of total catch (35.1%), whereas the four sea blocks (No. 65, 71, 72, 78) of the coastal waters of Uleung Island showed high levels of percentage of CPUE (61.2%) for 20 years. Squid catches showed monthly fluctuations according to the vertical distribution of optimum water temperature for fishing ($14^{\circ}C{\sim}19^{\circ}C$). High total catch and high CPUE area matched well with $10^{\circ}C$ isothermal lines at 100m depth indicating northern limiting of Tsushima Warm Current, and temporal and spatial change in $10^{\circ}C$ isothermal line caused the change in total catch and CPUE. Horizontal distribution of zooplankton biomass by sea block was not matched well with those of total catch and CPUE, however pattern of time-series change in total zooplankton biomass was similar to that in total squid catch.

  • Commercially available duck-meat was subjected to proximate analysis. On a wet basis, the duck-meat contained 62.87, 17.05, 19.06 ana 1.02 percent of moisture, crude fat, crude protein and ash, respectively. Almost all the essential amino acids contained in the duck-meat protein, ana the tryptophan was the limiting one by amino acid analysis of GLC. An analysis of the fatty acid composition by GLC showed a relatively high concentration of oleic acid. There was also a considerable content of linoleic acid. The content of polyunsaturated fatty acids of duck-meat was 70.9% and the P/S ratio of fatty acids was 3.4. The cholesterol content in duck-meat was determined to be approximately 70. 5mg/100g ofm sample. According to blood analysis, it was understood that the content of phospholipids was relatively high, particulary in lecithin. ATP-phosphorus, at the higher temperature, was released faster than at the lower temperature, by two hours after postmortem. The ATPase activity of Myogibril was inhibited at the relatively high concentration of added EDTA and metallic ions, but the activity was very high in the lower concentrations. According to the cooking conditions, boiled duck-meat showed good digestion by pepsin. It was understood that the digestibility of duck meat was relatively high, so the duck-meat protein is good source of animal protein. Therefore, it is able to be recommended that duck-meat is good nitrogen source animal food.

  • High temperature stress in summer season at plastic house is a limiting factor for tomato fruit set and yield. This study was performed to assess the effects of gibberellic acid ($GA_3$) and 2,4-Dichlophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D) spray on fruit set, yield, and quality of tomato cv. 'Adoration'(Enza Zaden Co., Ltd.) under the plastic house in Hwacheon, 2011. Four concentrations (0-, 5-, 10- and $15mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) of $GA_3$, and three concentrations (0-, 5- and $10mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) 2,4-D were sprayed in early flowering of tomato in the plastic house, and fruit set, yield and quality characters were observed. The results showed that spray of $10mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ $GA_3$ significantly increased the fruit set by 14.2% than unsprayed. The spray of $GA_3$ significantly increased the marketable fruit number, fruit weight, and yield. The spray of 2,4-D on blossoms significantly affected the fruit set percentage, fruit weight, marketable fruit weight and yield, and the highest fruit set observed as 62.5% in combined spray of $GA_3$ and 2,4-D at each $5mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. Fruit size and total soluble solids significantly varied with the concentrations of $GA_3$ sprayed. The result indicates that the spray of $10mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ $GA_3$ and $5mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ 2,4-D can be more economic and effective to increase the fruit set, and yield in tomato under high temperature condition in plastic house.

  • In order to investigate water quality factors controlling chlorophyll-$a$ concentrations, the by-daily monitoring was conducted from February to November 2010 in 4 stations of Masan Bay. Seasonal variability in physico-chemical factors was mainly controlled by freshwater loading as a result of precipitation: chemical oxygen demand, suspended solids and nutrient concentrations rapidly increase during the heavy rainy season, whereas they decrease in the dry season. From late winter to mid spring, phosphorus and silica sources relative to Redfield ratio were probably functioned as limiting factor for phytoplankton flourishing in surface waters, but nitrogen concentration during mid-spring to autumn might be responsible for the increase of phytoplankton biomass. The multiple regression analysis revealed that variations in chlorophyll-$a$ concentration may be strongly correlated with changes of water temperature, chemical oxygen demand, dissolved inorganic phosphorus in spring, and salinity, chemical oxygen demand and precipitation in summer. Consequently, in the Masan Bay, a heavy rainfall event is an important factor to determine changes of biotic and abiotic factors, and in addition the dynamics of chlorophyll-$a$ concentration are strongly affected by changes of hydrological factors, especially water temperature, precipitation and nutrients.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of various garlic extracts on cholesterol synthesis in HepG2 cells. Raw garlic, grilled garlic, and freeze dried garlic were subjected to cold water extraction, and extracts were incubated at room temperature for 1 min or 60 min. The extracts were treated to HepG2 cells for 4 h, and cholesterol synthesis and mRNA expression level of HMG-CoA reductase were investigated. The alliin contents were reduced when garlic was incubated at room temperature for 60 min. Raw garlic extracts showed lower intracellular cholesterol contents compared to that of the control group. However, raw garlic extracts incubated for 60 min showed no differences compared to the control group. Freeze-dried garlic extract showed minimum intracellular triglyceride and cholesterol contents. Relative mRNA expression level of HMG-CoA reductase, a rate-limiting enzyme of cholesterol synthesis, decreased in the garlic extracts. Compared with 60 min, garlic extracts incubated for 1 min showed a reduced level of HMG-CoA reductase mRNA expression. The freeze-dried garlic extract reduced mRNA expression level of HMG-CoA reductase in a dose-dependent manner in cells treated with 5% of 0.2, 0.5, 0.8, 1.0, and 1.5 mg/mL in medium, and the effect was maxed out at dose of 5% garlic extract at 1.0 mg/mL in medium.

  • In this study, various types of nutrient models were tested by using two tears's water quality data collected from the stormwater wetland in Korea. Based on results, most important factor influencing nitrogen removal was hydraulic loading rate, which indicates that surface area of wetland is more important than its volumetric capacity, and model proposed by WEF was found to give a least error between measured and calculated values. For the phosphorus, in case assuming a power relationship between rate constant and temperature, the best prediction result were obtained, but temperature was most sensitive parameter affecting phosphorus removal. In addition, denitrification was always a limiting step for the nitrogen removal in this particular wetland mostly due to the lack of carbon source and high dissolved oxygen concentration. In this paper, several alternatives to improve nitrogen removal, including proper arrangement and designation of wetland elements and use of floating plants or synthetic fiber mat to control oxygen level and to capture the algal particles were proposed and discussed.

  • Oriental melon ($Cucumis$ $melo$ var. $makuwa$) is a popular and high-value market fruit cultivated in Korea. Consumers are becoming increasingly interested in oriental melon as a healthy diet over the past few years. However, the melons have relatively high quality loss because the fruit are mainly produced for a limited period of time in the summer season. Lack of the proper postharvest treatments and high temperature exposure at harvest or during distribution are the most critical environmental factors limiting postharvest life of fruit. This review focuses on the overview of current research studies for postharvest treatment and functional packaging technology of oriental melon in Korea. Major physiological problems of the harvest fruit include the ripening process in quality changes of the produce such as loss of weight, firmness, flavor, and decay during the storage periods. Low temperature at 7 to $10^{\circ}C$ with high relative humidity of 90 to 95% is the suitable environmental condition used to maintain the quality of fresh oriental melon. Controlled atmosphere (CA) storage or modified atmosphere (MA) packaging can be used as supplemental treatments to extend postharvest-life. For oriental melon, an optimum CA is currently recommended to be 2-3% oxygen and 5-10% carbon dioxide atmosphere. Precooling, pretreatments of ethylene action and functional packaging system can be applied to oriental melon after harvest in order to extend storage life. Major active packaging technologies are concerned with a selectively gas permeable film related to respiration of produce and the packaging applications of ethylene removal, antimicrobial, and antifogging substances to keep the effective freshness of fruit.

  • Three seasme cultivars were compared in viewpoints of ripening developments and yielding potentials per plant after the flowering date. On this study, timely ripening and yielding developments were checked separately with capsules and seeds which outcome from the flowers labelled at 30th of July, the maximum flowering stage. Mostly, size and dry weight developments were estimated and the results obtained are as follows; 1. "Early Russian" was recognized as an ideal cultivar with large sized capsule and high lipid contents. However, under the enough ripening periods and ripening conditions (temperature, lights, and nutrients, etc.), the cultivar has weakness on the capsule developments which is competed with seed developments as mean of sink concern. 2. "Suwon 5" was a high yielding cultivar under the proper ripening weather (F. ex. southern districts), but under the unfavorable ripening conditions the cultivar may have weakness of rapid yield decrease by comparatively later formation of seed weight than the capsule. Especially the cultivar has the very ripening characteristics adapting to southern districts which have higher temperature and later low limiting stage for sesame ripening. 3. "Black colored native" seasme cultivar showed lower yielding and later ripening characteristics among others. Also, under the unfavorable ripening conditions, the cultivar has the weakness of yield decrease. Even under the favorable conditions, the cultivar will still have the weakness which is not able to increase in yield, because the capsule development would be finished in size and dry weight too early to accept the later developments of seeds.e later developments of seeds.

  • The adsorption equilibrium, kinetic, and thermodynamic parameters of brilliant green adsorbed by coconut based granular activated carbon were determined from various initial concentrations ($300{\sim}500mg\;L^{-1}$), contact time (1 ~ 12 h), and adsorption temperature (303 ~ 323 K) through batch experiments. The equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed by Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Harkins-Jura, and Elovich isotherm models. The estimated Langmuir dimensionless separation factor ($R_L=0.018{\sim}0.040$) and Freundlich constant ($n^{-1}=0.176{\sim}0.206$) show that adsorption of brilliant green by activated carbon is an effective treatment process. Adsorption heat constants ($B=12.43{\sim}17.15J\;mol^{-1}$) estimated by the Temkin equation corresponded to physical adsorption. The isothermal parameter ($A_{HJ}$) by the Harkins-Jura equation showed that the heterogeneous pore distribution increased with increasing temperature. The maximum adsorption capacity by the Elovich equation was found to be much smaller than the experimental value. The adsorption process was best described by the pseudo second order model, and intraparticle diffusion was a rate limiting step in the adsorption process. The intraparticle diffusion rate constant increased because the dye activity increased with increases in the initial concentration. Also, as the initial concentration increased, the influence of the boundary layer also increased. Negative Gibbs free energy ($-10.3{\sim}-11.4kJ\;mol^{-1}$), positive enthalpy change ($18.63kJ\;mol^{-1}$), and activation energy ($26.28kJ\;mol^{-1}$) indicate respectively that the adsorption process is spontaneous, endothermic, and physical adsorption.

  • To investigate the long-term variation characteristics of nutrients in the east coast of Korea, water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and nutrients were measured at three stations of Sokcho, Jukbyeon and Gampo coasts for five years from 2013 to 2017. For five years, the water temperature of the East Sea coast was in the range of $1.2{\sim}28.8^{\circ}C$, the salinity was in the range of 30.63~34.79 and the dissolved oxygen (DO) was in the range of 3.53~7.64 mL/L. Distribution and variation of the water environment factors in the study area were determined by the vertical stratification of water column and distribution of water temperature. The high DO concentration in Sokcho coast From 2015 to August 2016 is presumed to be the result of the southward inflow of North Korean Cold Water (NKCW). Concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN, $NH_4-N+NO_2-N+NO_3-N$) ranged $0.11{\sim}24.19{\mu}M$, phosphate concentration ranged $0.01{\sim}1.75{\mu}M$, and silicate ranged $0.17{\sim}32.80{\mu}M$. The N:P ratio was in the range of 0.7~54.3 (mean 15.2) and the N:P slope was in the range of 11.67~13.75. The N:P ratios in this study were lower than the Redfield ratio (16), indicating that nitrate did act as a limiting factor in phytoplankton growth. The correlation ($R^2$) of total N:P ratio was as high as 0.95, indicating that the effect of the surrounding land or non-point sources was not significant. In conclusion, the spatial and temporal variation of nutrients in the east coast of Korea was determined by the vertical mixing of water mass with thermocline and mainly affected by physical factors such as influx of external water masses and coastal upwelling, and the influences from inflows from the land were minimal.
