  • Ultrasonic spectroscopy is likely to become a very powerful NDE method for detection of microfects and thickness measurement of thin film below the limit of ultrasonic distance resolution in the opaque materials, provides a useful information that cannot be obtained by a conventional ultrasonic measuring system. In this paper, we considered a thin film below the limit of ultrasonic distance resolution sandwitched between two substances as acoustical analysis model, demonstrated the usefulness of ultrasonic spectroscopic analysis technique using information of ultrasonic frequency for measurements of thin film thickness, regardless of interference phenomenon and phase reversion of ultrasonic waveform. By using frequency intervals(${\triangle}f$) of periodic minima from the ratio of reference power spectrum of reflective waveform obtained a sample to power spectrum of multiple reflective waves obtained interference phenomenon caused by ultrasonic waves reflected at the upper and lower surfaces of a thin layer, can measured even dimensions of interest are smaller than the ultrasonic wave length with simplicity and accuracy.

  • Although low spatial resolution satellite images like MODIS and GOCI can be important to observe land surface, it is often difficult to visually interpret the imagery because of the low contrast by prevailing cloud covers. We proposed a simple and adaptive stretching algorithm to enhance image contrast over land areas in cloudy images. The proposed method is basically a linear algorithm that stretches only non-cloud pixels. The adaptive linear stretch method uses two values: the low limit (L) from image statistics and upper limit (U) from low boundary value of cloud pixels. The cloud pixel value was automatically determined by pre-developed empirical function for each spectral band. We used MODIS and GOCI images having various types of cloud distributions and coverage. The adaptive contrast stretching method was evaluated by both visual interpretation and statistical distribution of displayed brightness values.

Numeral information was deduced and quantified effective information from the image. Also, pattern recognition of a defected input image was performed by neural network algorithm. Input pattern of various numeral was composed combinationally, and then, it was studied by neural network. Furthermore, possibility of pattern recognition was confirmed on artifical defected input data formed by simulation. Finally, application on unknown input pattern was also examined.

  • Stereo-lithography using the two photon absorption(TPA) makes micro structures with great resolution. The technique is applied to correcting photomask, 3-D photonic crystal, 3-D optical storage, 3-D lithography and so on. In contrast to a conventional stereo-lithography with single-photon absorption which has a size problem caused by the geometrical diffraction limit, the stereo-lithography with TPA has no size limit. • Metamaterials, artificially structured nanomaterials, have enabled unprecedented phenomena such as invisibility cloaking and negative refraction. Especially, hyperbolic metamaterials also known as indefinite metamaterials have unique dispersion relation where the principal components of its permittivity tensors are not all with the same signs and magnitudes. Such extraordinary dispersion relation results in hyperbolic dispersion relations which lead to a number of interesting phenomena, such as super-resolution effect which transfers evanescent waves to propagating waves at its interface with normal materials and, the propagation of electromagnetic waves with very large wavevectors comparing they are evanescent waves and thus decay quickly in natural materials. In this abstract, I will focus discussing our efforts in achieving the unique optical property overcoming diffraction limit to achieve several extraordinary metamaterials and metadevices demonstration. First, I will present super-resolution imaging device called "hyperlens", which is the first experimental demonstration of near- to far-field imaging at visible light with resolution beyond the diffraction limit in two lateral dimensions. Second, I will show another unique application of metamaterials for miniaturizing optical cavity, a key component to make lasers, into the nanoscale for the first time. It shows the cavity array which successfully captured light in 20nm dimension and show very high figure of merit experimentally. Last, I will discuss the future direction of the hyperbolic metamaterial and outlook for the practical applications. I believe our efforts in sub-wavelength metamaterials having such extraordinary optical properties will lead to further advanced nanophotonics and nanooptics research.

  • We propose the use of synchronously moving micro-optics (lenslet arrays) for image pickup and display in three-dimensional integral imaging to overcome the upper resolution limit imposed by the Nyquist sampling theorem. With the proposed technique, we present an all-optical three-dimensional integral imaging projector. An optically addressed spatial light modulator is used, which potentially provides better image resolution than the conventional CCD and liquid crystal display pair. We present experimental results using a liquid crystal light valve.

  • Previous investigations of redundant manipulators have often focussed on local optimization for redundancy resolution by using the Jacobian pseudoinverse to solve the instantaneous relationship between the joint and end-effector velocities. This paper establishes some new goals for redundancy resolution at position level by using configuration control approach which has been recently developed. Minimum gravity loading, joint limit avoidance, minimum sensitivity, maximum stiffness and minimum impulse are introduced as redundancy resolution goals. These new goals for redundancy resolution allow more efficient utilizations of the redundant joints based on the desired task requirements. Simple computer simulation examples are given for illustration.

  • Pulse echo techniques have been used for the conventional medical ultrasound imaging systems. However, their resolution is limited in the transmitted signal power. To overcome this limit, pulse compression method used in the radar systems was proposed. This system transmits a continuous coded signal and then compresses the received signal into the short and high resolution pulse by using correlator. The reflectors can be detected by cross-correlation between the transmitted signal and the received signal with the depth information. In this paper, we will present a comparative study of the performances of the most common sequences(pseudo-chirp, m-sequences, modified Golay code). The best result for improving resolution is obtained with the modified Golay Code.
