Luminescence properties of a new $Tb^{3+}$ ion activated long persistent phosphor (새로운 $Tb^{3+}$ 이온 활성 축광성 형광체의 발광 특성)

  • A new long persistent phosphors of $CaZrO_3$ was synthesized at high temperature with weak reduction atmosphere by a traditional solid state reaction method. Photoluminescence spectra analysis showed that the $CaZrO_3$ doped with $Tb^{3+}$ emitted green-yellow emission caused by the energy level transition from the $^5D_3$ and $^5D_4$ to $^7F_1{\sim}^7F_6$. The main emission spectra of 542 nm peak by the $^5D_4{\rightarrow}^7F_5$ transition was revealed through synthesizing at high temperature in $N_2$ gas atmosphere. The afterglow emission spectra of $CaZrO_3:Tb^{3+}$ long persistent phosphores arise at 546 nm peak of narrow range. After the 254 nm ultraviolet light excitation source was switched off, the green-yellow long persistent phosphor can be observed which could last for 8 h in the limit of light perception of dark-adapted human eyes ($0.32\;mcd/m^2$).

Degradation Kinetics of Three Veterinary Antibiotics in Composted and Stockpiled Manure

  • Two typical animal waste management practices, composting and stockpiling, were evaluated for their effect on the degradation of three veterinary antibiotics (VAs), chlortetracycline (CTC), tylosin (TYL), and monensin (MNS). The VAs were applied to horse manure plots subject to composting or stockpiling, and core samples were collected over a period of time. Selected buffer solutions were used to extract the VAs and analysis for concentration was conducted with solid phase extraction (SPE) followed by high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS/MS) technique. The VAs demonstrated rapid dissipation within ten days followed by a gradual decrease in concentration until the end of the experimental period (141 days). All three VAs degraded more rapidly in the composting samples than in the stockpiling samples, particularly between 20 and 60 days of the observation period. Degradation of the three VAs generally followed a first-order kinetic model, and a fitted model with a calculated rate constant was determined for each treatment. TYL in composting showed the fastest degradation, with a calculated rate constant of $0.91day^{-1}$; the slowest degradation was exhibited by MNS in stockpiling, with rate constant of $0.17day^{-1}$. Calculated correlation coefficients ranged from 0.89 to 0.96, indicating a strong correlation between measured concentrations and fitted values in this study. Although concentration of TYL in composting treatment showed below detection limit during the test period, this study suggests that composting can reduce animal waste contaminants prior to field application as fertilizer.

  • In order to reduce damage from natural disasters, prevention activities through analysis and predicting based on meteorological factor and damage data is required. Other countries already have continuously studied on natural disasters and developed reducing disasters damage. But the risk assessment model for natural disaster is not to Korea. Therefore, a previous model of hurricane, Florida Public Hurricane Loss Model(FPHLM), is the basis and is applying to domestic situation. Accordingly, this study introduces the variables selecting process because input variables should be selected under Korea present state and be used. The estimating representative damage method would be necessary along with selecting housing types representing relevant areas because estimating damage amount of all over relevant areas housing was very hard during damage estimating process. But there is no exact representative housing types in the Korea. Therefore, we select housing types applicable to risk assessment model for natural disasters representing the Korea through previous studies and literature reviews. We using ASCE 7-98(Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures, 1998) standard which estimated wind load using 3-second gust. ASCE 7-98 divided Main Wind Force Resistance System(MWFRS) and Component and Cladding(C&C) and it estimated wind load. Therefore, we estimate wind load affected by 3-second gust of a typhoon Maemi through calculating wind load process using selected representative detached house types in the process of selecting input variables for previous disaster predict model. The result of houses damage amount is about 230 hundred million won. This values are limit the 1-story detached dwelling, 19~29pyeong(62.81~95.56 $m^2$) of total area and flat roof. Therefore, this process is possible application to other type houses.

Alternative reliability-based methodology for evaluation of structures excited by earthquakes

  • In this paper, an alternative reliability-based methodology is developed and implemented on the safety evaluation of structures subjected to seismic loading. To effectively elaborate the approach, structures are represented by finite elements and seismic loading is applied in time domain. The accuracy of the proposed reliability-based methodology is verified using Monte Carlo Simulation. It is confirmed that the presented approach provides adequate accuracy in calculating structural reliability. The efficiency and robustness in problems related to performance-based seismic design are verified. A structure designed by experts satisfying all post-Northridge seismic design requirements is studied. Rigidities related to beam-to-column connections are incorporated. The structure is excited by three suites of ground motions representing three performance levels: immediate occupancy, life safety, and collapse prevention. Using this methodology, it is demonstrated that only hundreds of deterministic finite element analyses are required for extracting reliability information. Several advantages are documented with respect to Monte Carlo Simulation. To showcase an applicability extension of the proposed reliability-based methodology, structural risk is calculated using simulated ground motions generated via the broadband platform developed by the Southern California Earthquake Center. It is validated the accuracy of the broadband platform in terms of structural reliability. Based on the results documented in this paper, a very solid, sound, and precise reliability-based methodology is proved to be acceptable for safety evaluation of structures excited by seismic loading.

Seismic response estimation of steel buildings with deep columns and PMRF

  • The responses of steel buildings with perimeter moment resisting frames (PMRF) with medium size columns (W14) are estimated and compared with those of buildings with deep columns (W27), which are selected according to two criteria: equivalent resistance and equivalent weight. It is shown that buildings with W27 columns have no problems of lateral torsional, local or shear buckling in panel zone. Whether the response is larger for W14 or W27 columns, depends on the level of deformation, the response parameter and the structural modeling under consideration. Modeling buildings as two-dimensional structures result in an overestimation of the response. For multiple response parameters, the W14 columns produce larger responses for elastic behavior. The axial load on columns may be significantly larger for the buildings with W14 columns. The interstory displacements are always larger for W14 columns, particularly for equivalent weight and plane models, implying that using deep columns helps to reduce interstory displacements. This is particularly important for tall buildings where the design is usually controlled by the drift limit state. The interstory shears in interior gravity frames (GF) are significantly reduced when deep columns are used. This helps to counteract the no conservative effect that results in design practice, when lateral seismic loads are not considered in GF of steel buildings with PMRF. Thus, the behavior of steel buildings with deep columns, in general, may be superior to that of buildings with medium columns, using less weight and representing, therefore, a lower cost.

Structural reliability assessment using an enhanced adaptive Kriging method

  • Reliability assessment of complex structures using simulation methods is time-consuming. Thus, surrogate models are usually employed to reduce computational cost. AK-MCS is a surrogate-based Active learning method combining Kriging and Monte-Carlo Simulation for structural reliability analysis. This paper proposes three modifications of the AK-MCS method to reduce the number of calls to the performance function. The first modification is related to the definition of an initial Design of Experiments (DoE). In the original AK-MCS method, an initial DoE is created by a random selection of samples among the Monte Carlo population. Therefore, samples in the failure region have fewer chances to be selected, because a small number of samples are usually located in the failure region compared to the safe region. The proposed method in this paper is based on a uniform selection of samples in the predefined domain, so more samples may be selected from the failure region. Another important parameter in the AK-MCS method is the size of the initial DoE. The algorithm may not predict the exact limit state surface with an insufficient number of initial samples. Thus, the second modification of the AK-MCS method is proposed to overcome this problem. The third modification is relevant to the type of regression trend in the AK-MCS method. The original AK-MCS method uses an ordinary Kriging model, so the regression part of Kriging model is an unknown constant value. In this paper, the effect of regression trend in the AK-MCS method is investigated for a benchmark problem, and it is shown that the appropriate choice of regression type could reduce the number of calls to the performance function. A stepwise approach is also presented to select a suitable trend of the Kriging model. The numerical results show the effectiveness of the proposed modifications.

  • The SNOSFET memory devices with ultrathin ONO(tunnel oxide-nitride-blocking oxide) gate dielectric were fabricated using n-well CMOS process and investigated its characteristics. The thicknesses of tunnel oxide, nitride and blocking oxide were $23{\AA},\; 53{\AA}\; and\; 33{\AA}$, respectively. Auger analysis shows that the ONO layer is made up of $SiO_2(upper layer of blocking oxide)/O-rich\; SiO_x\N\_y$. It clearly shows that the converting layer with $SiO_x\N\_y(lower layer of blocking oxide)/N-rich SiO_x\N\_y(nitride)/O-rich SiO_x\N\_y(tunnel oxide)$. It clearly shows that the converting layer with $SiO_x\N\_y$ phase exists near the interface between the blocking oxide and nitride. The programming condition of +8 V, 20 ms, -8 V, 50 ms is determined and data retention over 10 years is obtained. Under the condition of 8 V programming, it was confirmed that the modified Fowler-Nordheim tunneling id dominant charge transport mechanism. The programmed threshold voltage is distributed less than 0.1 V so that the reading error of memory stated can be minimized. An $8\times8$ NAND type flash EEPROM with SONOSFET memory cell was designed and simulated with the extracted SPICE parameters. The sufficient read cell current was obtained and the upper limit of $V_{TH}$ for write state was over 2V.

Seismic Performance Evaluations of RC Bearing Wall Systems with Coupling Beams - For Apartment Buildings in 1990s (연결보가 있는 철근콘크리트 내력벽시스템의 내진성능평가 -1990년대 공동주택을 중심으로-)

  • To investigate the performance of apartment buildings which were built in the 1990s and which have RC bearing wall systems with coupling beams, construction drawings of 13 buildings were collected and analyzed. To evaluate the seismic performance, FEMA 356 and FEMA 440 were selected as guidelines. For the demand curve, the seismic design spectrum in KBC 2009 is used. For each building, the performance points for life safety and the collapse prevention state are calculated. It was found that 9 out of 13 buildings (about 70%) showed damage more severe than the collapse prevention level at the performance point and more damage could be seen at the coupling beams than the walls. However, the story drift limit of FEMA 356 was satisfied for all buildings. Through the analysis of performance points, it was shown that the spectral acceleration has an inverse relationship with the natural period.

Reliability-Based Safety and Capacity Evaluation of High-Speed Railroad Bridges (신뢰성에 기초한 고속철도 교량의 안전도 및 내하력평가)

  • In Korea, the construction of the first high-speed railroad on the Seoul-Pusan Corridor has already started 3 years ago, in the paper, an attempt is made to develop reliability-based safety and capacity evaluation models for the computer-aided maintenance of the high-speed railroad bridges. The strength limit state models of PC railroad bridges for reliability analysis encompass both the single failure mode such as bending or shear strength and the combined interaction equations which simultaneously take into account flexures, shear and torsion. Then, the actual load carrying capacity and the realistic safety of bridges are evaluated using the system reliability-based equivalent strength, and the results are compared with those of the element reliability based or conventional methods. It is concluded that the proposed models may be appropriately applied in practice for the realistic assessment of safety and capacity of high-speed railroad bridges.

THE USE OF DEEP SEDATION FOR THE DENTAL MANAGEMENT OF PEDIATRIC PATIENTS WITH DEFINITELY NEGATIVE BEHAVIOR (행동조절이 어려운 소아환자의 Deep sedation을 이용한 치과치료)

  • It is one of difficulties to control children who show definitely negative behavior in dental clinic. In such a case, the pharmacologic management has been used to provide quality care, minimize the extremes of disruptive behavior, promote a positive psychologic response to treatment and patient welfare and safety. Deep sedation can be defined as a controlled, pharmacologically-induced state of depressed consciousness from which the patient is not easily aroused which may be accompanied by a partial loss of protective reflexes. In this retrospective report, the sedation records of 200 pediatric dental patients of ASA Class I & II who were not successfully treated under conscious sedation were used for analysis. Most frequently used regimen of deep sedation was the co-medication of midazolam(0.3mg/kg), enflurane(1.0-2.0 vol%) and 50-70% $N_2O_2$. The average age and weight of the patients was 4.6 yr (S.D: 2.72) and 18.7kg(S.D: 6.35) respectively. The average operative time was 52 minutes and midazolam (0.1-0.2cc) was additionally administered intranasally to prolong the operative time as needed. The episodes of untoward side effects were reported during and/or after the procedure in 58 patients. Serious adverse reactions such as cyanosis or laryngospasm were even reported in 7 patients but without mortality. Deep sedation is a very effective way of completing the dental treatments for those who failed to respond well to the conscious sedation. This technique has many practical advantages over general anesthesia case but the demands for the rigid monitoring criteria limit its use in general practice setting. The continuous efforts to improve the safety of the medication and the technique are required for the benefits of the patients and parent.
