  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanical properties and carbonation resistance of concretes using lightweight aggregate coated surface finishing materials. To evaluate the mechanical properties and carbonation resistance of concrete, slump, air amount, air-dried unit volume weight, compressive strength, and carbonation depth are tested. In terms of the unit volume weight of concrete, air-dried unit volume weight of concrete using coating lightweight aggregate was measured as $1,739{\sim}1,806kg/m^3$. When using coating aggregate, compressive strength of concrete at 28 days was measured as much as 82.7~95.9% of the compressive strength using non-coating aggregate. It is found that compressive strength tends to decrease with coating lightweight aggregate. However, all concretes using coating lightweight aggregate except O-LWAC satisfied the criteria for 28-day compressive strength suggested in KS. The measurement of carbonation depth when the water-repellent agent was used found that carbonation depth was reduced by as much as 2.6~6.1%. On the other hand, when using polymer waterproof agent, carbonation depth was reduced by as much as 8.6~12.0%. Consequently, to improve carbonation resistance, polymer waterproof agent was more effective than water-repellent agent. In particular, epoxy showed the most outstanding performance.

  • Exposure to the outside, the concrete is differential moisture distribution depending on the depth. Such a differential moisture distribution causes the differential drying shrinkage in concrete structures. This thesis is researched to compare the shrinkage of lightweight concrete depending on depth to normal concrete. It is used artificial lightweight aggregate which has 20% of pre-absorb value by lightweight concrete. When water-binder ratio is 30%, average shrinkage of lightweight concrete section decreased than normal concrete, but differential shrinkage of lightweight concrete section increased. However water-binder ratio is 40% and 50% average shrinkage and differential shrinkage of lightweight concrete section decreased than normal concrete.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanical property and carbonation resistance of concretes using surface treated lightweight aggregate. In order to evaluate mechanical property and carbonation resistance, slump, compressive strength, and carbonation depth are tested. Slump of concretes using surface treated lightweight aggregate measured 120~125mm, which are lower than slump of NWAC. Compared to compressive strength of NWAC, compressive strength of concretes using surface treated lightweight aggregate showed a level of 82.8~95.9%. In carbonation resistance test, carbonation depth of concretes using surface treated lightweight aggregate measured 10.2~11.3mm, which are lower than carbonation depth of NWAC. As a result, it is found that compressive strength is decreased slightly but carbonation resistance is improved, in case of using surface treated lightweight aggregate.

  • Twenty-four beam specimens were tested to examine the effect of the maximum aggregate size on the shear behavior of lightweight concrete continuous beams. The maximum aggregate size varied from 4 mm to 19 mm and shear span-to-depth ratio was 2.5 and 0.6 in each all-lightweight, sand-lightweight and normal weight concrete groups. The ratio of the normalized shear capacity of lightweight concrete beams to that of the company normal weight concrete beams was also compared with the modification factor specified in ACI 318-05 for lightweight concrete. The microphotograph showed that some unsplitted aggregates were observed in the failure planes of lightweight concrete beams, which contributed to the enhancement of the shear capacity of lightweight concrete beams. As a result, the normalized shear capacity of lightweight concrete continuous beams increased with the increase of the maximum aggregate size, though the increasing rate was lower than that of normal weight concrete continuous beams. The modification factor specified in ACI 318-05 was generally unconservative in the continuous lightweight concrete beams, showing an increase of the unconservatism with the increase of the maximum aggregate size. In addition, the conservatism of the shear provisions of ACI 318-05 was lower in lightweight concrete beams than in normal weight concrete beams.

  • Structural lightweight concrete will reduced total loads of supporting sections and foundations in archtectural and civil structures. So, the lightweight concrete can be used widely for various purpose in the archtectural and civil structures. This paper were examined the influence of the mixing factor on the fresh and hardened properties of lightweight concrete that are used 2types of the differences properties of lightweight aggregates. According to types of lightweight aggregates, the case of synthetic lightweight aggregate are have need higher s/a; 2~4% on mixing proportion. Lightweight concrete was somewhat exhibit lower compressive strength than ordinary concrete. However it was not showed a marked difference. According to types of lightweight aggregates, the case of synthetic the lightweight aggregate are highest performance in fresh and hardened concrete.

  • The purpose of this study is to manufacture sintered lightweight aggregate for non-structural concrete using sewage sludge, organic waste matter is produced to a sewage treatment plant. It is tested for basic property and strength of artificial aggregate according to addition ratio of sewage sludge, and the results are compared with imported aggregate from Spain. As the results of experiment, the manufactured lightweight aggregate could be used for non-structural concrete. Also, it was favorably comparable to those of the imported aggregate. When it is manufactured with aggregate, it is safe environmentally because of protecting elution of harmful heavy metals.

  • This paper presents an experimental study for determining the bond performance of lightweight concretes produced using pumice aggregate coated with colemanite-cement paste. For this purpose, eight hinged beam specimens were produced with four different concrete mixtures. 14 mm deformed bars with $10{\Phi}$ development lengths were selected constant for all test specimens. All the specimens were tested in bending and load-slip values were measured experimentally to determine the effect of colemanite-cement coated pumice aggregate on bond performances of lightweight concretes. Test results showed that, colemanite-cement coated pumice aggregate increases compressive strength and bond performance of the lightweight concretes, considerably.
