  • This paper considers a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) power line communication (PLC) network where interference alignment (IA) technique is used to mitigate the interference that arises in multi-user networks. IA as a precoding technique requires perfect channel state information (CSI) to achieve maximum multiplexing gain. Due to the common-mode reception at the receiver ports, we assume imperfect CSI for the IA precoding design. Here, the CSI is quantized and sent via feedback to the transmit ports. For different levels of CSI quantization, we evaluate the performance of various IA algorithms via Monte Carlo simulations. Simulation results reveal the superior performance of the proposed scheme due to common-mode reception in IA MIMO PLC networks. It is shown that for a quantization level of 5 bits, the CM reception improves the sum-rate by up to 70%.

  • This paper presents a novel user selection method based on the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), which is approximated using limited feedback data at the base stations (BSs) of multiple user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems. In the proposed system, the codebook vector index, the quantization error obtained from the correlation between the measured channel and the codebook vector, and the measured value of the largest singular value are fed back from each user to the BS. The proposed method not only generates precoding vectors that are orthogonal to the precoding vectors of the previously selected users and are highly correlated with the codebook vector of each user but also adopts the quantization error in approximating the SINR, which eventually provides a significantly more accurate SINR than the conventional SINR-based user selection techniques. Computer simulations show that the proposed method enhances the sum rate of the conventional SINR-based methods by at least 2.4 (2.62) bps/Hz when the number of transmit antennas and number of receive antennas per user terminal is 4 and 1(2), respectively, with 100 candidate users and an SNR of 30 dB.

  • In this paper, we investigate the scheduling and power allocation for coordinated multi-point transmission in downlink long term evolution advanced (LTE-A) systems, where orthogonal frequency division multiple-access is used. The proposed scheme jointly optimizes user selection, power allocation, and modulation and coding scheme (MCS) selection to maximize the weighted sum throughput with fairness consideration. Considering practical constraints in LTE-A systems, the MCSs for the resource blocks assigned to the same user need to be the same. Since the optimization problem is a combinatorial and non-convex one with high complexity, a low-complexity algorithm is proposed by separating the user selection and power allocation into two subproblems. To further simplify the optimization problem for power allocation, the instantaneous signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and the average SINR are adopted to allocate power in a single cell and multiple coordinated cells, respectively. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can improve the average system throughput and the cell-edge user throughput significantly compared with the existing schemes with limited feedback.

  • A considerable number of empirical studies have been conducted into the impact of graphical presentation of information on decision making performance. Very limited attention has been, however, devoted to the role of graphs as a means of delivering feedback. This paper investigated this issue by varying the presentation formats of outcome feedback in time series forecasting contexts. It was found that overall feedback was not decision-effective. Even enlarged and more salient feedback was of little value to overcome the conservative behavior. The results doubted the efficacy of graphical feedback in the design of EIS/DSS. Feedback did not appear to be a simple mechanism and further research is required to investigate its cognitive processes.

  • In order to optimize a learning effect in mathematics, the results of the educational assessment must be effectively used by both teachers and students. The teacher using technology to provide students with performance feedback is becoming more prevalent in educational contexts worldwide but concern arises over the form of that feedback and the effects it has upon students' achievements. Also, feedback takes considerable time for teachers but their instructional time is limited. For these reasons, it is a significant matter how to select items effectively in order to give feedback to students after an assessment. In this study, we introduce the systematic selection method of feedback items using the regression analysis in order to provide effective feedback to students by teachers.

  • This study investigated the feasibility and effectiveness of incorporating oral corrective feedback into the content-based business English writing class. Two types of oral corrective feedback, recasts and metalinguistic feedback, were integrated into business English writing classes to help low intermediate-proficiency Korean university students improve the ability to use the simple past, present progressive, and present perfect tenses correctly in their written production. Prior to the treatments, the subjects had basic grammatical knowledge of the target verb tenses, but they had only limited control over them in their written production. Three groups were formed: recast group that received corrective recasting, metalinguistic group that received metalinguistic clues, and control group that received no oral corrective feedback. The study demonstrated that it was feasible to incorporate recasts and metalinguistic feedback into content-based business English writing classes and that metalinguistic feedback had greater and more endurable effects than recasts on promoting the correct use of the target verb tenses in written production. It can be concluded that oral corrective feedback, metalinguistic feedback in particular, can be used in the business English writing classroom to help students gain greater control over already partially acquired forms and therefore improve their writing accuracy.

  • In this paper, we propose a codebook-based interference alignment (IA) scheme in the constant multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channel especially for the uplink scenario. In our proposed scheme, we assume cooperation among base stations (BSs) through reliable backhaul links so that global channel knowledge is available for all BSs, which enables BS to compute he transmit precoder and inform its quantized index to the associated user via limited rate feedback link. We present an upper bound on the rate loss of the proposed scheme and derive the scaling law of the feedback load to maintain a constant rate loss relative to IA with perfect channel knowledge. Considering the impact of overhead due to training, cooperation, and feedback, we address the effective degrees of freedom (DOF) of the proposed scheme and derive the maximization of the effective DOF. From simulation results, we verify our analysis on the scaling law to preserve the multiplexing gain and confirm that the proposed scheme is more effective than the conventional IA scheme in terms of the effective DOF.
