As the adoption of injection molding technology increases, injected-molded optical products require higher dimensional accuracy and optical stability than ever before. In the present study, four kinds of molding methods, i.e., conventional injection molding (CIM), injection/compression molding (ICM), rapid heat and cooling the mold(RHCM) and rapid injection/compression molding (RICM) were selected in order to investigate the optical anisotropy of a 7 inch Light Guide Plate(LGP) by examining the gap-wise distribution of birefringence and the extinction angle. The results indicate that the compression process can decrease flow-induced birefringence over the whole region and that rapid heating can decrease the birefringence level better than conventional molding. In addition, for the combination of compression and rapid heating a reversal flow was detected from the distribution of the extinction angle near the gate.

The effect of fuel mixing on soot structure with methane, ethane, and propane to ethylene-base counterflow diffusion flames has been investigated by measuring the volume fraction, number density, and particle size of soot by adopting the light extinction/scattering techniques. The experimental result showed that the mixing of ethane and propane in ethylene diffusion flame increased soot volume fraction while the mixing of methane decreased. As compare to the ethylene-base flame, the diameters of soot particles for mixture flames are slightly smaller. While the soot number densities for the mixture flames are much higher. Thus, the increase in the soot volume fraction can be attributed to the appreciably increased soot number density by the fuel mixing.
The effect of carbon dioxide addition on soot formation was investigated in jet diffusion flames in coflow. Flame temperature were measured with R-type thermocouple and the boundary temperature between blue and yellow flame was confirmed. Light-extinction method was introduced for the relative soot density (1-I/$I_0$) in the in-flame region. He-Ne laser with wave length at 632.8 nm was used for the light source, and the signal attenuated by absorption and scattering was detected directly. Oxidizer velocity effect on soot formation was studied to know that the thermal influence for soot formation. The results showed that the temperature of both blue and yellow flame were decreased according to the dilution of carbon dioxide but boundary temperature was nearly constant. The relative soot density was lower when carbon dioxide was added in oxidizer stream and oxidizer velocity increased. These were caused by the reduction of flame temperature and shorter residence time for soot growth. Also carbon dioxide addition enhanced the instability of jet flames like flickering, so the flame length was a little longer than pure ethylene/air flame.

It is known that he pollutant emitted from the combustion process of marine fuel oil causes air pollution and harmful effects to the human body. Accordingly, IMO regulates pollutants emitted from ships. However, the regulation of Particulate Matter (PM) is still in the process of debate, so preemptive action is needed. Fundamental research on PM is essential. In this study, the Dimensionless Light Extinction Constant ($K_e$) of fuel oil used in marine diesel engines was measured and analyzed to construct the basic data of the PM generated from marine-based fuel oil. The fuel oil used in the land diesel engine was measured in the same way for character comparison. Both fuel oils differ in sulfur content and density. The $K_e$ was measured via the optical method using a 633 nm laser and was determined by using the volume fraction of PM collected by the gravimetric filter method. The $K_e$ of the PM discharged from marine fuel oil is 8.28, and the land fuel oil is 8.44. The $K_e$ of two fuel oils was similar within the measurement uncertainty range. However, it was found by comparison with the value obtained by the Rayleigh-Limit solution that the light scattering portion could be large. Also, it was found that light extinction characteristics could be different due to the relationship between light transmittance and collected mass.

An intensive field study was carried out during Aug. 1993 in Seoul to study the characteristics of summertime visibility and diurnal trend of ionic composition of ambient particles. A transmissometer, nephelometer with heated and unheated inlets, PM3 fine particle sampler, and cascade impactor were used to measure optical and particle properties of ambient air. During this study period, a weak smog episode has occurred. Light scattering by particles is the most dominant factor on total light extinction. The effect of light absorption by particles in Seoul is much higher than other major cities in U.S.A. throughout the summer and fall with relatively constant values. The effect of water on $b_{sp}$ was small during the period. The particle size distribution shows a typical bimodal one. Sulfate, ammonium, chloride, and nitrate are the major chemical species in fine fraction aerosols, about 30% of toral mass concentration. Concentraion of sulfate is higher during the daytime while those of nitrate and chloride are higher during the nighttime. Ammonium concentration is constant through the daytime.
We demonstrate a cost effective broadcast signal transmission at 1.25-Gb/s with 100 GHz channel spacing based on a broadband light source (BLS) for a wavelength division multiplexing-passive optical network (WDM-PON). The BLS is implemented by using mutually injected Fabry-Perot laser diodes (MI F-P LDs). The error-free transmission without a forward error correction (FEC) is achieved by its low relative intensity noise (RIN). The number of usable modes is determined by RIN and/or extinction ratio (ER) in the spectrum sliced light output.
Dust has recently been found to be prevalent in compact binaries such as non-magnetic Cataclysmic Variable systems. As a possible source of this dust is from solid bodies, we explore impacts to non-magnetic Cataclysmic Variable disks. We use three-dimensional Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic simulations to search for impact signatures. From injections of whole bodies to these disks, we find pulse shapes in simulated bolometric light curves that resemble impact flashes in the light curves of the Shoemaker-Levy 9 event. As a result, we tentatively identify these light curve shapes as signatures of impacts.
Type Ia Supernovae are known as one of the most reliable standard candle regarding to our understanding their explosion mechanism. Recently NIR photometry of SN Ia shows us better promise on the distance measurement. NIR peak luminosity is relatively independent of light curve shape and effect of extinction is obviously less than in optical wavelengths. Among NIR bands, Y-band photometry is suggested to have less scatter and reduced reddening effect than other NIR wavelengths, furthermore it is still unexplored regime to verify its utility. Here we report Y-band light curve analysis of M101 SN Ia to investigate how Y-band can help us to determine accurate distance to the galaxy.

This study deals with the light environments and weather conditions affecting to the night illuminance over the Korean peninsula. The experiment was executed to analyze the effects on the illuminance at separate sites(Gyeryong and Pilseung) considering the different light environments. The analysis was applied to illuminance measurement from the lightmeter, which was developed for the IYA(International Year of Astronomy) 2009, in order to observe the illuminance of areal networks. The weather observations, such as the cloud cover and visibility, were used to understand the quantitative influence of the illuminance to the selected sites. The results show that the illuminance measurements are significantly different from data of the operational illuminance prediction model which simply applies extinction effect for the illuminance. It shows that these differences are caused by the light environments and weather conditions for each site. Therefore, it can be confirmed that the night illuminance is the output of interaction with the characteristics of light for luminous sources.
By measuring the brightness of night sky, we have investigated light pollution around the observatory in the College of Education, Seoul National University. As a result of measuring the extinction coefficient and photometric constants by standardization, in January 28, 2009, the extinction coefficient found to be $k_B$=0.359 and photometric constant was $C_B$=4.397. In March 27, 2009, extinction coefficients were $k_B$=0.896 and $k_V$=0.725, and photometric constants were $C_B$=6.235 and $C_V$=6.027. Brightness of the night sky was measured from east, west, south, and north each by altitude of $20^{\circ}$, $40^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, $75^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$. Data reduction and analysis was based on IRAF. Seeings for the each day of observation were 5.1 and 5.7 arcseconds in January 28 and March 27, respectively. Night sky spanned the magnitude range of $16{\leq}m_V$, $m_B{\leq}18$ We found that the brightness of night sky located at downtown was twice to four times brighter. On these observational conditions, limiting magnitude within 40cm-telescope becomes 11-13 magnitudes. Compared with Jan 28 and Mar 27, night sky brightness of January is 1 magnitude fainter than that of March in B filter.
