Engineering criticality analysis on an offshore structure using the first- and second-order reliability method

  • Due to the uncertainties related to the flaw assessment parameters, such as flaw size, fracture toughness, loading spectrum and so on, the probability concept is preferred over deterministic one in flaw assessment. In this study, efforts have been made to develop the reliability based flaw assessment procedure which combines the flaw assessment procedure of BS7910 and first-and second-order reliability methods (FORM/SORM). Both crack length and depth of semi-elliptical surface crack at weld toe were handled as random variable whose probability distribution was defined as Gaussian with certain means and standard deviations. Then the limit state functions from static rupture and fatigue perspective were estimated using FORM and SORM in joint probability space of crack depth and length. The validity of predicted limit state functions were checked by comparing it with those obtained by Monte Carlo simulation. It was confirmed that the developed methodology worked perfectly in predicting the limit state functions without time-consuming Monte Carlo simulation.

Safety analysis of nuclear containment vessels subjected to strong earthquakes and subsequent tsunamis

  • Nuclear power plants under expansion and under construction in China are mostly located in coastal areas, which means they are at risk of suffering strong earthquakes and subsequent tsunamis. This paper presents a safety analysis for a new reinforced concrete containment vessel in such events. A finite element method-based model was built, verified, and first used to understand the seismic performance of the containment vessel under earthquakes with increased intensities. Then, the model was used to assess the safety performance of the containment vessel subject to an earthquake with peak ground acceleration (PGA) of 0.56g and subsequent tsunamis with increased inundation depths, similar to the 2011 Great East earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Results indicated that the containment vessel reached Limit State I (concrete cracking) and Limit State II (concrete crushing) when the PGAs were in a range of 0.8-1.1g and 1.2-1.7g, respectively. The containment vessel reached Limit State I with a tsunami inundation depth of 10 m after suffering an earthquake with a PGA of 0.56g. A site-specific hazard assessment was conducted to consider the likelihood of tsunami sources.

  • 터보프롭 엔진(PT6A-62)의 정상상태 및 동적 성능모사를 위한 프로그램을 개발하였다. 특히 이 프로그램은 Flat-rated 성능특성과 압축기서지 및 압축기터빈 입구제한온도 초과 방지를 위한 한도제어 알고리즘을 포함하였다. 해석오차를 최소화 하기 위해 조합 오차 값을 이용한 구성품 성능 데이터의 보간 방법과 온도의 함수로서 계산된 정압비열가 비열비가 사용되었다. 개발된 정상상태 성능해석 프로그램은 고도, 비행속도, 블리드유량, 흡입구온도 및 압력, 제한출력등의 여러 조건을 고려 할 수 있으며, 천이상태 성능해석 프로그램은 일반모드와 압축기 서지 방지 모드, 터빈 제한온도 초과방지 모드로 선택하여 해석을 수행할 수 있도록 구성하였다.

신뢰성지수를 이용한 효율적인 발파설계 (An Efficient Blast Design using Reliability Index)

  • The actual ground vibrations due to NATM and foundation blasting at Seoul(weathered rock), Pusan(weathered rock) and Youngkwang(quartz andesite) have been measured, and the data were analyzed using reliability index($\beta$) to determinate the vibration equations and the maximum charge weight for efficient blast. These were suggested with the division of ultimate limit state($\beta$=0), serviceability limit state($\beta$=1.28) and safety state($\beta$=3), respectively. The reliability index 0 mean 50% data line obtained by the least squares best-fit line. The reliability index 1.28 and 3 represent bounds below 90% and 99.9% of the data, respectively. In this study, reliability index $\beta$=1.28 with security and economy was suggested. The maximum charge weight equations for efficient blast were obtained in W=(Vc/384.90)1.5151.D3(Seoul), W=(Vc/579.82)1.4706.D3(Pusan). W=(Vc/1654.01)1.3456.D3(Youngkwang), and the blast vibration equatiions in V=385(SD)-1.98(Seoul), V=580(SD)-2.04(Pusan), V=1654(SD)-2.23(Youngkwang), respectively. From this study, inference and analysis methods of vibration equations using reliability theory were established.

  • A hybrid structural reliability analysis method that integrates a commercial finite element program and a reliability analysis algorithm is proposed to estimate the safety of real structures in this paper. Since finite element method (FEM) is most commonly and widely used in the analysis and design practice of real structures, it appears to be necessary to use general FEM program in the structural reliability analysis. In this case, simple conventional reliability methods cannot be used because the limit state function can only be expressed in an algorithmic form. The response surface method(RSM)-based reliability algorithm with the first-order reliability method (FORM) found to be ideal in this respect and is used in this paper. The intention of use of RSM is to develop, albeit approximately, an explicit expression of the limit state function for real structures. The applicability of the proposed method to real structures is examined with help of the example in consideration of a concrete dam. Both the strength and serviceability limit states are considered in this example.

Comparison of monotonic and cyclic pushover analyses for the near-collapse point on a mid-rise reinforced concrete framed building

  • The near-collapse performance limit is defined as the deformation at the 20% drop of maximum base shear in the decreasing region of the pushover curve for ductile framed buildings. Although monotonic pushover analysis is preferred due to the simple application procedure, this analysis gives rise to overestimated results by neglecting the cumulative damage effects. In the present study, the acceptabilities of monotonic and cyclic pushover analysis results for the near-collapse performance limit state are determined by comparing with Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA) results for a 5-story Reinforced Concrete framed building. IDA is performed to obtain the collapse point, and the near-collapse drift ratios for monotonic and cyclic pushover analysis methods are obtained separately. These two alternative drift ratios are compared with the collapse drift ratio. The correlations of the maximum tensile and compression strain at the base columns and beam plastic rotations with interstory drift ratios are acquired using the nonlinear time history analysis results by the simple linear regression analyses. It is seen that these parameters are highly correlated with the interstory drift ratios, and the results reveal that the near-collapse point acquired by monotonic pushover analysis causes unacceptably high tensile and compression strains at the base columns, as well as large plastic rotations at the beams. However, it is shown that the results of cyclic pushover analysis are acceptable for the near-collapse performance limit state.

Flutter reliability analysis of suspension bridges based on multiplicative dimensional reduction method

  • A reliability analysis method is proposed in this paper based on the maximum entropy (MaxEnt) principle in which constraints are specified in terms of the fractional moments instead of integer moments. Then a multiplicative dimensional reduction method (M-DRM) is introduced to compute the fractional moments. The method is applicable for both explicit and implicit limit state functions of complex structures. After two examples illustrate the accuracy and efficiency of this method in comparison to the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS), the method is used to analyze the flutter reliability of suspension bridge. The results show that the empirical formula method in which the limit state function is explicitly represented as a function of variables is only a too conservative estimate for flutter reliability analysis but is not accurate adequately. So it is not suitable for reliability analysis of bridge flutter. The actual flutter reliability analysis should be conducted based on a finite element method in which limit state function is implicitly represented as a function of variables. The proposed M-DRM provide an alternate and efficient way to analyze a much more complicated flutter reliability of long span suspension bridge.

기능수행수준과 응답수정계수 (Serviceability Limit State and Response Modification Factors)

  • 도로교설계기준 내진설계편은 붕괴방지수준의 확보를 설계절차에 의해 규정하고 있는 반면 기능수행수준의 확보에 대한 요구사항은 명확하게 제시하고 있지 않다. 붕괴방지수준의 확보를 위해 기본적으로 제시된 설계방법은 응답수정계수를 사용하는 스펙트럼해석법으로, 기능수행수준은 설계과정에 적용되는 위험도계수와 응답수정계수에 의해 결정 되어진다. 위험도계수는 교량의 중요도에 따라 단순하게 적용할 수 있으나 중약진지역에서의 응답수정계수 적용은 설계조건에 따라 다른 결과를 갖게 된다. 이 연구에서는 중약진지역의 일반 도로교량을 대상으로 내진설계를 수행하여 기능수행수준의 결정과정을 검토하고, 이 결과를 토대로 기능수행수준의 확보와 관련하여 내진설계편에 보완해야 하는 사항을 제시하였다.

  • 본 연구에서는 구조물의 사용성 한계상태와 유한요소 해석 결과를 기초한 랜덤 진동 이론에 의한 확률적 신뢰성 해석 방법에 대해 연구하였다. 한계상태 모형은 보다 실제적인 방사능 누출 한계 균열에 대한 사용성 한계상태로 정의하여 연구하였다. 차폐구조물은 SAP V-2를 이용하여 3차원 유한요소 해석을 하였으며, 본 연구에 적합하게 수정 개발한 HRAS 신뢰성 프로그램으로 신뢰성 해석을 수행하였다. 본 연구에서는 하중조합 설계규준 보정 기법을 이용하여 국내의 철근콘크리트 차폐 구조물에 적합한 하중계수를 제안하였으며, 현행 ASME 규준과 비교하였다. 제안한 하중계수는 시방서 목적과 잘 일치하며, 한계상태 확률이 일관성 있음을 입증하였다.

비교상태 개념을 이용한 흙-수분 특성곡선 평가 (Soil-water Characteristic Curve Assessment Using a Reference State Concept)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 불포화토의 거동을 대변하는 흙-수분 특성곡선을 결정하는 데 있어서 액성한계상태를 이용한 비교상태접근법(reference state approach)의 적용 가능성을 확인하고 이를 바탕으로 하는 예측방법을 제안하는 데 있다. 세립잔적토를 사용하여 각기 다른 간극비로 다짐된 여러 개의 시료로부터 흙-수분 특성곡선을 구하였다. 실험결과를 바탕으로, 흙-수분 특성곡선을 예측하는 데 있어서 액성한계상태를 비교상태로 사용할 수 있음을 증명하였다. 마지막으로, Fredlund와 Xing(1994)이 제안한 흙-수분 특성곡선식을 사용하여 실험결과를 회귀분석 함으로서 액성한계를 비교상태로 하여 세립잔적토의 흙-수분 특성곡선을 예측할 수 있는 방법을 제안하였다.
