This paper dealt with the design and implementation of an expert system to monitor and diagnose the lightning arresters in GIS substations. The expert system consists of a data acquisition module(DAM) based on microprocessor and diagnostic algorithms. The DAM measures and analyzes several parameters necessary for the arrester diagnosis such as system voltages, leakage current components, and temperatures. Also, it includes an intelligent surge counter which can record the date and tin, the polarity, and the amplitude of surge currents. All the data acquired is transmitted to a remote computer by a low rate wireless network specified in IEEE 802.15.4 to avoid electromagnetic intereference under high voltage and large current environments. The decision-making for the arrester diagnosis completes with a Java Expert System Shell(JESS) which is composed of a knowledge base, an inference engine and a graphic user interface(GUI).

The transient ground impedance depending on configuration, size, and material of grounding electrodes as well as the shapes of impulse currents, has a significant affect on the performance of the grounding system. This paper presents experimental results in regard to the analysis method of transient ground impedance using the lightning impulse and variable frequency currents. Also a new estimation method to replace the effective surge impedance for transient ground impedance was proposed. The ground electrodes used in this experiment are virtual ground electrodes including both resistance and inductance components, carbon ground electrode with 1[m] length, copper electrode with 9[m] length and counterpoise with 40[m] length. Ground impedances using the proposed method were measured respectively. Comparing with the ground impedance using variable frequency current the conventional ground impedance($Z_1$) calculated from the peak values of impulse voltage and impulse current is observed more correct method for evaluating the performance of ground electrode than the effective surge impedance.

This paper describes the experimental results obtained from various installation conditions of cascaded metal oxide varistor(MOV)-based SPDs with the objectives to analyze the coordination of the cascaded surge protective devices(SPDs) and to propose the proper selection and installation methods of the cascaded SPDs. The residual voltage, discharge current and energy sharing between the upstream and downstream SPDs in the $10/350{\mu}s$ direct lightning current wave were measured and discussed. The coordination of cascaded MOV-based SPDs is closely related to the varistor voltage and installation methods of SPDs. In cascaded SPDs without dedicated decoupling elements, the natural impedance of leads connecting two SPDs can act as a decoupler for the coordination of MOV-based SPDs. Even if the varistor voltage of the upstream SPD is higher than that of the downstream SPD at long distances between two SPDs, the energy coordination of cascaded SPDs could effectively be fulfilled in the conditions of large surge currents and the optimum voltage protection level can be achieved. Consequently, if the distance between voltage limiting type SPDs is long, the coordination of the cascaded SPDs should be determined by taking into account the decoupling effects due to the intrinsic inductance of leads connecting the upstream and downstream SPDs.

This paper dealt with the development of surge protection devices (SPDs) that can protect high speed computer network devices from overvoltages caused by switching operations or lightning surges. The designed SPD is a form of hybrid circuit which is composed of a gas tube having large current diverting capability, high response bi-directional avalanche diodes, and fast recovery diodes to reduce insertion loss on high frequency domain. Surge protection and signal transmission characteristics of the fabricated SPD was tested according to the international standards, IEC 61000-4-5 and IEC 61643-21. From the test results, the SPD is satisfied with the international standards and the high cut-off frequency was 204 MHz. Also, the SPD showed a good performance without an insertion loss on a field test of 100 Mbps class Local Area Network.

Electronic circuits with semiconductor and IC are very weak against the surge voltage and currents. The surge protective devices for electronic circuit and AC power lines are becoming more widely used. It is possible to give rise to the malfunction of the earth leakage circuit breaker(ELB) due to the operation of surge protective devices, and the interruption of AC power lines on account of the malfunction of the ELB brings about several disadvantages such as low operation efficiency and reliability of electronic and informational systems, economical loss, and etc. The aim of the present work is to investigate the dead operation characteristics of the ELB against the surge voltages. The impulse generator of 10[kV) in an 1.2/ 50[~) voltage waveform was fabricated. The dead operation characteristics of the ELB applied by surge voltages were measured under the conditions of KS C 4613 and the test circuit with a varistor. As a consequence, the peak value of the zero-phase sequence circuit of the ELB is increased as the surge voltage and stray capacitance increase. All of the ELBs used in this work were satisfied with the lightning impulse dead operation test condition defined in KS C 4613. However one specimen only did not bring about dead operation in the condition of the test circuit with a varistor. There is high possibility that a large portion of the ELB installed at the AC power lines with the surge protective devices bring about the dead operation.

Among the failures of photovoltaic power generation facilities, failures caused by surges account for 20% of the total failure rate, and energy emissions of tens to hundreds [A] during power generation and electrical damage to inverters and connection boards lead to electrical safety accidents. In particular, in the case of lightning, an abnormal voltage is induced in an electric circuit to destroy insulation, and the current flowing at this time causes a fire and acts as a factor that accelerates the deterioration of parts. Due to this action, the problem of electrical safety of solar power generation devices spreading from outside the city center to the inside of the city center such as houses, apartments, and government offices is emerging. Since lightning strikes cause both field-based and conducted electrical interference, this effect increases with increasing cable length or conductor loops. In addition, surge damages not only solar modules, inverters and monitoring devices, but also building facilities, which can eventually cause operational shutdown due to fire of the photovoltaic power generation system and consequent financial loss. Therefore, in this paper, a lightning protection system for solar power generation devices is studied for the purpose of reducing property damage and human casualties due to the increase in fire and electrical safety accidents caused by lightning strikes in photovoltaic power generation systems.
This paper deals with analysis of complex grounding system using electromagnetic simulation method. Electrical devices could be damaged by transient voltage such as a lightning surge. Therefore the measures to protect the equipments from transient, such as a lightning are required. The ground system is important in this respect. The representative parameter of grounding system performance is earth ground resistance. Precise prediction of earth resistance is required, because it is difficult to modify and change after the completion of the grounding system construction. Numerical modeling is often used in numerical analysis to identify the electrical characteristics of the grounding system. However complex systems are difficult to predict grounding characteristics by numerical analysis. If the total electric field of the earth in general is similar to the antenna model, in that the incident electric field and expressed as a sum of the scattering field. In this study, the electromagnetic field simulation tool "ANSYS HFSS" module containing the antenna model was used to analyze performance of ground system. Both the simple and complex grounding system were analyzed by simulation tool and experimental method. As a result simulation method is effective to predict performance of a complex ground system.

This paper presents the soil ionization phenomena and the parameters with the transient characteristics of model grounding system under lightning impulse voltages. lonization properties of dry and wet sands were investigated by using two test cells of concentric cylindrical electrode system with different dimensions. As a result non-linear electrical behavior of sand under high impulse voltage is caused by ionization process. The transient impedance of sand depends not only on the water content but also on the magnitude of applied impulse voltages. The grounding impedance is decreased with increasing the water content and the magnitude of a lied voltages. The results resented in this paper will provide useful information on the design of high performance grounding systems against lightning surge.

This paper describes the overvoltage analysis and reduction methods of insulation joint boxes in underground transmission power cables when direct lightning surge strikes to overhead transmission line. An actual 154kV combined transmission line with underground Power cables was modelled in ATPDraw for simulation. Simulations were performed to analyze the overvoltage between insulation joint boxes, sheath-to-ground voltage according to the distance between cable conductors, cable lengths, burying types, CCPU connection types. The most effective method to reduce the induced overvoltage of Insulation joint boxes was proposed. It is evaluated that the proposed reduction method riven from the detailed simulations can be effectively applied to the actual underground power cable systems.

The monitoring and diagnosing technique for lightning arresters is important to assure the reliability of power supply in GIS-substation. In this paper, we described the implementation of an expert system for GIS arrester facilities. The proposed system consists of a data acquisition module (DAM), a wireless communication module, and a personal computer. The DAM detects system voltages, total leakage currents and its harmonic components, and includes an algorithm to calculate the resistive leakage current by the principle that the magnitudes of resistive leakage current are equal at the same level of the system voltage applied to the arrestor. Also, we designed a surge event detection circuit which can acquire the date, the polarity, and the amplitude of surge events. All the acquired data are transmitted after correction by many algorithms to the remote station through the ZigBee protocol. The expert system is based on the Jave Expert System Shell (JESS) and make more reliable decision by using an exclusive inference process.
