We propose an efficient single convolutional neural network (CNN) for pedestrian detection on embedded GPUs. We first determine the optimal number of the convolutional layers and hyper-parameters for a lightweight CNN. Then, we employ a multi-scale approach to make the network robust to the sizes of the pedestrians in images. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is capable of real-time operation, while providing higher detection performance than conventional algorithms.
Recently, various lightweight methods for using Convolutional Neural Network(CNN) models in mobile devices have emerged. Weight quantization, which lowers bit precision of weights, is a lightweight method that enables a model to be used through integer calculation in a mobile environment where GPU acceleration is unable. Weight quantization has already been used in various models as a lightweight method to reduce computational complexity and model size with a small loss of accuracy. Considering the size of memory and computing speed as well as the storage size of the device and the limited network environment, this paper proposes a method of compressing integer weights after quantization using a video codec as a method. To verify the performance of the proposed method, experiments were conducted on VGG16, Resnet50, and Resnet18 models trained with ImageNet and Places365 datasets. As a result, loss of accuracy less than 2% and high compression efficiency were achieved in various models. In addition, as a result of comparison with similar compression methods, it was verified that the compression efficiency was more than doubled.
Edge computing architecture has effectively alleviated the computing pressure on cloud platforms, reduced network bandwidth consumption, and improved the quality of service for user experience; however, it has also introduced new security issues. Existing anomaly detection methods in big data scenarios with cloud-edge computing collaboration face several challenges, such as sample imbalance, difficulty in dealing with complex network traffic attacks, and difficulty in effectively training large-scale data or overly complex deep-learning network models. A lightweight deep-learning model was proposed to address these challenges. First, normalization on the user side was used to preprocess the traffic data. On the edge side, a trained Wasserstein generative adversarial network (WGAN) was used to supplement the data samples, which effectively alleviates the imbalance issue of a few types of samples while occupying a small amount of edge-computing resources. Finally, a trained lightweight deep learning network model is deployed on the edge side, and the preprocessed and expanded local data are used to fine-tune the trained model. This ensures that the data of each edge node are more consistent with the local characteristics, effectively improving the system's detection ability. In the designed lightweight deep learning network model, two sets of convolutional pooling layers of convolutional neural networks (CNN) were used to extract spatial features. The bidirectional long short-term memory network (BiLSTM) was used to collect time sequence features, and the weight of traffic features was adjusted through the attention mechanism, improving the model's ability to identify abnormal traffic features. The proposed model was experimentally demonstrated using the NSL-KDD, UNSW-NB15, and CIC-ISD2018 datasets. The accuracies of the proposed model on the three datasets were as high as 0.974, 0.925, and 0.953, respectively, showing superior accuracy to other comparative models. The proposed lightweight deep learning network model has good application prospects for anomaly traffic detection in cloud-edge collaborative computing architectures.
In the last few years, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have demonstrated good performance while solving various computer vision problems. However, since CNNs exhibit high computational complexity, signal processing is performed on the server side. To reduce the computational complexity of CNNs for edge computing, a lightweight algorithm, such as a MobileNet, is proposed. Although MobileNet is lighter than other CNN models, it commonly achieves lower classification accuracy. Hence, to find a balance between complexity and accuracy, additional hyperparameters for adjusting the size of the model have recently been proposed. However, significantly increasing the number of parameters makes models dense and unsuitable for devices with limited computational resources. In this study, we propose a novel MobileNet architecture, in which the number of parameters is adaptively increased according to the importance of feature maps. We show that our proposed network achieves better classification accuracy with fewer parameters than the conventional MobileNet.
Optical Camera Communication (OCC), known as the next-generation wireless communication technology, is currently under extensive research. The performance of OCC technology is affected by the communication environment, and various strategies are being studied to improve it. Among them, the most prominent method is applying convolutional neural networks (CNN) to the receiver of OCC using deep learning technology. However, in most studies, CNN is simply used to detect the transmitter. In this paper, we experiment with applying the convolutional neural network not only for transmitter detection but also for the Rx demodulation system. We hypothesize that, since the data images of the OCC system are relatively simple to classify compared to other image datasets, high accuracy results will appear in most CNN models. To prove this hypothesis, we designed and implemented an OCC system to collect data and applied it to 12 different CNN models for experimentation. The experimental results showed that not only high-performance CNN models with many parameters but also lightweight CNN models achieved an accuracy of over 99%. Through this, we confirmed the feasibility of applying the OCC system in real-time on mobile devices such as smartphones.

In the IoT(internet of things) where various devices can be connected, failure of essential devices may lead to a lot of economic and life losses. For reducing the losses, fault diagnosis techniques have been considered an essential part of IoT. In this paper, the method based on a graph neural network is proposed for determining fault and classifying types by extracting features from vibration data of systems. For training of the deep learning model, fault dataset are used as input data obtained from the CWRU(case western reserve university). To validate the classification performance of the proposed model, a conventional CNN(convolutional neural networks)-based fault classification model is compared with the proposed model. From the simulation results, it was confirmed that the classification performance of the proposed model outweighed the conventional model by up to 5% in the unevenly distributed data. The classification runtime can be improved by lightweight the proposed model in future works.
Object detection plays a crucial role in a self-driving system. With the advances of image recognition based on deep convolutional neural networks, researches on object detection have been actively explored. In this paper, we proposed a lightweight model of the mask R-CNN, which has been most widely used for object detection, to efficiently predict location and shape of various objects on the road environment. Furthermore, feature maps are adaptively re-calibrated to improve the detection performance by applying an attention module to the neural network layer that plays different roles within the mask R-CNN. Various experimental results for real driving scenes demonstrate that the proposed method is able to maintain the high detection performance with significantly reduced network parameters.

Cryptanalysis can be performed by various techniques such as known plaintext attack, differential attack, side-channel analysis, and the like. Recently, many studies have been conducted on cryptanalysis using deep learning. A known-plaintext attack is a technique that uses a known plaintext and ciphertext pair to find a key. In this paper, we use deep learning technology to perform a known-plaintext attack against S-PRESENT, a reduced version of the lightweight block cipher PRESENT. This paper is significant in that it is the first known-plaintext attack based on deep learning performed on a reduced lightweight block cipher. For cryptanalysis, MLP (Multi-Layer Perceptron) and 1D and 2D CNN(Convolutional Neural Network) models are used and optimized, and the performance of the three models is compared. It showed the highest performance in 2D convolutional neural networks, but it was possible to attack only up to some key spaces. From this, it can be seen that the known-plaintext attack through the MLP model and the convolutional neural network is limited in attackable key bits.

Single image super-resolution (SISR) is an image processing technique, and its main target is to reconstruct the high-quality or high-resolution (HR) image from the low-quality or low-resolution (LR) image. Currently, deep learning-based convolutional neural network (CNN) image super-resolution approaches achieved remarkable improvement over the previous approaches. Furthermore, earlier approaches used hand designed filter to upscale the LR image into HR image. The design architecture of such approaches is easy, but it introduces the extra unwanted pixels in the reconstructed image. To resolve these issues, we propose novel deep learning-based approach known as Lightweight deep CNN-based approach for Single Image Super-Resolution (LDCSIR). In this paper, we propose a new architecture which is inspired by ResNet with Inception blocks, which significantly drop the computational cost of the model and increase the processing time for reconstructing the HR image. Compared with the other state of the art methods, LDCSIR achieves better performance in terms of quantitively (PSNR/SSIM) and qualitatively.

In face recognition, sometimes the number of available training samples for single category is insufficient. Therefore, the performances of models trained by convolutional neural network are not ideal. The small sample face recognition algorithm based on novel Siamese network is proposed in this paper, which doesn't need rich samples for training. The algorithm designs and realizes a new Siamese network model, SiameseFacel, which uses pairs of face images as inputs and maps them to target space so that the $L_2$ norm distance in target space can represent the semantic distance in input space. The mapping is represented by the neural network in supervised learning. Moreover, a more lightweight Siamese network model, SiameseFace2, is designed to reduce the network parameters without losing accuracy. We also present a new method to generate training data and expand the number of training samples for single category in AR and labeled faces in the wild (LFW) datasets, which improves the recognition accuracy of the models. Four loss functions are adopted to carry out experiments on AR and LFW datasets. The results show that the contrastive loss function combined with new Siamese network model in this paper can effectively improve the accuracy of face recognition.
