  • The main functions of AC railroad vehicles arresters is to protect the main transformer from lightening impulse or switching impulse surge, then the MOV(metal oxide varistor) elements rated of 10kA is applied. The residual voltage and surge energy absorption are important parameters in designing arrester, these must be carefully decided with considering protecting level of impulse environment of system. The purpose of this study is to discuss the residual voltages and the energy absorption capability by impulse currents on MOV elements for railroad vehicles, and to introduce design factors which act as optimal protecting condition against impulse currents.

  • For design of On/Off type solenoid actuator, designer must have the experimental knowledge as well as general electromagnetic formulas to design object. It is possible for theoretical knowledge to do the out-line design, but it is impossible to optimal design without experimental knowledge which only can achieve through many repeated experiments. In addition, in present On/Off type solenoid actuator field, smaller, lightening, lower consumption power, high response time are effected as the most important design factor. So, experimental knowledge is more needed for optimal design of solenoid actuator. In this study, we developed a design program composed electromagnetic theories and experimental parameter values for inexperienced designers. And we proved the propriety of this program by experiments.

  • A contactless eddy current type braking system is developed to take advantages of the recent brake system which uses hydraulic force can show high efficiency in a certain velocity region, but not in a high velocity region, and has initial response delay time and pressure build-up time which make stopping distance longer. These are the limits of mechanical brake system of a contact type, which makes a concept brake system required. So, in this paper, the contactless brake system .of a inductive current type is chosen instead of hydraulic brake system. This brake system can be used almost forever for being no wear and contributed to lightening weight of a vehicle. Besides, the contactless brake system can be used as that of electric or solar car with anti-lock brake system. The analysis of induced electromotive force and braking torque obtained with theoretical approximate model, the design of a braking system and a nonlinear controller, and the results of simulation of the ABS, experiment are included.

  • In 2000, Standard Design Loads for Building was changed especially in seismic load. According to the change, seismic-resisting capacity of deteriorated apartment houses has to be reestimated. This research is to propose seismic-strengthening and improving methods of structural efficiency of RC deteriorated apartment houses. The analysis models were shear-wall system(36/58/79$m^{2}$) and beam-column system(11/19/25py) which were constructed in early 1980 and didn't consider seismic load. The definite methods are addition of shear walls and lightening of load. The story-drifts of shear wall systems exceed allowable story-drifts so that two methods was applied. The story-drifts of beam-columns system satisfy allowable story-drifts, thus the latter is applied. The seismic-resisting capacity of these systems was improved by the two methods. This research will be helpful to remodel deteriorated apartment houses.

  • This paper presents the optimal design method of an induction motor for electric vehicle which minimizes the weight of motor and satisfies maximum power rating at the same time. Effects of motor parameters on the dimensions and weight of motor is investigated. Optimal routine which is used in this paper is simulated annealing technique.

  • Nowadays, car manufacturers applied many high strength steels such AHSS or UHSS to car bodies for weight lightening. Therefore, a variety of applied steel sheet to car bodies increased and the needs of simulation to evaluate weldability also increased in order to reduce the cost and time. In this study, resistance spot welding simulations for DP 780 Steel with 1.0 and 1.4 mm thickness were conducted with respect to lobe curve. 2 regression models to estimate tensile shear strength were suggested and they were second order polynomial regression model and optimized second order regression model. The performance of these models was evaluated in terms of the coefficient of determinant and average error rate.

  • A surge protection device of the metal oxide varistor(MOV) has been commonly used for preventing electrical damage in many electronic equipments. The MOV has a property that leakage current is increased and might be permanently damaged when it is exposed continuously to the electrical stresses such as lightening surges. In this paper, we propose a novel surge protection circuit adopting a silicon controlled rectifier(SCR) in the traditional protection circuits using the MOV device simultaneously. When lightning surges are injected to the proposed circuit, the MOV lets the surge pulses bypassing through the ground at first up to the level that SCR begins to operate. Above the threshold level of turning on the SCR, the SCR operates bypasses large surge currents to the ground. Proposed circuit was verified with a leakage current experiment and PSpice circuit simulations under the repeated surge injection environment.

  • According to some statistics, about 13,000 passenger aircrafts are daily flying over the globe and these aircrafts are struck by a lightning flash at least once a year. But so far we have never heard lightning injured any passengers and crew members got shocked by lightning. The aircraft, lightning and the sky are inseparably related to each other. Accordingly, the aircraft and lightning are also inseparably related to each other. They say lightning is easily attracted to metals and these aircrafts are incidentally made of metal. Aircraft become statically and electrically charged when flying because of the friction with air. A lot of research and investigation to protect aircraft from the influence of lightening have been made since the early days. The following descriptions outline researches and investigations on how aircraft and ships get aways from lightning flashes during the flight or the sail. • A real-time face detection is to find human faces robustly under the cluttered background free from the effect of occlusion by other objects or various lightening conditions. We propose a face detection system for real-time applications using wavelet decomposition method based on Gabor features. Firstly, skin candidate regions are extracted from the given image by skin color filtering and projection method. Then Gabor-feature based template matching is performed to choose face cadidate from the skin candidate regions. The chosen face candidate region is transformed into 2-level wavelet decomposition images, from which feature vectors are extracted for classification. Based on the extracted feature vectors, the face candidate region is finally classified into either face or nonface class by the Levenberg-Marguardt back-propagation neural network.

  • Biogenic source emissions refer to naturally occuring emissions from vegetation, microbial activities in soil, lightening, and so on. Vegetation is especially known to emit a considerable amout of volatile organic compounds into the atmosphere. Therefore, biogenic source emissions are an important input to photochemical air quality models. since most biogenic source emissions are calculated at the county-level, they should be geographically allocated to the computational grid cells of a photochemical air quality model prior to running the model. The traditional method for the spatial allocation for biogenic source emissions has been to use a "spatial surrogate indicator" such as a county area. In order to examine the applicability of such approximations, this study developed more detailed surrogate indicators to improve the spatial allocation method for biogenic source emissions. Due to the spatially variable nature of biogenic source emissions, Geographic Information Systems(GIS) were introduced as new tools to develop more detailed spatial surrogate indicators. Use of these newly developed spatial surrogate indicators for biogenic source emission allocation provides a better resolution than the standard spatial surrogate indicator.indicator.
