Effective Impulse Impedances of Deeply Driven Grounding Electrodes

  • This paper presents the characteristics of transient and effective impulse impedances for deeply driven grounding electrodes used in soil with high resistivity or in downtown areas. The laboratory test associated with the time domain performance of grounding piles subjected to a lightning stroke current has been carried out using an actual-sized model grounding system. The ground impedances of the deeply driven ground rods and grounding pile under impulse currents showed inductive characteristics, and the effective impulse ground impedance owing to the inductive component is higher than the power frequency ground impedance. Both power frequency ground impedance and effective impulse ground impedance decrease upon increasing the length of the model grounding electrodes. Furthermore, the effective impulse ground impedances of the deeply driven grounding electrodes are significantly amplified in impulse currents with a rapid rise time. The reduction of the power frequency ground impedance is decisive to improve the impulse impedance characteristics of grounding systems.

Evaluation on the Lightning Breakdown Voltages of Palm Oil and Coconut Oil under Non-Uniform Field at Small Gap Distances

  • In recent years, there are a number of studies that have been carried out to explore the alternative for Mineral Oil (MO) as dielectric insulating fluid in transformers due to the increasing tight regulation on safety and environment. Vegetable oils have been identified as suitable candidate since it is biodegradable, non-toxic and high flash/fire points which ensure more in-service safety. Among the types of vegetable oils considered for transformers application are Palm Oil (PO) and Coconut Oil (CO). This paper presents an experimental study on the lightning breakdown voltages of PO and CO under non-uniform electric field based on needle-sphere electrodes configuration at 3 small gap distances. The type of PO used in this study is Refined Bleached and Deodorized Palm Oil (RBDPO) Olein. The main focus of this study is to examine the lightning breakdown performance of RBDPO and CO under different test conditions and assess its suitability as dielectric insulating fluid in transformers. The effect of voltage polarities (positive and negative) and testing methods (rising-voltage, up-and-down and multiple-voltage) were investigated. The data obtained from all tests were analysed by Weibull distribution in order to determine the withstand voltages for each type of oils. It was found that the breakdown voltages of RBDPO and CO are comparable with MO under positive lightning impulse. Under negative lightning impulse, the breakdown voltage of MO is slightly higher than RBDPO and CO. There is no significant effect of testing methods and voltage polarities on lightning breakdown voltages of RBDPO and CO. Based on the statistical analysis, it is found that the breakdown voltages of RBDPO and CO at 1% probability are slightly lower than MO.

  • This Impulse Voltage and Current Test System is designed for performing of impulse voltage tests with Lightning impulse voltage 1.2/50(LI) up to 1520kV peak value and switching impulse voltages 250/2500(SI) up to 1120kV peak valu acc. to IEC 60060-1, and furthermore for impulse current test, e.g. testing of arrester sections($U_{res}$=95kV)with current impulses 4/10 and 8/20 up to 70kA peak value.

  • This paper presents the experimental results on impulse breakdown characteristics under a highly non-uniform electric field in $SF_{6}/N_{2}$ gas mixtures according to a change in temperature. Test temperature ranges from $-25^{\circ}C$ to $25^{\circ}C$. The impulse predischarge breakdown developments are investigated by the measurements of current pulse and discharge luminous events. As a result, the predischarge development mechanisms for both positive and negative polarities are same. When increasing the temperature, breakdown voltage due to lightning impulse voltage is increased in negative polarity. On the other hand, when increasing the temperature, breakdown voltage due to lightning impulse voltage is not changed in positive polarity.

  • A study on the dielectric characteristics of the Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) is important for designing a reliable high voltage superconducting machines such as transmission superconducting fault current limiters, superconducting cables, and superconducting transformers. In this paper, dielectric experiments of the GFRP under lightning impulse voltage are conducted in liquid nitrogen($LN_2$) according to various experimental conditions such as the thicknesses of the GFRP, the diameters of electrode systems and the pressures. The dielectric characteristics of the GFRP are analyzed by using a Finite Elements Method(FEM) according to various field utilization factors. It has been reported that the electrical insulation design of the GFRP would be conducted by considering the mean electric field intensity($E_{mean}$) distributed inside the GFRP. In this study, it is found that the dielectric performance of the GFRP could be explained by not only $E_{mean}$ but also the maximum electric field intensity ($E_{max}$). Finally, the empirical formulae of the GFRP to estimate an electrical breakdown voltage at sparkover under the lightning impulse condition are deduced. It is expected that the presented experimental results in this paper are helpful to design electrically reliable high voltage superconducting machines using the GFRP as an insulation material.

  • 본 논문은 뇌임펄스전압에 대한 누전 차단기의 오동작 특성에 관한 것으로 한국공업규격 KS C 4613의 규정과 서지보호장치를 갖는 모의회로의 조건에서 누전차단기의 부동작 특성을 실험적으로 조사하고 검토하였다. 실험 결과, 본 연구에 사용한 30[A]용 고감도형 누전 차단기인 모든 시료는 증폭회로의 전원부에 설치된 서지보호장치에 의해 입사되는 차동모드의 뇌임펄스전압에 차단되는 성능을 가지고 있었다. 4종의 시료는 KS C 4613에 정의된 뇌임펄스 부동작시험조건을 만족시키지 못하였으며, 그때의 오동작을 유발한 전압은 약 5∼6.5[kV]로 비교적 높았다. 서지보호장치가 설치된 경우를 모의한 시험조건에서는 3종의 누전차단기가 오동작하였으며, 누전차단기가 오동작을 일으키는 전압도 약 3∼5[kV] 정도로 비교적 낮았다.

  • In this work, in order to investigate the effect of multiple lightning impulse currents on zinc oxide arrester blocks. We have been designed and fabricated a multi-impulse generator which can produce quintuple voltages with $1.2/50{\mu}s$ to 100kV and quintuple currents with $8/20{\mu}s$ to 12kA and we have evaluated the characteristics of zinc oxide arrester block using several electrical and physical methods after the multi-impulse test. It was found that the multi-impulse failures of ZnO arrester blocks were mainly caused by surface flashover and the multi-impulse currents test would be more suitable than single impulse current test in evaluation of the characteristics of zinc oxide arrester blocks corresponding to actual situations.

  • Lightning impulse voltage is essential to evaluate the insulation performance of electric power apparatus. Recently international standard (IEC-60) on high voltage measurement techniques are being revised. In the draft of this standard, a new calibration method is introduced and the accuracy of most industrial measuring systems is maintained by means of comparison test against the reference measuring systems. Comparison tests of dividers for chopped lightning impulse measurement were rallied out by KERI. The 700kV shielded resisitive divider with and without compensation element were done comparison test with 300kV PTB divider which have the similar charateristics as that were circulated among the laboratories. This paper reports on the calculation results of response charateristics obtained by EMTP and the comparison test results with chopped lightning impulse voltages from 150kV to 250kV. It is demonstrated that KERI are capable of realizing the idea in the revision of the IEC standand, that is, to establish traceability.

  • This paper presents experimental results about characteristics of soil discharge as a function of moisture content when the $1.2/50{\mu}s$ lightning impulse voltage is applied. The laboratory experiments, for this study, were carried out based on factors affecting the transient behavior in soils. The electrical breakdown in soils was measured over a 0-6% range of moisture content for sands and a 0-4% range of moisture content for gravels. Needle-plane electrode systems was used As a result, the conduction current prior to ionization growth in dry soil is a little, but it in wet soil is increased with the applied voltage because the wet soil particles act as conductors. The soil impedance curves show an abrupt reduction just after breakdown. The general tendency measured in different soils is that the higher the water content, the lower the breakdown voltage and the shorter the time-lag to breakdown.

  • Cyclic aging for 14days is performed to remove the large amount of the volatiles found in freshly manufactured cable. In this paper, we examined lightning impulse characteristics of power cable before and after cyclic aging for 14days. As the result, the breakdown voltage after aging was lower than that before aging, but the breakdown voltage after aging was higher than that before aging in TR CNCV-W $60mm^2$ power cable.
