A Study of Static Behavior of FRP Bridge Deck Concerning Connection Condition (FRP바닥판의 연결조건에 따른 정적거동 분석)

  • Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) is a relatively new material in the bridge construction. With high strength to weight ratios, excellent durability, and low life-cycle costs of FRP, FRP bridge decks can offer a low dead load, reduced maintenance, and long service life. Due to the lightweight of FRP, if existing concrete decks can be replaced with the FRP decks, the load carrying capacity of superstructure can be increased without strengthening of girders. In this study, we have conducted an experiment on 7 cases of connection conditions with steel girder by using bolts considering a rational and economical method of connection and compared with the results of FEM analysis. From the experimental result, if the bolts are strong enough to resist shear force between the FRP bridge deck and the steel girder, it will be structurally secure to use the zigzag method.

Heavy-impact sound insulation performance according to the changes of dry flooring structure in wall structure

  • The floor heating method generally uses a wet construction method including the installation of resilient material, lightweight foam concrete, heating piping, and finishing mortar. Such a wet construction method not only delays other internal finishing processes during curing period for two mortar pouring process, but also has a disadvantage that it is difficult to replace the floor heating layer when it deteriorated because it is integrated with the frame. Dry floor heating construction method can be a good alternative in that it can solve these defects. Conversely, when it applied to the wall structure that is vulnerable to the interlayer noise compared with the column-beam structure, the question about the heavy-impact sound(HIS) insulation performance is raised. Therefore, conventional dry floor heating method is hard to apply to the wall structure apartments. Therefore, for the purpose to improve the applicability of dry floor heating method in wall structure apartments, this study investigated the change of floor impact sound, especially HIS insulation performance which is one of the required performance for the floor structure. This study tried to examine whether the change of heavy-impact sound pressure level(SPL) shows a tendency at the significant level according to the shape and mass of the floor structure. Through filed experiments on wall structure apartment, this study confirmed that the form of the raised floor shows better HIS insulation performance than the fully-supported form. In addition, it was also confirmed that the HIS insulation performance increases with the mass on the upper part. Moreover, this study found the fact that a mass of about 30 kg/m2 or more should be placed on the upper structure to reduce the heavy-impact SPL according to the bang machine measuring method. Although this study has a limit due to insufficient experiment samples, if the accuracy of this study is increased, it will contribute to the diffusion of dry floor heating by setting the HIS insulation performance target and designing the dry floor heating structure that meets the target.

Evaluation of Bond Strength in FRP Hybrid Bar Affected by Freezing/thawing Test and UV Rays (동결융해 및 UV 폭로시험을 거친 FRP Hybrid Bar의 인발거동특성 평가)

  • FRP Hybrid Bar, composed of an embedded steel and the coated composites with epoxy and glass fiber, is an effective construction material with tension-hardening performance and lightweight. The epoxy exposed to UV(Ultra Violet Rays) and FT(Freezing and Thawing) action easily shows a surface deterioration, which can cause degradation of bonding strength between inside-steel and outside-concrete. In the present work, surface inspection for 3 different samples of normal steel, FRP Hybrid Bar before UV, and FRP Hybrid Bar after UV test was performed, then concrete samples with 3 reinforcement types were prepared for accelerated FT test. Through visual inspection on 3 typed reinforcement, no significant deterioration like chalking was evaluated. The results from FT test to 120 and 180 cycles showed FRP Hybrid Bar exposed to UV test has higher bonding strength than normal steel by 106.3% due to enlarged bond area by silica coating. The 3 cases showed a similar bond strength tendency with increasing FT cycles, however a relatively big deviations of bond strength were evaluated in FRP Hybrid Bar after UV test due to loss of silica coating.

Structural Design Optimization of Gageocho Jacket Structure Considering Unity Check (가거초 자켓 구조물의 허용응력비를 고려한 구조 최적설계)

  • Offshore jacket structures generally comprise steel members, and the safety standard for jacket structures typically focuses on the steel components. However, large amounts of concrete grouting is filled in the legs of the Gageocho jacket structure to aid in the recovery from typhoon damage. This paper proposes a safe and lightweight design for the Gageocho ocean research station comprising steel members instead of large amounts of concrete reinforcement in the legs. Based on the actual design, the structural members are grouped according to their functional roles, and the inner diameter of the cross-section in each design group is defined as a design variable. Structural optimization is carried out using a genetic algorithm to minimize the total weight of the structure. To satisfy the conservative safety standards in the offshore field, both the maximum stress and the unity check criteria are considered as design constraints during optimization. For enhanced safety confidence, extreme environmental conditions are assumed. The maximum marine attachment thickness and the section erosion in the splash zone are applied. Additionally, the design load is defined as the force induced by extreme waves, winds, and currents aligned in the same direction. All the loading directions surrounding the structure are considered to design the structure in a balanced and safe manner. As a result, compared with the current structure, the proposed structure features a 45% lighter design, satisfying the strict offshore safety criteria.

Study of Failure Mode and Static Behavior of Lightweight FRP Truss Bridge Deck System (복합재료 트러스 교량시스템의 정적거동 및 파괴모드에 관한 해석적 연구)

  • There is a concern with worldwide deterioration of highway bridges, particularly reinforced concrete. The advantages of fibre reinforced plastic(FRP) composites over conventional materials motivate their use in highway bridges for replacement of structures. Recently, an FRP deck has been installed on a state highway, located in New York State, as an experimental project. In this paper, a systematic approach for analysis of this FRP deck bridge is presented. Multi-step linear numerical analyses have been performed using the finite element method to study the structural behavior and the possible failure mechanism of the FRP deck-superstructure system. Deck's self-weight and ply orientations at the interface between steel girders and FRP deck are considered in this study. From this research, the results of the numerical analyses were corroborated with field test results. Analytical results reveal several potential failure mechanism for the FRP deck and truss bridge system. The results presented in this study may be used to propose engineering design guideline for new and replacement FRP bridge deck structure.

An Experimental Study on the Behavior of Curved Panel Parts Using Composite Materials (복합소재를 활용한 곡면 패널의 부재단위 성능 평가)

  • FRP is a new material that is lightweight, has high strength and high durability, and is emerging as a third construction material in many countries. The composite material panel targeted in this study was a curved member and is the most frequently used arch-shaped member of a structures, such as tunnels. Composite curved panels can be produced in high quality and large quantities through automation operations. On the other hand, the frequency of application is low, and the design criteria and experimental data are lacking. Therefore, this study examined the mechanical performance of the member unit first to verify its performance as structural members of the FRP curved panel. For this purpose, tensile, compression, and connection performance tests were carried out. The tensile tests showed greater tensile strength of specimens with larger curvature, and the compression tests showed that the composite section of a composite material has greater compressive strength than the concrete section. Finally, the test of the performance of the connection showed that the attachment performance of the connection was more than equal to that of the FRP composite material panel.

A Study on Fabrication and Characterization of Inorganic Insulation Material by Hydrothermal Synthesis Method (2) (수열합성법을 이용한 무기계 단열소재 제조방법 및 특성에 관한 연구 (2))

  • The inorganic insulating material was fabricated with quartzite, ordinary portland cement(OPC), lime, anhydrous gypsum and foaming agent by hydrothermal reaction. The inorganic insulating material was fabricated by using autoclave chamber under high-temperature and high-pressure. The inorganic insulating material is a porous lightweight concrete. Because of its porous structure, properties of inorganic insulating material were light-weight and high-heat insulation property. Properties of fabricated inorganic insulating material were $0.26g/cm^3$ in specific gravity, 0.4MPa in compressive strength and 0.064W/mK in thermal conductivity. In this study, the inorganic insulating material was fabricated and analyzed at different size of quartzite/OPC, various foaming reagent and functional additives to improve the properties. Consequently, polydimethylsiloxane can improve density and thermal conductivity. Especially, polydimethylsiloxane showed excellent improvement in compressive strength.

Dynamic Behavior of the Prestressed Composite Girder by Modal Tests and Moving Train Analysis (프리스트레스트 강합성 거더의 모달테스트 및 이동 열차하중 해석에 의한 동적거동)

  • Various PSC and steel-concrete composite railway bridges are being developed for short-medium spans with structural and economic efficiency. According to the design concept, the prestressed composite girder bridge has the advantages of being lightweight and having low girder depth, with the capacity for long spans. However, the dynamic behavior under a passing train is one of the critical issues concerning these railway bridges designed with more flexibility. Therefore, it is very important to evaluate the modal parameters before performing dynamic analyses. In this paper, real-scale prestressed composite girders were fabricated as a test model and modal testing was carried out to evaluate modal parameters including natural frequency and modal damping ratio. During the modal testing, a digitally controlled vibration exciter as well as an impact hammer was applied to obtain frequency-response functions, and the modal parameters were also evaluated after the fracture of test models. With application of reliable properties from modal tests, the estimation of dynamic performances of prestressed composite girder railway bridges can be obtained from various parametric studies on dynamic behavior under the passage of a moving train.

A Study on the Removal of Heavy Metals from Groundwater Using Permeable Reactive Barriers Based on Nano FeS (나노 FeS를 이용한 투과성반응벽체의 중금속 오염 지하수 처리에 관한 연구)

  • The acid mine drainage (AMD) and landfill leachates released into the subsurface environment can result in serious environmental problems like soil and groundwater contamination. The AMD and the leachates of landfill were known to contain many heavy metals. In this study, the author assessed the reactivity and ability of the FeS coated-ALC for the removal of contaminants (As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Ni, Zn, Al) in AMD and leachates in landfill. The synthetic nano-FeS and Autoclaved Lightweight Concrete (ALC) were used as reactive materials in the permeable reactive barriers(PRBs). The result of batch test indicated that synthetic nano-FeS can remove 99% of heavy metals for the 1hr of reaction time except for As and Ni(about 90%). However, the 80% of As and Ni was removed in column 1(FeS coated-ALC). The column 2(Ore FeS) removed more than 99% of heavy metals. The pH of the column 1 was increased from 3.51 to 6.39~6.50, and the pH with column 2 was increased from 3.51 to 9.20. As the result of this study, the author can surmise that the synthetic nano-FeS coated ALC will use as a very good reactive material of the PRBs to treat the contaminated groundwater with AMD and leachate of landfill.
