  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate to the practicing engineers, how to apply the advanced composite materials theory to the road structures. For general construction material used, there is certain theoretical limit in sizes. For super road structure construction, the reduction in panel weight is the first step to take in order to break such size limits. METHODS : For a typical road structures panel, both concrete and advanced composite sandwich panels are considered. The concrete panel is treated as a special orthotropic plate. RESULTS : All types of advanced composite sandwich panels are considered as a self-weights less than one tenth of that of concrete panel. The concrete panel is treated as a special orthotropic plate to obtain more accurate result. CONCLUSIONS : Advanced composite sandwich panels are considered as a self-weights less than one tenth (10%) of that of concrete panel, with deflections less than that of the concrete panel. This conclusion gives good guide line for design of the light weight of road structures.

  • As construction industry is requiring competitive power and technique in national construction market with rapid fluctuation of construction environment and development, requirements upgrading performance in construction materials are increasing. But, national lightweight aggregate and lightweight concrete's inappropriateness when produced are also increasing. And there are not international standard of aggregates in using these construction materials because standards and characteristics of aggregate in each countries are different. Therefore, in this study, lightweight aggregate acquired due to wide range of use is tested and mixed for concrete to gain practicality and set the authorized manual in international. Also, basic data will be proposed to set a standard for concrete by analyzing lightweight aggregate characteristics. When lightweight aggregate absorptivity is high, concrete shows low strength and when it's density is low, concrete shows low weight of unit volume. Furthermore, compressive strength of lightweight aggregate is steep in first and longtime material age is tendency to cause low strength increasing rate.

  • White organic light emitting devices were fabricated to improve the stability through a structural change using the two peak emission method. The fabricated devices were composed of indium tin oxide (100 nm)/ $\alpha$-NPD (30 nm)/4,40-bis(2,20-diphenylvinyl)-1,10-biphenyl (DPVBi, d: variable)/DPVBi: Rubrene (40 nm)/2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline(5 nm)/ $Alq_3$(5 nm)/ Al (100 nm). A DPVBi for blue emissions was used as the host material in the emitters. The doping concentration of the Rubrene was fixed at 2.0% (by weight). The white emission with Commission Internationale De L'Eclairage coordinates of (0.3342, 0.3439) occurred at 14 V with a thickness d of 1 nm. It was insensitive to the drive voltage, and the devices had a maximum luminance of $211\;cd/cm^2$. At 19 V, the current density and maximum external quantum efficiency were $173\;mAcm^2$ and 0.478%, respectively.

  • OLED has many advantages of low voltage operation, self radiation, light weight, thin thickness, wide view angle and fast response time to overcome existing liquid crystal display (LCD)'s weakness. Therefore, It draws attention as promising display and has already developed for manufactured goods. Also, OLED is regarded as a only substitute of flexible display with a thin display. A considerable portion of the light originating film emissive centers buried in a solid film never escapes due to internal reflection at the air-film interface and is scattered as edge emission or dissipated within the solid film This is one of the major reasons why the luminous power efficiency of OLED remains low, in spite of research progress in OLED. Although several ways of overcoming this difficulty have been reported, no comprehensive method has been proposed yet. In this paper, we propose that use of anti-reflective coating layers.

  • The purpose of this experiment was to examine possibility of microleakage by water, temperature change, and bite force inside the mouth during the period of using light-activated temporary filling materials. 2 kinds of light-activated temporary filling materials were used in order to measure weight and compressive strength and to evaluate microleakage between filling material and cavity wall according to frequency of thermal circulation. First, Light-activated temporary filling material was increased the weight, which was measured according to the period of using. As for the result of comparing between products, the weight of Quicks was indicated to be higher. Second, Compressive strength of Spacer had significant difference depending on period of using. However, significant difference wasn't shown in the compressive strength of Quicks. In Spacer that showed significant difference, the compressive strength increased greatly in the difference of 3 days. Third. As for micro-leakage according to frequency of thermal circulation, the microleakage was indicated to be the highest in the group that carried out 7,000 times. The group with operation of 1,000 times and the group with operation of 3,000 times were indicated the statistically lower micro-leakage than the group with operation of 7,000 times. This study brought about a rise in micro-leakage depending on the passage in the period of using. However, it is obvious fact that micro-leakage increases according to the passage of time after restoration.

  • In paper the evenness of planar distribution of mass in a small scale is called formation (orbetter:mass formation). Traditionally formation has been assessed visually, by looking the sheet of paper against transmitted light. Different kinds of optieal testers are being usd to obtain quantitative rankings htat would be independent of the observer but would well correspond to the visual assessment. However, various raw-material and process factors do influence light trans-mittance in paper and do impair the correspondence between basis weight and the optical formation measurement (or visual assessment). As the optical formation test methods do not incorporate an efficient calib ration routine, the formation of the sophisticated paper grades of today the is rather difficult to measure optically and may lead to erroneous results. It may be concluded that the optical measurement is not suitable for paper grades with high filler content. coating, heavy calendering or that are made of heavily beaten pulp, nordoes it apply for dyed or printed papers. For this reason, visual assessment and optical evaluation shoild be replaced with a measurement that gives reliable results independent on paper grode and manufacturing process. Formation measuremend based on beta radiation is suitable for all paper grades regardless to the material contents or process treatment. It is possible to measure even dyed or printed samples. Thonks to a sim ple and relioble calibration, the results are converted to real basis weight balues that remain reliable even with time. The only beta tester commercially available is the AMBERTEC Beta Formation Tester. Formation of paper does vary locally in the web. Typically there exists a formation profile, too similarly to other properties of paper. Therefore, formation should ? ays be expressed as a mean of a sufficient amount of parallel determinations. All formation measurements should be calibrated against basis weight.

  • Composite honeycomb sandwich plate is light and strong. It is easy to produce. It began to be applied to the bodyshell of rolling stock. Generally, weight saving amounts to 27%. However, the material cost of it is much higher than that of aluminum extrusion profile, which prevents popular use of it for bodyshell. In this paper, manufacturing processes of two light materials were compared to investigate cost impact. After cost breakdown was defined, economics of two materials was analyzed using the previous cost data. Easy production of composite bodyshell could compensate for higher material cost. Mass production of composite bodyshell can make the equipment cost lower for the composite bodyshell so that it may have strong competitiveness to the aluminum bodyshell. Operational energy saving due to weight reduction was also presented referring to the actual statistical data in a metro line.

  • The number of newly constructed traditional Korean houses, i.e., Hanoks, and light-frame buildings is increasing. However, related research is limited owing to the lack of awareness regarding safety evaluations. Therefore, this study conducted an outdoor exposure test to accurately evaluate wooden constructions. Spruce, pine, and fir (SPF) material was monitored for a year, wherein the SPF material was artificially dried under 18% moisture content, and its physical properties and color differences were measured once a month. Large differences were observed in the material's weight and moisture content, which are indexes sensitive to daily range and rainfall; however, no significant difference was found for other basic properties in the pre and post test results. Herein, $L^*$, $a^*$, and $b^*$ values represent color differences; these values exhibited a general decrease after the test. Such differences were attributed to the loss of lignin in the wood. The color difference value was high between the months of May and July, when the daily range and rainfall significantly fluctuated. Multiple regression analysis was performed on the $a^*$ value (redness indicator), daily range, rainfall, and ultraviolet index. The results indicated that the daily range influenced redness the most. According to the estimated regression equation, the daily range and redness are positively correlated. Based on the results, the types and influence of independent variables on color difference are expected to change as the wood's duration of outdoor exposure and the amount of data obtained both increase.

  • Generally, material for radiator of automobile is composed of Al-alloy, but part of radiator material is still composed of Cu. Specially, Al-alloy replaces Cu and Cu-alloy as cooling and heating system material for light weight. Therefore, galvanic electronic cell is formed between Al-alloy and Cu for automobile radiator material, and Al-alloy corrosion is accelerated. So, in this study, galvanic corrosion test of Al-alloy coupling with Cu was carried out in distilled water, tap water, polluted environment and non-freezing solution. And thus corrosion potential and galvanic currrent density of Al-alloy coupling with Cu is investigated.

  • Recently polymeric insulators and arresters are being used for outdoor high voltage applications. Polymeric insulators for transmission line have significant advantages over porcelain and glass insulators, especially for ultra-high voltage(UHV) transmission lines. Their advantages are light weight, vandalism resistance and hydrophobicity. Polymeric insulator kind are a relatively new technology, but their expected life is still unknown. In this paper, the material property for polymeric insulating material such as silicone rubber and EPBM is investigated by cross-link time and the relation between tracking resistance and W resistance is analyzed by IEC 60587 and W aging experiment.
