  • We have studied the effect of temperature and exposure time on the UV curing rate of Urethane Acrylate. UV dose has been modulated by changing the electric power, and temperature has been controled by coating rate and water temperature of the coating roll. Curing rate was evaluated by measuring gel fraction of the cured film. It has been found that effect of coating velocity on the gel fraction of the final film is predominant, but role of temperature of the UV chamber is negligible. These observations imply that exposure time of UV light is critical to have a fully cured film. To better understand the effect of design and operating condition of UV coater on the behavior of UV curing of Urethane Acrylate, we have also conducted heat-flux analysis of UV chamber.

  • We present results of time-series CCD photometry for 178 stars in the young open cluster M29 (=NGC6913). Total 1036 V-band CCD frames were collected for five nights between August 12 and September 13, 1994. The photometric precision is about 7.6 mmag for 9th-10th mag stars in M29 with exposure times of 30 seconds. From the dispersion diagram and the light curves, one detached eclipsing binary (HD194378) and two suspected variables are newly discovered. $A\;\gamma\;Cas$ type variable, V1322 Cyg, which has been known as a member of M29, did not show any light variations during the period of present observations, indicating that it passed the steady phase without the eruption during our observing runs.

  • Apartments with a southern exposure are often thought to have advantages in receiving winter sunlights and summer natural ventilation. However, as due-south-apartments increase recently, the consideration for residential environment for households with no southern exposure is necessary. In case of due-south-apartments, residents prefer east-sided apartments than west facing apartments which might receive more hot sunlight in the afternoon; however in case of west-oriented apartments with active ventilation, the interior area is bright until late afternoon without unpleasant heat and has advantage in light environment aspects. This study aims to compare and analyze merits and demerits of air flow and sunlighted environment of buildings through sunshine duration simulation using CFD simulation ad sunlights about southeast-sided and southwest-sided apartments based on general opinions for apartment directions. As results of the interior natural ventilation analysis, as the average air flow speed in southwest-sided apartments was 1m/s faster than that of southeast-sided, it has effects of lowering sensory temperature of residents in summer, and for sunlighted environment, southwest-sided apartments are advantageous for sunlighted area for duration time inside. As a result of the research, the calculation of physical residential environment of apartment residential space should be reached through integrated evaluation of natural ventilation and sunlighted time from placement and facing direction of the buildings considering characteristics and environment of each apartment, not based on general opinions.

  • We have carried out photometric follow-up observations of bright transiting extrasolar planets using the CbNUOJ 0.6 m telescope. We have tested the possibility of obtaining high photometric precision by applying the telescope defocus technique, allowing the use of several hundred seconds in exposure time for a single measurement. We demonstrate that this technique is capable of obtaining a root-mean-square scatter of sub-millimagnitude order over several hours for a V~10 host star, typical for transiting planets detected from ground-based survey facilities. We compared our results with transit observations from a telescope operated in in-focus mode. High photometric precision was obtained due to the collection of a larger amount of photons, resulting in a higher signal compared to other random and systematic noise sources. Accurate telescope tracking is likely to further contribute to lowering systematic noise by exposing the same pixels on the CCD. Furthermore, a longer exposure time helps reduce the effect of scintillation noise which otherwise has a significant effect for small-aperture telescopes operated in in-focus mode. Finally we present the results of modelling four light-curves in which a root-mean-square scatter of 0.70 to 2.3 milli-magnitudes was achieved.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) using erythrosine and a halogen light source to treat a biofilm formed on a machined surface titanium disk in vivo. Ten volunteers carried an acrylic appliance containing six machined surface titanium disks on the upper jaw over a period of five days. After the five days of biofilm formation period, the disks were removed. PDT using 20 ${\mu}M$ erythrosine and halogen light was then applied to the biofilms formed on the disks. Experimental samples were divided into a negative control group (no erythrosine and no irradiation), E0 group (erythrosine 60s + no irradiation), E30 group (erythrosine 60s + halogen light 30s), and E60 group (erythrosine 60s + halogen light 60s). Following PDT, the bacteria in the biofilm were found to be detached from each disk. Each suspension with detached bacteria were diluted and cultivated on a blood-agar plate for five days under anaerobic conditions. The cultivated bacterial counts in the E60 group were significantly lower than the control group (86.4%) or E0 group (76.7%). In the experimental groups also, the light exposure time and bacterial counts showed a negative correlation. In conclusion, PDT using erythrosine and halogen light has bactericidal effects on biofilms formed on a titanium disk in vivo. Notably, applying 20 ${\mu}M$ erythrosine and 60 seconds of halogen light irradiation had a significantly potent effect.

  • Light management technology is very important for thin film solar cells, which can reduce optical reflection from the surface of thin film solar cells or enhance optical path, increasing the absorption of the incident solar light. Using proper light trapping structures in hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) solar cells, the thickness of absorber layers can be reduced. Instead, the internal electric field in the absorber can be strengthened, which helps to collect photon generated carriers very effectively and to reduce light-induced loss under long-term light exposure. In this work, we introduced a chemical etching technology to make honey-comb textures on glass substrates and analyzed the optical properties for the textured surface such as transmission, reflection and scattering effects. Using ray optics and finite difference time domain method (FDTD) we represented the behaviors of light waves near the etched surfaces of the glass substrates and discussed to obtain haze parameters for the different honey-comb structures. The simulation results showed that high haze values were maintained up to the long wavelength range over 700 nm, and with the proper design of the honey-comb structure, reflection or transmission of the glass substrates can be enhanced, which will be very useful for the multi-junction (tandem or triple junction) thin film a-Si:H solar cells.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a various light curing time on the residual monomers released from light-cured dental sealant, and to examine the effectiveness of surface treatment in reducing the oxygen-inhibited layer of light-cured dental sealant($Helioseal^{(R)}$ F, Vivadent, Liechtenstein). Specimens were cured with a halogen light curing unit(XL 3000, 3M, USA) for 20, 40, 60s. Surface treatment of a light-cured dental sealant included no treatment(control group), a 10-seconds exposure to distilled water(Group I), 10-seconds manual application using a cotton pellet wetted with 75% alcohol(Group II), and 10-seconds application of a water/pumice slurry using a rubber cup on a slow-speed handpiece The specimens were eluted in distilled water for 10 minutes. All elutes were analyzed by HPLC for identification and quantitive analysis of monomers. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. 1. None of the chromatograms of the tested sealant displayed peaks with the same retention time as that of the standard solution, except for TEGDMA. 2. The release of TEGDMA decreased with increasing curing time in conventional halogen light. 3. All surface treatment group had a decrease of monomer release in comparison with no treatment group. 4. Treatment that Group III eliminated the greatest amount of any type of residual monomers. 5. The elution of unreacted monomers from curing with halogen curing unit for 60s and Group III was less than other groups.

  • Seed priming leading to improved emergences, germination speed and uniformity under unfavorable conditions without loss of longevity are the best level of techniques. We studied the possibility to obtain primed seed with reduced mean germination time (MGT) and uniformity but with simple, fast and effective methods. The experiments were carried out at $15^{\circ}C$ for 16 hours with priming treatment. To compare the effects of each treatment, we used 200mM $CaCl_2$ priming or hydro priming or no imbibition after ultrasonication or red light treatment. The light treatment was performed by irradiating 2000 lux of red light for 15, 30, 60, and 120 minutes. Addition, in order to investigate the effect of the priming solution, treated at 200mM $CaCl_2$ for 8 hours. Ultrasonication treatment was performed for 5, 10, and 20 minutes at exposures of 13.0, 17.3, and 21.6 kHz during priming. For liquid smoke (LS) treatment, seed soaked in 0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 5.0% and 10.0% of diluted water and 200mM $CaCl_2$ solution. After each treatment, the seeds were dried to moisture content ranged 5-8% at $25^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. The effect of seed treatment was evaluated with germination percentage (GP), MGT, germination index(GI), germination rate(GR), Germination Uniformity(GU) and heath seed percentage(HS). For several factors tested, we found that the desired germination improvement could be obtained by treating the seed with ultrasonication at 17.3 kHz for 5 minutes in water or red light exposure at 2000 lux for 120 min in water that resulted very similar to those used to 200mM $CaCl_2$ priming for 16 hrs. However, LS treatment showed no improvement in all diluted solution. Therefore, the methods applied ultrasonication and red light treatment showed high potential for fast and easy treatment avoiding pollution of salt solution waste.

  • In this study, we investigated the degradation of adhesives when exposed to ultraviolet light irradiation using samples of lacquer (L), treated lacquer (TL), lacquer mixed with glue (LG), and urushiol mixed with glue (UG). Four types of film specimens were collected under the ultraviolet exposure time, and gloss test, tensile shear strength test, scanning electron microscope analysis, and infrared spectroscopic analysis were conducted for the specimens. LG and UG showed lowering rate of gloss is somewhat later than L. Also, it was observed that with increasing exposure time to ultraviolet irradiation, the surface of L began to show spherical pits and cracks when the polysaccharide layers started to be exposed, whereas the surfaces of LG and UG remained smooth. The Infrared spectra of L and TL showed that the intensity of the overall peak decreased with increasing ultraviolet irradiation time. There was no change in the peak intensity of LG, but for UG, the peaks at $3013cm^{-1}$, $1593cm^{-1}$ and so on disappeared and the overall intensity declined. The tensile shear strength of LG and UG was maintained or increased as compared to the initial test, whereas the tensile shear strength of L decreased sharply after 600 h. LG and UG exhibited fewer changes as a result of high temperature and humidity conditions, and they retained their strength under UV exposure. These results indicate that LG and UG are more durable than L when subjected to environmental change.

  • We present test results of time-series CCD photometry to investigate the photometric precision of the BOAO (Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory) 1.8m telescope. A well-known field of the old open cluster M67, which includes two pulsating blue stragglers and two W UMa type binaries, was monitored for 3.5 hours on February 22, 1996. We have collected 148 V frames and 3 B frames. Photometric noises which consist mainly of photon noise and scintillation noise, were lowered down to about 1.9 mmag for stars of $10.\;^m5$ in M67 with exposure time of 20 seconds. From the C-M diagram for M67, a number of observational properties were derived; E(B-V) = 0.03, (V-Mv)o = 9.6, Age = 4 Gyr. We obtained light curves for four known variable stars and confirmed their variational characteristics. The pulsating blue stragglers show a low amplitude (about 0.01 mag) of light variation.
