Color in an image is determined by illuminant and surface reflectance. So, to recover unique color of object, estimation of exact illuminant is needed. In this study, the illumination models suggested to get the object color constancy with the physical illumination model based on physical phenomena. Their characteristics and application limits are presented and the necessity of an extended illumination model is suggested to get more appropriate object colors recovered. The extended illumination model should contain an additional term for the ambient light in order to account for spatial variance of illumination in object images. Its necessity is verified through an experiment under simple lighting environment in this study. Finally, a reconstruction method for recovering input images under standard white light illumination is experimented and an useful method for computing object color reflectivity is suggested and experimented which can be induced from combination of the existing illumination models.

Photoelectrochemical solar cells such as dye-sensitized cells (DSSCs), which exhibit high performance and are cost-effective, provide an alternative to conventional p-n junction photovoltaic devices. However, the efficiency of such cells plateaus at 11~12%, in contrast to their theoretical value of 33%. The majority of research has focused on improving energy conversion efficiency of DSSC by controlling nanostructure and exploiting new materials in photoelectrode consisting of semiconducting oxide nanoparticles and a transparent conducting oxide electrode (TCO) [1-5]. In this presentation, we introduce inverse opal-based scattering layers containing highly crystalline anatase nanoparticles and their feasibility for use as bi-functional light scattering layer is discussed in terms of optical reflectance and charge generation properties as a function of optical wavelength. A new ITO nanowire-based photoelecrode is also introduced and its unique charge collection property is presented, demonstrating potential use for highly efficient charge collection in DSSC.
N-doped $TiO_2$ microcuboids were successfully prepared by a simple one-pot hydrothermal method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was found that the N-doped $TiO_2$ microcuboids enhanced absorption in the visible light region, and exhibited higher activity for photocatalytic degradation of model dyes. Based on the experimental results, a visible light induced photocatalytic mechanism was proposed for N-doped anatase $TiO_2$ microcuboids.
We have developed variety of LCD technologies for the out-door display, which improve out-door readability as well as reliability from external impacts. This improvement was made possible by new approach on LCD cell optical design and modification of LCD surface, which allows surrounding light to be transmitted to enhance the visibility and at the same time filtering out light, which are considered to be source of noise in terms of visibility. This technology enables users to maintain high display performance in both in-door & out-door environments moreover alternatively choosing in-door/out-door.

The process parameters of DC pulsed sputtering to produce a multi-layer thin film with light reflectance at a specific wavelength region were studied. The optical simulation of multi-layer thin films of the silicon dioxide ($SiO_2$) films with a low refractive index and the titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) films with a high refractive index was done. Under a DC pulsed sputtering power of 2kW and 200 sccm(standard cubic centimeter per minute) argon gas, the silicon dioxide films with a refractive index of 1.46 in the range of oxygen gas ratios of 12% and a titanium dioxide film with a refractive index of 2.27 in the range of oxygen gas ratios of 1% were produced. The multi-layer structure of high refractive index/low refractive index/high refractive index was designed and fabricated. The characteristics of the fabricated multi-layer thin film structure showed a reflectance of more than 45% in the range, 780 to 1200nm. This multi-layer structure is expected to be used to block the near infrared wavelength light.
Vegetation indices on the basis of optical characteristics of vegetation can represent various conditions such as canopy biomass and physiological activity. Those have been mostly developed with the large-scaled applications of multi-band optical sensors on-board satellites. However, the sensitivity of vegetation indices for detecting vegetation features will be different depending on the spatial scales. Therefore, in this study, the investigation of photochemical reflectance index (PRI), known as one of useful vegetation indices for detecting photosynthetic ability and vegetation stress, under the three spatial scales was conducted using multi-spectral camera installed in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV),field spectrometer, and leaf reflectometer. In the leaf scale, diurnal PRI had minimum values at different local-time according to the compass direction of leaf face. It meant that each leaf in some moment had the different degree of light use efficiency (LUE). In early growth stage of crop, $PRI_{leaf}$ was higher than $PRI_{stands}$ and $PRI_{canopy}$ because the leaf scale is completely not governed by the vegetation cover fraction. In the stands and canopy scales, PRI showed a large spatial variability unlike normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). However, the bias for the relationship between $PRI_{stands}$ and $PRI_{canopy}$ is lower than that in $NDVI_{stands}$ and $NDVI_{canopy}$. Our results will help to understand and utilize PRIs observed at different spatial scales.

The objectives of this study were to develop models to predict quality parameters of Korean bee-honeys by visible and NIR spectroscopic technique. Two kinds of bee-honey fronl acacia and polyflower sources were tested in this study. The honeys were harvested in the spring of 2000 and stored in the storage facility at 20$^{\circ}C$ during experiments. Total of 394 samples of honey were analyzed. Reflectance spectra, moisture contents, ash, invert sugar, sucrose, F/G (fructose/glucose) ratio, HMF (hydroxymethyl furfural), and C12/C13 ratio of honeys were measured. The average values for the tested honeys were 19.9% of moisture contents, 0.12% of ash, 68.4% of invert sugar, 5.7% of sucrose, 1.27 of F/G(fructose/glucose) ratio, 14.4 mg/kg of HMF, and -19.1 of C12/C13 ratio. A spectrophotometer, equipped with a single-beam scanning monochromator (NIR Systems, Model 6500, USA) and a horizontal setup module, was used to collect reflectance data from honey. The reflectance spectra were measured in wavelength ranges of 400∼2,498 nm. with 2 nm of interval. Thirty-two repetitive scans were averaged, transformed to log(1/Reflectance), and then were stored in a microcomputer file, forming one spectrum per measurement. A sample cell and reflectance plate were made to hold honey samples constantly. Spectra of honey samples were divided into a calibration set and a validation set. The calibration set was used during model development, and the validation set was used to predict quality parameters from unknown spectra. The PLS(Partial Least Square) models were developed to predict the quality parameters of honeys. The first and the second derivatives of raw spectra were also used to develop the models with proper smoothing gap. The MSC (multiplicative scatter correction) and the SNV & Dtr.(standard normal variate and detranding) preprocessing were applied to all spectra to minimize sample-to-sample light scatter differences. The PLS models showed good relationships between predicted and measured quality parameters of honeys in the wavelength range of 1100∼2200 nm. However, the PLS analysis was not good enough to predict HMF of honeys.
In the past, making IR photography needed somewhat complicated process, so its application fields were limited. However, it has become easy to make IR photography with advanced digital technology, so it is expected that the fields of IR photography and existing limit due to difficult making process will be expanded. Therefore, in this study, it is decided that the need of IR standard chart which allows us to manage exposure and tone of IR photography for scientific purpose will increase. Two methods were used to make IR standard chart. First method is to use aluminum. When aluminum has oxide coating through anodic oxidation, it has high durability, corrosion resistance and heat resistance. Also, IR reflectance of aluminum can be controlled in some degree depending on the thickness of oxide coating. Second method is to use pigments. Yellow 10P150 pigment is used for the brightest patch. This pigment is appropriate in this study due to high heat resistance and IR reflectance. Carbon black is used for the darkest patch. Carbon black absorbs much IR, and its color is not faded by any source of light. IR reflectance is adjusted elaborately by mixing two pigments. Finally, 6 patches are selected with consideration for actual IR reflectance of patches. As a result, IR reflectance of random subjects can be known approximately and IR photographs can have appropriate contrast with the IR standard chart.
Recently, various studies on flexible electronic devices have been performed. In this study, the potential of Ag nanowires was evaluated as a material to replace the ITO transparent conductive film. Ag nanomaterials were formed on the glass by a novel brush coating method and an argon plasma evaporation method based on atmospheric pressure plasma. First, the Ag solution is coated on the glass with a brush, and the remaining solvent is removed with atmospheric plasma. During this process of solvent evaporation, a sound is generated by the reaction between the atmospheric plasma and the solvent. Therefore, the remaining amount of the solvent can be confirmed. In order to observe optical properties and electrical results such as reflectance, transmittance, and absorbance according to the number of coatings of the film, the results were analyzed by coating up to 5 times. For the purpose of investigating the interaction of light with Ag nanowires, reflectance and transmittance were measured while changing the wavelength of light from 200 nm to 800 nm. In the case of absorbance, the trend of increasing light absorption of the Ag nanowires according to the coating was clearly confirmed. The electrical properties showed a great change from the time of coating more than 4 times, and in particular, the resistance value was lower than kΩ/cm2 when the coating was applied 5 times. Based on these optical and electrical results, we plan to verify the possibility of a transparent conductive film by applying it to electronic devices in the future.
This study was executed to substitute Carbon-arc method, which is a method currently used for testing light-fastness of military textile products, with Xenon arc method. Specimens used in the study were classified according to the fabric material and color of military textile products and were composed of 11 items of 42 kinds with different colors. Light-fatness test was done by comparing the result of Carbon-arc(KS K 0700) and Xenon arc(KS K ISO 105-B02) method. In Xenon arc method, blue wool reference materials of 1~8 was used, and exposure condition preferred in American continent and light exposure method 3 were applied. After testing with both methods, grade of light-fastness, color difference, reflectance and color were examined. Even though there was a slight difference among 42 specimens used in the test, results exceeded the quality standard both in Carbon-arc-lamp and Xenon arc-lamp. Therefore, it was confirmed that applying KS K ISO 105-B02 together in the KS K 0700-regulated Ministry of National Defense standard and purchase order would also fit.
