The author analyzes the luminous efficiency of the phosphor-conversion white light-emitting diode (LED) that consists of a blue LED chip and a yellow phosphor. A theoretical model is derived to find the relation between luminous efficiency (LE) of a white LED, wall-plug efficiency (WPE) of a blue LED chip, and the phosphor absorption ratio of blue light. The presented model enables to obtain the theoretical limit of LE and the lower bound of WPE. When the efficiency model is applied to the measured results of a phosphor-conversion white LED, the limit theoretical value of LE is obtained to be 261 lm/W. In addition, for LE of 88 lm/W at 350 mA, the lower bound of WPE in the blue LED chip is found to be ~34%. The phosphor absorption ratio of blue light was found to have an important role in optimizing the luminous efficiency and colorimetric properties of phosphor-conversion white LEDs.
We investigate the temperature dependence of the phosphor conversion efficiency (PCE) of the phosphor material used in a white light-emitting diode (LED) consisting of a blue LED chip and yellow phosphor. The temperature dependence of the wall-plug efficiency (WPE) of the blue LED chip and the PCE of phosphor are separately determined by analyzing the measured spectrum of the white LED sample. As the ambient temperature increases from 20 to $80^{\circ}C$, WPE and PCE decrease by about 4.5% and 6%, respectively, which means that the contribution of the phosphor to the thermal characteristics of white LEDs can be more important than that of the blue LED chip. When PCE is decomposed into the Stokes-shift efficiency and the phosphor quantum efficiency (QE), it is found that the Stokes-shift efficiency is only weakly dependent on temperature, while the QE decreases rapidly with temperature. From 20 to $80^{\circ}C$ the phosphor QE decreases by about 7% while the Stokes-shift efficiency changes by less than 1%.
We have investigated the optical and electrical properties of surface mounted white light emitting diode (LED) chips prepared by using yellow phosphors on the blue LED chip. The yellow phosphor mixed with transparent epoxy was coated on the prepared LED chip. The optimum mixing conditions with epoxy and yellow phosphor is obtained at the mixing ratio of epoxy:yellow phosphor = 97:3 wt%. The maximum luminance and light emitting efficiency are above $80,000cd/m^2$ and 23.2 lm/W, respectively, at the bias voltage of 2.9 V. There was no distinct change in the luminance strength with changing of the yellow phosphor ratios. The current of the white LED chip is about 30 mA at 2.9 V.
Light-emitting diode(LEDs), diode arrays, and phosphor display panels are finding increased use in a variety of commercial applications. Present and anticipated application of these devices include solid state indicator(e.g., digital clocks, meter readout) and display systems(e.g., instrument panels, TV display), the application being determined by the light -output capability and size availability(cost) of the particular device. In this work, Phosphor based on ZnS:Cu are used. Relation by luminance with the thickness of insulating layer and phosphor layer are discussed. Increased thickness of insulating layer are stable on voltage to 300V. By considering thickness and voltage, optimal structure and thickness are investigated. Also in order to maximize even surface emission, various sieving process are introduced. Very similar phosphor particle size is selected. Luminance by various wave intensity is also investigated. 150cd/m$^2$ luminance are investigated in stable voltage and frequency.
A Wide Color Gamut Backlight system was studied using a three-band white Light-Emitting Diode. A three-band white light-emitting diode (LED) was fabricated using an InGaN-based blue LED chip that emits 445-nm blue peak, and a green phosphor and red phosphor that emit 535-nm green and 621-nm red peak emissions, respectively, when excited by 450-nm blue light. Using for this three-band white LED, wide color gamut backlight unit (BLU) was attained. The luminance of BLU and CIE 1931 chromaticity coordinates was $1,700Cd/m^2$ and (0.337, 0.346). Color filter matching simulations for this configuration show that the three-band white LED backlight can be enhanced by up to 16% over conventional white LED backlight color gamut.
Green phosphors $(Zn_{1-a-b}M_aM^{\prime}_b)_xGa_yS_{x+3y/2}:Eu^{2+}$ (M, M' = alkali earth ions) with x = 2 and y = 2-5 were prepared, starting from ZnO, MgO, $SrCO_3$, $Ga_2O_3$, $Eu_2O_3$, and S with a flux $NH_4F$ using a conventional solidstate reaction. A phosphor with the composition of $(Zn_{0.6}Sr_{0.3}Mg_{0.1})_2Ga_2S_5:Eu^{2+}$ produced the strongest luminescence at a 460-nm excitation. The observed XRD patterns indicated that the optimized phosphor consisted of two components: zinc thiogallate and zinc sulfide. The characteristic green luminescence of the $ZnS:Eu^{2+}$ component on excitation at 460 nm was attributed to the donor-acceptor ($D_{ZnGa_2S_4}-A_{ZnS}$) recombination in the hybrid boundary. The optimized green phosphor converted 17.9% of the absorbed blue light into luminescence. For the fabrication of light-emitting diode (LED), the optimized phosphor was coated with MgO using magnesium nitrate to overcome their weakness against moisture. The MgO-coated green phosphor was fabricated with a blue GaN LED, and the chromaticity index of the phosphor-cast LED (pc-LED) was investigated as a function of the wt % of the optimized phosphor. White LEDs were fabricated by pasting the optimized green (G) and the red (R) phosphors, and the commercial yellow (Y) phosphor on the blue chips. The three-band pc-WLED resulted in improved color rendering index (CRI) and corrected color temperature (CCT), compared with those of the two-band pc-WLED.
Nowadays, the glare towards the light-emitting diode (LED) lighting source has much attention due to its eco-friendly nature, reduced energy consumption, and low CO2 emission. LEDs can show versatile colors by changing the composition ratio of semiconductors. Phosphors re-emit light by absorbing light from LED, which is the key factor for emission. The endeavor to make replica of natural white light is increasing day by day. Industrially, blue LED chip crowned with a yellow phosphor coated lens gives low quality white light. Newly, many researchers are introducing modern approaches, adding red phosphor to the yellow phosphor to increase the quality of white light. Here, we synthesized structurally and chemically stable europium doped oxyapatite Ca8Gd2(PO4)6O2 nano-crystalline structures by a hydrothermal method. The ultrafine structures were formed due to the effect of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, which is confirmed by the transmission electron microscope images. The structural properties were analyzed using the X-ray diffraction patterns.
The discovery of new luminescent materials for use in light-emitting diodes(LEDs) has been of great interest, since LED-based solid state lighting applications are attracting a lot of attention in the energy saving and environmental fields. Recent research trends have centered on the discovery of new luminescent materials rather than on fine changes in well-known luminescent materials. In a sense, the novelty of our study beyond simple modification or improvement of existing phosphors. A good strategy for the discovery of new fluorescent materials is to introduce activators that are appropriate for conventional inorganic compounds, that have well-defined structures in the crystal structure database, but have not been considered as phosphor hosts. Another strategy is to discover new host compounds with structures that cannot be found in any existing databases. We have pursued these two strategies at the same time using composite search technology with particle swarm optimization(PSO). In this study, using PSO, we have tracked down a search space composed of Sr-Al-Si-O-N and have discovered a new phosphor structure with yellow luminescence; this material is a potential candidate for UV-LED applications.
