  • An experimental study was carried out in two laboratory-scale reactors to investigate the effect of heating rate on the behavior of flame front in a pulverized coal flame. Each. reactors had different heating mechanisms. For reactor A losing large heat through transparent quartz wall. pulverized coal particles were ignited by secondary air of 1050K. Flame front could be visualized through the transparent wall. Reactor B was insulated with castable refractory to minimize the heat loss through the reactor wall and accompanied with secondary air of 573K. Flame front was estimated from the gas temperature and species concentration measured using R-type thermocouple(Pt-Pt/Rh 13%) and gas chromatograph at various coal-air ratios and swirl intensities. The flame front position was closely related with the magnitude of heating rate. The heating rate for lifted flame was of the order of $10^4$ to $10^5K/s$ and for coal Ignition at least over $10^4K/s$. The heating mechanism had little impact on the extinction limits. The weak swirl number of 0.68 forced the flame front to move toward the upstream by the rapid mixing of coal and air. The primary/secondary momentum ratio was an inappropriate variable to distinct the liftoff of flame.

  • In the paper we investigate characteristics of a transitional behavior from a premixed flame to a triple flame in a lifted flame according to the change of equivalence ratio. In previous study, we showed that the stabilized laminar lifted flame regime is categorized by regimes of premixed flame, triple flame and critical flame. A gas-chromatograph is used to measure concentration field, a smoke-wire system is used to measure streak line, and a PIV system is used to measure velocity field in lifted flame. In the visualization experiment of smoke wire, the flow divergence and redirection reappeared in premixed flame as well as triple flame. Thus we cannot express the flame front of lifted flame has a behavior of triple flame with only flow divergence and redirection. In PIV measurement, flow velocity for those three flames has minimum value at the tip of flame front. To differentiate triple flame and premixed flame, $\Phi$ value of partially premixed fraction is employed. The partially premixed fraction $\Phi$ was constant in premixed flame. In critical flame small gradient appears over the whole regime. In triple flame, typical diffusion flame shape is obtained as parabolic distribution type due to diffusion flame trailing.

  • This paper describes the breakdown characteristics of GIS by the free conducting particles under alternating voltage. If the conducting particles are present within the GIS, they can cause decrease in breakdown voltages. Various materials and sizes of free conducting particles were used to study the liftoff electric field and breakdown voltage. The measured lift-off electric fields were compared with the calculated ones for copper, steel and aluminium wire-type conducting particles. As an experimental result, it is shown that the breakdown voltages of the GIS chamber with conducting particles were lower than those without conducting particles, and were markedly dependent on the particle material and the particle sizes. Free conducting particles are important factor in particle-triggered breakdown of the GIS.he GIS.

  • High efficient and environment friendly combustion technologies are used to be operated an extreme condition, which results in unintended flame instability such as extinction and oscillation. The use of electromagnetic energy is one of methods to enhance the combustion stability and a microwave as electromagnetic wave is receiving increased attention recently because of its high performance and low-cost system. In this study, an experiment was performed with jet diffusion flames induced by microwave. Micro jet was introduced to simulate the high velocity of industrial combustor. The results show that micro jet flames had three different modes with increasing oxidizer velocity; attached yellow flame, lifted flame, and lifted partially premixed flame. As a microwave was induced to flames, the overall flame stability and blowout limit were extended with the higher microwave power. Especially the interaction between a flame and a microwave was shown clearly in the partially premixed flame, in which the lift-off height decreased and NOx emission measured in post flame region increased with increasing microwave power. It might be attributed to increase of reactivity due to the abundance of radical pool and the enhanced absorption to thermal energy.

  • A liquid rocket engine goes through many tests to prove its performance before liftoff. It means the tests for setting ignition and start-up conditions or a test on design condition, which verifies the design performance. However, the development process requires verification of performance under off-design conditions through tests involving different operating conditions, which affects the duration of engine development. The off-design performance test is performed by altering the conditions of the propellant supplied to the engine in conjunction with the engine performance test that varies the opening of the control valves in the engine. This paper is based on the results of the engine tests performed at the KSLV-II engine test facilities in the Naro Space Center and describes the operations of the test facility for off-design condition test that changes the inlet conditions of the turbo-pump due to changes in the pressure and temperature of the propellant supplied to the test engines.

  • An efficient evaluation method for the probability of a tornado missile strike without using the Monte Carlo method is proposed in this paper. A major part of the proposed probability evaluation is based on numerical results computed using an in-house code, Tornado-borne missile analysis code, which enables us to evaluate the liftoff and flight behaviors of unconstrained objects on the ground driven by a tornado. Using the Tornado-borne missile analysis code, we can obtain a stochastic correlation between local wind speed and flight distance of each object, and this stochastic correlation is used to evaluate the conditional strike probability, $Q_V(r)$, of a missile located at position r, where the local wind speed is V. In contrast, the annual exceedance probability of local wind speed, which can be computed using a tornado hazard analysis code, is used to derive the probability density function, p(V). Then, we finally obtain the annual probability of tornado missile strike on a structure with the convolutional integration of product of $Q_V(r)$ and p(V) over V. The evaluation method is applied to a simple problem to qualitatively confirm the validity, and to quantitatively verify the results for two extreme cases in which an object is located just in the vicinity of or far away from the structure.

  • Rocket noise generated from the exhaust plume produces the enormous acoustic loading, which adversely affects the integrity of the electronic components and payload (satellite) at liftoff. The prediction of rocket noise consists of two steps: the supersonic jet exhaust is simulated by a method of the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and an acoustic transport method, such as the Helmholtz-Kirchhoff integral, is applied to predict the noise field. One of the difficulties in the CFD step is to remove the boundary reflection artifacts from the finite computation boundary. In general, artificial damping, known as a sponge layer, is added nearby the boundary to attenuate these reflected waves but this layer demands a large computational area and an optimization procedure of related parameters. In this paper, a cost-efficient way to separate the reflected waves based on the two microphone method is firstly introduced and applied to the computation result of a laboratory-scale supersonic jet noise without sponge layers.

  • While major solar proton events (SPEs) come from the coronal mass eject (CME)-driven shocks in solar wind, there are many evidences that potentiality of CMEs to generate SPEs depends on its early evolution near the Sun and on different solar activities observed around the CME liftoff time. To decipher origin of SPE release, we have investigated onset time comparison of the SPE with CME, metric type II radio burst, and hard X-ray flare. For this, we select 30 SPEs observed from 1997 to 2006 by using the particle instrument ERNE onboard SOHO, which allows proton flux anisotropy measurement in the energy range ~10 - 50MeV. Onset time of the SPEs is inferred by considering the energy-dependent proton transport time. As results, we found that (1) SPE onset time is comparable to that of type II but later than type III onset time and HXR start time, (2) SPE onset time is mostly later than the peak time of HXR flare, (3) almost half of the SPE onsets occurred after the HXR emission, and (4) there are two groups of CME height at the onset time of SPE; one is the height below 5 Rs (low corona) and the other is above 5Rs (high corona). In this talk, we will present the onset time comparison and discuss about the origin of the SPE onset.
