  • Objectives: This study aimed to investigate whether Ligigeopoong-san induces acute toxicity and genotoxicity Methods: Ligigeopoong-san contains the rhizome of Cnidium officinale MAKINO, an herb with potential teratogenicity. Teratogenicity is closely associated with genotoxicity. We analyzed whether Ligigeopoong-san induces acute toxicity and genotoxicity using various experimental models in accordance with Korean non-clinical test standards for pharmaceuticals and OECD test guidelines. Results : When Ligigeopoong-san was administered as a single dose to male and female rats, no toxic reactions, including organ damage, were observed at doses up to 2,500 mg/kg. In the bacterial reverse mutation test, no DNA mutations were detected at concentrations up to 5,000 ㎍/plate. In cell models, Ligigeopoong-san did not induce structural or numerical chromosomal aberrations at concentrations up to 2,000 ㎍/mL. Additionally, in animal studies, it did not cause bone marrow toxicity or form micronuclei in erythrocytes at doses up to 2,000 mg/kg. Conclusions : The experiments using various models demonstrated that Ligigeopoong-san did not induce acute toxicity or genotoxicity.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report a case of Ramsay-Hunt Syndrome showing continual improvement after 3 months of onset. Methods : This study was conducted with Ramsay-Hunt Syndrome patient who hospitalized in Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology & Dermatology Clinic of Korean medical hospital. The patient was treated with Korean medical treatment including Ligigeopoong-san Gagam, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture (Hwangryunhaedok-tang) and the other physics therapy. After treatment, we evaluated subjective symptoms, Yanagihara scale and H-B Grade. Results : As a result, the patient continued to improve even after 3 months after the onset, and showed complete recovery and significant improvement in subjective symptoms after treatment. Conclusions : It is considered that Korean medical treatment can be applied to the treatment of Ramsay-Hunt Syndrome.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyze case reports on and to study Korean medicine treatments of facial palsy. Methods: Studies published after 2000 were selected by searching for the terms "facial palsy" and "Guanwasa" in four databases and case reports using Korean medicine moderating variables were extracted by two individual researchers. Results: The House Brackmann (H-B) Scale (23 times, 65.7%), and Yanagihara Grading Scale (Y-system) (22 times, 62.8%) were used to assess facial palsy. All case reports used acupuncture, while 19 case reports (51.3%) used electro-acupuncture, and 8 case reports (21.6%) used pharmacopuncture. Main meridian points used were ST6, ST4, GB14, TE23, LI20, BL2. Thirty-two case reports used herbal medicine (86.4%) and both Ligigeopoong-san, Bojunglkgi-tang were used frequently. Conclusion: To treat facial palsy, acupuncture was mainly used in conjunction with electro-acupuncture and pharmacopuncture. Most case reports also used herbal medicine.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to analyze the trend of Korean medical treatments on acute stage of herpes zoster. Methods : Domestic databases(OASIS, KTKP, RISS, NDSL, KISS) were used to search case study papers related to the acute herpes zoster. Total 33 studies were selected and analyzed. Results : According to clinical type, Ramsay Hunt syndrome was the most frequent type, followed by herpes zoster genralisatus, facial herpes zoster. Manual acupuncture was the most frequently used treatment modalities, followed by Korean herbal medicine. LI4(合谷), LR3(太衝), ST36(足三里), GB20(風池) were the major acupoints used for the treatment of acute herpes zoster. Yongdamsagan-tang(龍膽瀉肝湯) was the most frequently used prescription followed by Ligigeopoong-san(理氣祛風散). As principal herb, Gentianae Scabrae Radix et Rhizoma(龍膽) and Bupleuri Radix(柴胡) were the most frequently used herbs followed by Alismatis Rhizoma(澤瀉). Conclusions : Though several limits remains, this is the first study to analyze the trends of Korean medicine treatment for the acute stage of herpes zoster, it may helpful for the clinical practitioner.
