  • This study was performed to evaluate the stress-strain properties of surlightweight polymer concrete using synthetic lightweight aggregates. The following conclusions were drawn; 1. The dynamic modulus of elasticity was in the range of $1.514{\times}10^5{\sim}1.916{\times}10^5kgf/cm^2$, which was approximately 48~96% of that of the normal cement concrete. It was showed larger with the decrease of synthetic lightweight fine aggregate. 2. The static modulus of elasticity was in the range of $2.552{\times}10^4{\sim}4.386{\times}10^4kgf/cm^2$, which was showed lower compared to that of the normal cement concrete. The poisson's number of surlightweight polymer concrete was less than that of the normal cement concrete. 3. The stress-strain curves of surlightweight polymer concrete were showed smaller with the increase of expanded clay.

  • Although the quantity of dredged soils has increased owing to recent new harbor construction, sea course management, polluted sediment dredging, and four-river project, the reuse or recycling of those dredged soils has not done properly in Korea. To develop measures to utilize them in various ways for reuse or recycling, the biophysicochemical properties of dredged soils and sediment were assessed in this study. Samples were classified according to their sources-river and sea-by location, and as dredged soil and sediment depending on storage time. The results showed that dredged materials from the sea have high clay content and can be used for making bricks, tiles, and lightweight backfill materials, while dredged materials from the river have high sand content and can be used in sand aggregates. Separation procedures, depending on the intended application, should be carried out because all dredged materials are poorly sorted. All dredged soils and sediments have high salinity, and hence, salts should be removed before use for cultivation. Since dredged materials from the sea have adequate concentrations of nutrients, except phosphate, they can be used for creating and restoring coastal habitats without carrying out any additional removal processes. The high overall microbial activities in dredged materials from the river suggested that active degradation of organic matter, circulation of nutrients, and provision of nutrients may occur if these dredged materials are used for cultivation purpose.

  • Recently, the importance for internet of things (IoT) security has increased enormously and hardware-based compact chips are needed in IoT communication industries. In this paper, we propose low-complexity crypto-processor that unifies advanced encryption standard (AES), academy, research, institute, agency (ARIA), and CLEFIA protocols into one combined design. In the proposed crypto-processor, encryption and decryption processes are shared, and 128-bit round key generation process is combined. Moreover, the shared design has been minimized to be adapted in generic IoT devices and systems including lightweight IoT devices. The proposed crypto-processor was implemented in Verilog hardware description language (HDL) and synthesized to gate level circuit in 65nm CMOS process, which results in 11,080 gate counts. This demonstrates roughly 42% better than the aggregates of three algorithm implementations in the aspect of gate counts.

  • Majority of the plastic produced each year is being disposed in land after single-use, which becomes waste and takes up a lot of storage space. Therefore, there is an urgent need to find alternative solutions instead of disposal. Recycling and reusing the PET plastic waste as aggregate replacement and fiber in concrete production can be one of the eco- friendly methods as there is a great demand for concrete around the world, especially in developing countries by raising human awareness of the environment, the economy, and Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Self-compacting concrete (SCC) is a key development in concrete technology that offers a number of attractive features over traditional concrete applications. Recently, in order to improve its durability and prevent such plastics from directly contacting the environment, various kinds of plastics have been added. This review article summarizes the latest evident on the performance of SCC containing recycled PET as eco-friendly aggregates and fiber. Moreover, it highlights the influence of substitution content, shape, length, and size on the fresh and properties of SCC incorporating PET plastic. Based on the findings of the articles that were reviewed for this study, it is observed that SCC made of PET plastic (PETSCC) can be employed in construction era owing to its acceptable mechanical and fresh properties. On the other hand, it is concluded that owing to the lightweight nature of plastic aggregate, Reusing PET waste in the construction application is an effective approach to reduces the earthquake risk of a building.

  • In thermal power generation companies, the recycling of refined ash (LOI < 6%) obtained from a PC-firing furnace is beneficial for the companies, e.g., it can be used for making lightweight aggregates. However, ash having a high LOI, which cannot be reused, is still buried in the ground. To obtain refined ash, the re-burning of high-LOI ash (LOI > 6%) in a PC-firing furnace can be an alternative. In this study, a numerical analysis was performed to demonstrate the effects of ash re-burning. An experimental constant value was decided by TGA (thermo-gravimetric analysis), and a DTF (drop-tube furnace) was used in the experiment for calculating the combustion of ash. On the basis of the trajectory of the moving particles of coal and ash, it was concluded that supplying ash near the burner, which is located high above the ground, is appropriate. On the basis of numerical results, it was concluded that an ash supply rate of 6 ton/h is suitable for combustion, without affecting the PC-firing boiler.
