  • To investigate the effects of light on growth in fish, olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) were reared under four kinds of monochromatic light-emitting diodes (LEDs) at violet (400 nm), blue (465 nm), green (508 nm), and red (635 nm) wavelengths, along with a white fluorescent lamp as control. The rearing experiments were carried out with 15 fish per tank under different wavelength illumination at the same intensity. After rearing the fish under a 12 hr:12 hr light:dark photoperiod for 60 days, percentage increases in weight gain of $269.92{\pm}13.02$, $363.21{\pm}3.74$, $433.22{\pm}4.83$, $290.17{\pm}11.83$, and $340.74{\pm}26.58%$ and increases in specific growth rates (SGR) of $2.18{\pm}0.06$, $2.56{\pm}0.07$, $2.79{\pm}0.01$, $2.27{\pm}0.05$, and $2.47{\pm}0.10$ were observed in fish grown under the illumination of red, blue, green, and violet LEDs and the white fluorescent light, respectively. The results show faster growth in fish reared under green LEDs, but slower growth in those reared under red light. Differences in most blood parameters were minor, aside from an increased level of glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase in the fish grown under red LED illumination. Histological analysis of the retina showed few changes in the ratio of photoreceptor layer thickness to total retina thickness in fish reared under the green LEDs compared to those in other illumination groups. These results indicate that green LED light can foster increased growth in olive flounder with no distinct harmful effects on their light-sensitive photoreceptor layers.

  • We have prepared alumina (Al2O3) doped zinc oxide (AZO) films by DC magnetron sputtering (MS) technique and obtained higher self surface texturing at a high target angle (f). We have characterized the films and applied it as a front electrode of a single junction amorphous silicon solar cell. At a lower f the deposited films show higher values of optical gap (Eg), charge carriers mobility & concentration, crystallite grain size and wider wavelength range of transmission. At higher target angle the sheet resistance, surface roughness, haze factor etc for the films increase. For f=72.5o the haze factor for diffused transmission becomes 6.46% at 540 nm wavelength. At f=72.5o the material shows a reduction in crystallinity and evolution of a hemispherical-type sub-micron surface textures. A Monte Carlo method (MCM) of simulation of the AZO film deposition shows that such an enhanced self-surface texturing of the films at higher f is possible.

  • This study describes a simple and effective experimental determination of pump-power dependence of refractive indices and dispersions of erbium-doped fibers (EDFs) of various doping concentrations. Systermatical analysis on light-induced change of the refractive indices and dispersion for a signal wavelength range of 1510 nm-1560 nm with a pump of 980 nm wavelength has been made by measuring the pump-induced phase changes of the signal beam in Mach-Zehnder type interferometer, which has an optically pumped EDF and a reference EDF in each of the two arms, respectively. The measured pump-induced refractive indices match well with the theoritically predicted ones. The results show that pump-induced refractivity and dispersion changes of the EDF increase with the increasing pump power and $Er^{3+}$-doping concentration as expected from theory.

  • The Infrared Camera onboard the AKARI satellite carried out spectroscopic observations with a grism mode named NG, whose wavelength coverage was $2.5-5.0{\mu}m$. We reinvestigate the current flux calibration for the NG grism mode, with which calculated flux density implausibly decreases at $4.9{\mu}m$ especially for red objects due to the second-order light contamination. We perform a new spectral response calibration using blue and red standard objects simultaneously. New response curves which contain both the first-and second-order light are able to separate each contribution consistently and useful for studies of red objects such as CO ro-vibrational absorption in active galactic nuclei.

  • For future space IR missions, such as SPICA, it is crucial to establish an experimental method for evaluating the performance of mid-IR detectors. In particular, the wavelength dependence of the sensitivity is important but difficult to be measured properly. We are now preparing a testing system for mid-IR Si:As/Si:Sb detectors on SPICA. We have designed a cryogenic optical system in which IR signal light from a pinhole is collimated, passed through an optical filter, and focused onto a detector. With this system, we can measure the photoresponse of the detector for various IR light using optical filters with different wavelength properties. We have fabricated aluminum mirrors which are adopted to minimize thermal distortion effects and evaluated the surface figure errors. The total wavefront error of the optical system is $1.3{\mu}m$ RMS, which is small enough for the target wavelengths ($20-37{\mu}m$) of SPICA. The point spread function measured at a room temperature is consistent with that predicted by the simulation. We report the optical performance of the system at cryogenic temperatures.

  • This paper presents a new method for the improvement of color temperature without the change of the driving scheme using transparent dielectric layers with various metal oxides (CeO$_2$, Co$_3$O$_4$, CuO, Fe$_2$O$_3$, MnO$_2$, NiO) in plasma display panels (PDP). In this study, we fabricated ZnO-B$_2$O$_3$-SiO$_2$-Al$_2$O$_3$ glasse with various metal oxides and examined the optical properties of these glasses. As the metal oxides were added to the glasses, the visible transmittances of the dielectric layers decreased and the transmittances in special wavelength regions were reduced at different rates. The change of the transmittance in each wavelength range induced the variation of the visible emission spectra and the change of the color temperature in the PDP. The addition of Co$_3$O$_4$ and CuO slightly decreased the intensity of the blue light, but the intensities of the green and the red light were significantly decreased. Therefore, the color temperature can be improved from 6087K to 7378K and 7057K, respectively.

  • This paper introduces a technology for robust and low maintenance cost sensor network capable to detect accelerations below a micro-g in a wide frequency bandwidth (above 1,000 Hz). Sensor networks with such performance are critical for navigation, seismology, acoustic sensing, and for the health monitoring of civil structures. The approach is based on the fabrication of an array of high sensitivity accelerometers, each utilizing Fabry-Perot cavity with wavelength-dependent reflectivity to allow embedded optical detection and serialization. The unique feature of the approach is that no local power source is required for each individual sensor. Instead one global light source is used, providing an input optical signal which propagates through an optical fiber network from sensor-to-sensor. The information from each sensor is embedded onto the transmitted light as an intrinsic wavelength division multiplexed signal. This optical "rainbow" of data is then assessed providing real-time sensing information from each sensor node in the network. This paper introduces the Fabry-Perot based accelerometer and examines its critical features, including the effects of imperfections and resolution estimates. It then presents serialization techniques for the creation of systems of arrayed sensors and examines the effects of serialization on sensor response. Finally, a fabrication process is proposed to create test structures for the critical components of the device, which are dynamically characterized.

  • In order to color analyze of in Farnsworth Test Panel D-15 using a Protan, Deutan and Tritan test, we introduced the CIE system so that measured the reflectance light spectrum intensity in the 380~780 nm wavelength regions. The color difference of Panel D-15 was depended on the intensity of reflectance ratio in the 400~450 nm, 500~600 nm and more than 650 nm wavelength regions. From the reflectance spectra, we obtained the tristimulus X, Y, Z values, the $L^*a^*b^*$ and $L^*ab$ values of the 3-Dimension CIELAB system in a complement plane and light-darkness axis, the $U^*V^*$ values and the x, y values of chromaticity coordinates.

  • We investigate the effects of the power and wavelength of externally injection seeded light on timing jitter and pulse width in a gain-switched $1.55\mu\textrm{m}$ DFB semiconductor laser by numerical simulation based on the transmission line laser model. As external seeding power increases, the timing jitter decreases and the pulse width increases. The lowest timing jitter is observed when the seed wavelength is aligned with the chirped spectrum center. By external seeding, we can decrease the timing jitter up to 1/2.7 without noticeable increase in pulse width. Our simulation results reasonably well agree with our sampled experiment and the other published papers. This proves the validity of our model to analyze a system based on a semiconductor laser. laser.

  • We investigate the propagation characteristics of a pulse laser in a time-of-flight laser range finder (TOF-LRF) system with variations in atmospheric conditions, such as temperature, pressure, relative humidity, and the concentration of $CO_2$. The measurement error of distance related with the group velocity change in the TOF-LRF system is analyzed by considering the refractive index of the standard atmosphere with variations in atmospheric conditions. The dependence of the pulse width broadening induced by chromatic dispersion of the standard atmosphere on the operating wavelength and the initial pulse width of the light sources is discussed. The transmission of air with variations in the relative humidity or the concentration of $CO_2$ is analyzed by using different values of absorption coefficients depending on the operation wavelength of the light source in the TOF-LRF system.
