  • Approximately 5 percent of infective endocarditis are limited to the right side of the heart, the tricuspid valve being the usual site of involvement. Usually there is no underlying cardiac disease, and the vegetations occur on previously normal tricuspid leaflets. This paper reports a case of bacterial endocarditis involving the bio-tricuspid valve in a patient with tetralogy of Fallot, and who required prosthetic valve replacement in addition to surgical therapy for the congenital lesions.

  • There are various researches on MPEG techniques. MPEG technique is used to digital TV(DTV) and internet image communication. Connection method between server and client is usually using wire. Applications may be expanded, if wireless technology is used between server and client system. In this paper, Bluetooth is used for connection method between server and client. Bluetooth offers fast and reliable transmissions of both voice and data over the globally available 2.4GHz ISM (Industrial, Scientific and Medical) band. One of the major application purposes of Bluetooth is the cable replacement for mobile and peripheral devices. Bluetooth has the advantage of small size, low power and low cost. It has the disadvantage of limited bandwidth and limited range. In order to transfer effectively image Information between server and client using Bluetooth, we apply MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 image compression techniques and the results are compared with each other.

An Overview of Bootstrapping Method Applicable to Survey Researches in Rehabilitation Science

  • Background: Parametric statistical procedures are typically conducted under the condition in which a sample distribution is statistically identical with its population. In reality, investigators use inferential statistics to estimate parameters based on the sample drawn because population distributions are unknown. The uncertainty of limited data from the sample such as lack of sample size may be a challenge in most rehabilitation studies. Objects: The purpose of this study is to review the bootstrapping method to overcome shortcomings of limited sample size in rehabilitation studies. Methods: Articles were reviewed. Results: Bootstrapping method is a statistical procedure that permits the iterative re-sampling with replacement from a sample when the population distribution is unknown. This statistical procedure is to enhance the representativeness of the population being studied and to determine estimates of the parameters when sample size are too limited to generalize the study outcome to target population. The bootstrapping method would overcome limitations such as type II error resulting from small sample sizes. An application on a typical data of a study represented how to deal with challenges of estimating a parameter from small sample size and enhance the uncertainty with optimal confidence intervals and levels. Conclusion: Bootstrapping method may be an effective statistical procedure reducing the standard error of population parameters under the condition requiring both acceptable confidence intervals and confidence level (i.e., p=.05).

Effect of calcium hydroxide on inflammatory root resorption and ankylosis in replanted teeth compared with other intracanal materials: a review

  • Calcium hydroxide (CH) is the gold-standard intracanal dressing for teeth subjected to traumatic avulsion. A common complication after the replantation of avulsed teeth is root resorption (RR). The current review was conducted to compare the effect of CH with that of other intracanal medications and filling materials on inflammatory RR and replacement RR (ankylosis) in replanted teeth. The PubMed and Scopus databases were searched through June 2018 using specific keywords related to the title of the present article. The materials that were compared to CH were in 2 categories: 1) mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and endodontic sealers as permanent filling materials for single-visit treatment, and 2) Ledermix, bisphosphonates, acetazolamide, indomethacin, gallium nitrate, and enamel matrix-derived protein (Emdogain) as intracanal medicaments for multiple-visit management of avulsed teeth prior to the final obturation. MTA can be used as a single-visit root filling material; however, there are limited data on its efficacy due to a lack of clinical trials. Ledermix and acetazolamide were comparable to CH in reducing RR. Emdogain seems to be an interesting material, but the data supporting its use as an intracanal medication remain very limited. The conclusions drawn in this study were limited by the insufficiency of clinical trials.

Pyrocarbon hemiarthroplasty and the shoulder: biomechanical and clinical results of an emerging treatment option

  • While shoulder hemiarthroplasty is still used to treat young patients with shoulder pathology, the use of this procedure has substantially declined in recent years due to its significant complication profile. Glenoid wear with arthrosis is one of the major postoperative complications following shoulder hemiarthroplasty, and efforts to prevent this complication led many scientists to explore alternative weight-bearing surfaces on arthroplasty implants to decrease joint wear and improve patient outcomes. Pyrolytic carbon, or pyrocarbon, is a material that has better biocompatibility, survivorship, strength, and wear resistance compared to the materials used in traditional shoulder hemiarthroplasty. Pyrocarbon implants have been used in orthopedics for over 50 years; recently, their utility in shoulder hemiarthroplasty has garnered much interest. The purpose behind the use of pyrocarbon in shoulder hemiarthroplasty is to decrease the risk of progressive glenoid wear, especially in young active patients in whom joint preservation is important. Promising survivorship and outcomes have been demonstrated by recent studies, including limited glenoid wear following pyrocarbon hemiarthroplasty. Nevertheless, these clinical studies have been limited to relatively small case series with limited long-term follow-up. Accordingly, additional research and comparative studies need to be conducted in order to properly assess the therapeutic efficacy and value of pyrocarbon hemiarthroplasty.

유전자 알고리즘의 수렴 속도 향상을 통한 효과적인 로봇 길 찾기 알고리즘 (Effective Robot Path Planning Method based on Fast Convergence Genetic Algorithm)

  • 유전자 알고리즘은 초기 해 집합을 대상으로 해 집합의 평가와 유전자 연산자의 적용, 자연 선택 등의 과정을 반복하여 최적 해를 찾는 탐색 알고리즘이다. 유전자 알고리즘을 설계할 때 사용한 선택 전략, 세대교체 방법, 유전자 연산자 등은 유전자 알고리즘의 탐색 효율성에 영향을 준다. 본 논문에서는 시간 제약이 있는 상황에서의 로봇 경로 탐색을 위해 기존의 유전자 알고리즘보다 빠르게 수렴하는 유전자 알고리즘을 제안한다. 로봇 경로 탐색 시 긴급한 상황에서 유전자 알고리즘은 연산을 위한 충분한 시간을 확보하지 못 하게 되고, 이는 최종적으로 찾아낸 경로의 질을 떨어뜨린다. 제안하는 알고리즘은 빠른 수렴을 위한 선택 전략, 세대교체 방법을 사용하였으며, 유전자 연산자로는 전통적인 교차, 돌연변이 외에 경로의 길이를 줄이기 위한 단축 연산자를 추가로 사용하였다. 이를 통해 제안하는 알고리즘은 적은 세대 수에도 빠르게 짧은 경로를 찾아낸다.

DSDV 기반의 에너지 효율적 Ad-hoc 라우팅 프로토콜 (An Energy-Efficient Ad-hoc Routing Protocol Based on DSDV)

  • Ad-hoc 무선 네트워크 환경에서 에너지 보유량이 상대적으로 적은 단말은 생존기간이 짧아진다. 단말의 활동이 정지하면 해당 단말을 경유하는 최적의 라우팅 경로도 함께 사라지기 때문에 새로운 대체 경로를 생성해야 한다. 이러한 대체 경로의 생성은 더 많은 단말의 에너지 소모를 촉진하여 활동을 정지하는 단말의 수를 증가시키고, 네트워크의 성능을 저하시킨다. 따라서 에너지 보유량이 적은 단말은 라우팅 경로 생성에 참여시키지 말아야 한다. 본 논문에서는 정지하는 단말의 수를 억제할 수 있도록 단말들의 에너지 보유량을 고려한 새로운 라우팅 프로토콜을 제안한다. 이 라우팅 프로토콜에서는 가능한 경로 각각에서 최소 에너지를 보유한 단말의 에너지 보유량($E_{m}$)에 근거하여 경로를 설정한다. 즉, 흡수가 동일하면 최소 에너지 보유량($E_{m}$)이 최대인 경로를 선택함으로써 에너지 보유량이 적은 단말의 생존기간을 연장한다. 시뮬레이션을 통하여 제안한 프로토콜이 단말의 생존기간을 연장하고, 그것이 대체 경로 생성을 줄임으로써 네트워크의 성능 저하를 방지하는데 효과적임을 보인다.

Hybrid SSD 시스템을 위한 재사용 간격 기반 블록 교체 기법 (Block Replacement Scheme based on Reuse Interval for Hybrid SSD System)

  • 최근 SSD(Solid State Drive)는 빠른 읽기/쓰기, 저전력 등 다양한 장점을 가지고 있어 스마트폰, 노트북, 서버 등의 저장장치로 사용 영역이 확대되고 있다. 하지만, 플래시 메모리의 읽기 및 쓰기의 비대칭적 성능과 제한된 쓰기 횟수가 SSD의 수명을 단축시키는 문제가 있어서 캐쉬(cache)로 사용되는 SSD의 내용을 변경시키는 블록 교체 기법(block replacement policy)이 매우 중요하다. Hybrid SSD의 수명을 향상 시킬 수 있는 방법 중 하나로 LARC 기법이 있으나, LARC는 SSD블록 관리를 위해 기존 LRU알고리즘을 사용하기 때문에 빈번히 참조되는 블록이 오래된 블록 대신 교체되어 SSD 미스율을 증가시킴으로써 시스템의 성능이 저하되는 문제점이 발생한다. 따라서, 본 논문에서는 다양한 데이터 읽기, 쓰기 환경에 효과적으로 대응하기 위해 블록의 재사용 간격을 고려한 새로운 블록 교체 기법을 제안한다. 제안된 기법은 블록 재사용 간격(Reuse interval)과 Age를 기반으로 최근성(Recency)을 추출하고 참조빈도(Frequency)를 같이 고려하여 블록을 교체한다. Workload 기반 Trace를 이용한 실험결과, 제안하는 기법은 여러가지의 기존 블록 교체 기법 및 LARC 알고리즘과 비교하여 쓰기 횟수 감소와 히트율 향상을 통해 시스템 성능과 SSD의 수명을 연장시킨다.

Risk Factors for Breast Cancer, Including Occupational Exposures

  • The knowledge on the etiology of breast cancer has advanced substantially in recent years, and several etiological factors are now firmly established. However, very few new discoveries have been made in relation to occupational risk factors. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has evaluated over 900 different exposures or agents to-date to determine whether they are carcinogenic to humans. These evaluations are published as a series of Monographs (www.iarc.fr). For breast cancer the following substances have been classified as "carcinogenic to humans" (Group 1): alcoholic beverages, exposure to diethylstilbestrol, estrogen-progestogen contraceptives, estrogen-progestogen hormone replacement therapy and exposure to X-radiation and gamma-radiation (in special populations such as atomic bomb survivors, medical patients, and in-utero exposure). Ethylene oxide is also classified as a Group 1 carcinogen, although the evidence for carcinogenicity in epidemiologic studies, and specifically for the human breast, is limited. The classification "probably carcinogenic to humans" (Group 2A) includes estrogen hormone replacement therapy, tobacco smoking, and shift work involving circadian disruption, including work as a flight attendant. If the association between shift work and breast cancer, the most common female cancer, is confirmed, shift work could become the leading cause of occupational cancer in women.
