In this paper we review current research on Atmospheric Brown Clouds (ABCs) with lightweight Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and miniaturized instruments. The UAV technology for in-situ measurements, including aerosol concentration, aerosol size distribution, aerosol absorption, cloud drop size distribution, solar radiation fluxes (visible and broadband), and spectral radiative fluxes, is a leading-edge technology for cost-effective atmospheric sounding, which can fill the gap between the ground measurement and satellite observation. The first experimental observation with UAVs in Korea, Cheju ABC Plume Monsoon Experiment (CAPMEX), conducted during summer 2008 revealed that the Beijing plumes exerted a strong positive influence on the net warming and fossil-fuel-dominated black-carbon plumes were approximately 100% more efficient warming agents than biomass-burning-dominated plumes. Long-term sustainable routine UAV measurements will eventually provide truly three-dimensional data of ABCs, which is necessary for the better understanding of their climate impacts and for the improvement of numerical models for air pollution, weather forecast and climate change.
Traffic violations such as moving while the traffic lights are red have come from a simple omission to a premeditated act. The traffic control center cannot timely monitor all the cameras installed on the roads to trace and pursue those traffic violators. Modern vehicles are equipped and controlled by several sensors in order to support monitoring and reporting those kind of behaviors which some time end up in severe causalities. However, such applications within the vehicle environment need to provide security guaranties. In this paper, we address the limitation of previous work and present a secure and privacy preserving protocol for traffic violation reporting system in vehicular cloud environment which enables the vehicles to report the traffic violators, thus the roadside clouds collect those information which can be used as evidence to pursue the traffic violators. Particularly, we provide the unlinkability security property within the proposed protocol which also offers lightweight computational overhead compared to previous protocol. We consider the concept of conditional privacy preserving authentication without pairing operations to provide security and privacy for the reporting vehicles.
The objective of this study was to develop lightweight, stretchable, tight-fit smart sportswear using the conductive yarns into the garment and demonstrating its usefulness. Sportswears with the ability to control LEDs with respect to lighting of the surrounding were developed by applying embroidery with conductive yarns to 2 types of men's T-shirts and 2 types of women's leggings pants for outdoor activities and exercise purposes. LEDs were applied to the front and back of men's T-shirts and to the rear of the waist of women's leggings. Men's T-shirts were printed where the LEDs were to be applied, and inside, they were embroidered with conductive threads on the hot-melt fabric to be attached, and then connected with LED. Women's pants were embroidered on the elastic band, in the form of a sine wave that gives it ability to stretch, and finally the elastic band was hidden inside the waistband. The operation of the light sensor in the dark provided the ability to protect joggers from night drivers or cyclists. LEDs were activated when the wearer turns on the fashionable device on his/her shoulder by pressing it. It was able to reduce the risk of accidents by giving recognizability to vehicles, bicycles, and athletes approaching or passing by at night, and securing safe distance from vehicles, etc. Internal embroidery technology had the same flexible and lightweight functions as ordinary clothing products, making it possible to apply to tight-fit smart T-shirts or leggings pants designs.
Auto industries have tried to employ lightweight alloys to improve the fuel efficiency of manufactured vehicles, as the environmental concern becomes an important issue. Even though the aluminum alloy is one of the most appropriate lightweight alloys for auto parts, the low formability of an aluminum alloy has been an obstacle to its application. In order to resolve the low formability problem, a recent study (Lee et al., 2017 [1]) showed that the infrared (IR) local heat treatment can improve the formability with a reduction of heating energy. However, the aforementioned study was limited to only a linear line heating. Since many of the available auto parts as applicable to vehicle manufacturing have a curved line shape, the heating experiments for a curved line should be studied. The possibility of building IR lamps having complex shapes is an advantage of the IR lamp, since it can control the heating shape. This work conducted the IR local heat treatment for the curved line. The experimental results show that the IR local heat treatment can improve the formability of the aluminum alloy for curved line. Additionally, it is shown that the IR local heat treatment also reduces the heating energy when it is compared with the furnace heating which heats a blank as a whole. A numerical simulation with a stress-based forming limit diagram also supports the experimental results.
In the present study, the characteristics of Mg inverter cases for hybrid cars are investigated. Concerns over the use of lightweight materials to reduce energy use and to mitigate emission problems are inevitable in the twenty-first century. Magnesium is a promising material for the manufacturing of lightweight parts. Several cases for thermal cooling channels have been designed and simulated, and the effects of materials and coatings on the thermal cooling efficiency have been discussed. The effects of the coating thickness on heat extraction in an Mg inverter housing case using the PEO (plasma electrolyte oxidation) coating method were also discussed. In order to produce an inverter case by the diecasting process, the filling sequence and cooling behavior during the diecasting process were simulated. The optimized process conditions from the simulation result were then used in a trial diecasting experiment.
CFRP of the advanced composite materials as structure materials for vehicles has a widely application in lightweight structural materials of air planes, ships and automobiles because of high strength and stiffness compared with conventional materials. This study is to investigate the energy absorption characteristics and collapse mode of CFRP single and double hat shaped structural member under the axial static collapse test. The CFRP single and double hat shaped structural members stacked at different angles (${\pm}15^{\circ}$, ${\pm}45^{\circ}$, ${\pm}90^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}/0^{\circ}$ and $0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}$ where the direction on $0^{\circ}$ coincides with the axis of the member). The axial static collapse tests were carried out for each member. Collapse mode and energy absorption characteristics of the each member were analyzed.
A 900 W scale direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) stack is designed and fabricated for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications. To meet the volume and weight requirements, metallic bipolar plates are applied to the DMFC stack for the first time wherein POS470FC was chosen as bipolar plate material. To ensure good robustness of the metallic bipolar plate based DMFC stack, finite element method based simulations are conducted using a commercial ANSYS Fluent software. The stress buildup and deformation characteristics on bipolar plates and end plates are analyzed in details. The present DMFC stack exhibits the performance of 1,130 W at 32 V and 35.3 A, clearly demonstrating that it could successfully operate for UAVs requiring around 1,000 W of power.
Currently, the most important purpose in designing automobile is environment-friendly and safety performance aspect. CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) of the advanced composite materials as structure materials for vehicles, has a wide application in lightweight structural materials of air planes, ships and automobiles because of high strength and stiffness. In this study, experimental investigations are carried out for CFRP single and double hat shaped section member in order to study the effect of various stacking condition. They were cured by heating to the appropriate curing temperature($130^{\circ}C$) by means of a heater at the vacuum bag of the autoclave. The stacking conditions were selected to investigate the effect of the interface numbers. The CFRP single and double hat shaped section members which manufactured from unidirectional prepreg sheets were made of 8ply. The static collapse tests performed and the collapse mode and energy absorption capability were analyzed according to interface number.
