The iterative boundary element method (IBEM) developed originally before for cavitating two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) hydrofoils moving under free surface is modified and applied to the case of 2-D (two-dimensional) airfoils and 3-D (three-dimensional) wings over water. The calculation of the steady-state flow characteristics of an inviscid, incompressible fluid past 2-D airfoils and 3-D wings above free water surface is of practical importance for air-assisted marine vehicles such as some racing boats including catamarans with hydrofoils and WIG (Wing-In-Ground) effect crafts. In the present paper, the effects of free surface both on 2-D airfoils and 3-D wings moving steadily over free water surface are investigated in detail. The iterative numerical method (IBEM) based on the Green's theorem allows separating the airfoil or wing problems and the free surface problem. Both the 2-D airfoil surface (or 3-D wing surface) and the free surface are modeled with constant strength dipole and constant strength source panels. While the kinematic boundary condition is applied on the airfoil surface or on the wing surface, the linearized kinematic-dynamic combined condition is applied on the free surface. The source strengths on the free surface are expressed in terms of perturbation potential by applying the linearized free surface conditions. No radiation condition is enforced for downstream boundary in 2-D airfoil and 3-D wing cases and transverse boundaries in only 3-D wing case. The method is first applied to 2-D NACA0004 airfoil with angle of attack of four degrees to validate the method. The effects of height of 2-D airfoil from free surface and Froude number on lift and drag coefficients are investigated. The method is also applied to NACA0015 airfoil for another validation with experiments in case of ground effect. The lift coefficient with different clearance values are compared with those of experiments. The numerical method is then applied to NACA0012 airfoil with the angle of attack of five degrees and the effects of Froude number and clearance on the lift and drag coefficients are discussed. The method is lastly applied to a rectangular 3-D wing and the effects of Froude number on wing performance have been investigated. The numerical results for wing moving under free surface have also been compared with those of the same wing moving above free surface. It has been found that the free surface can affect the wing performance significantly.
The projectile afterbodies for zero-lift drag reduction has been analyzed using the Navier-Stokes equations with the $\kappa-\epsilon$ turbulence model. The numerical method of a second order upwind scheme has been used on unstructured adaptive meshes. Base drag reduction methods that have been found effective on axisymmetric bodies include boattailing, base bleed, base comustion, locked vortex afterbodies and multistep afterbodies. In this paper, the charateristics of turbulence flow have been studied for geomeries of multistep afterbodies. The important geometrical and flow parameters relevant to the design of such afterbodies have been identified by number, length and height of step. The flow over multistep afterbodies has been analyzed including expansion waves, recompression waves, recirculating flow, shear flow and wake flow. The numerical results have been compared and analyzed with the experimental datum.
Numerical simulations are conducted for laminar flow past a sphere rotating In the transverse direction, in order to investigate the effect of the rotation on the characteristics of flow over a sphere. The Reynolds numbers considered are Re=100, 250 and 300 based on the free-stream velocity and the sphere diameter, and the rotational speeds are in the range of $0{\leq}{\omega}{\leq}1$, where ${\omega}^{\ast}$ is the maximum velocity on the sphere surface normalized by the free-stream velocity. At ${\omega}^{\ast}=0$ (without rotation), the flow past the sphere experiences steady axisymmeoy, steady planar-symmetry and unsteady planar-symmetry, respectively, at Re=100, 250 and 300. However, with rotation, the flow becomes planar-symmetric for all the cases investigated and the symmetry plane is orthogonal to the axis of the rotation. The flow is also steady or unsteady depending on both the Reynolds number and the rotational speed, and the vortical structures behind the sphere are significantly modified by the rotation. For example, at Re=300, hairpin vortices completely disappear in the wake at ${\omega}^{\ast}=0.4\;and\;0.6$, and at ${\omega}^{\ast}=1$ vortical structures of a high frequency are newly generated due to the shear layer instability. It is also shown that with increasing rotational speed, the time-averaged drag and lift coefficients increase monotonically.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the aerodynamic characteristics of three hypersonic configurations including pure liftbody configuration, pure waverider configuration and liftbody integrated with waverider configuration. Hypersonic forbodies were designed based on these configurations. For the purpose to integrate with ramjet or scramjet, all the forebodies were designed integrated with hypersonic inlet. To better understand the forebody performance, three dimensional flow field calculation of these hypersonic forebodies integrated with hypersonic inlet were conducted in the design and off design conditions. The computational results show that waverider offer an aerodynamic performance advantage in the terms of higher lift-drag ratios over the other two configurations. Liftbody offer good aerodynamic performance in subsonic region. The aerodynamic performance of the liftbody integrated with waverider configuration is not comparable to that of pure waverider in the terms of lift-drag ratios and is not comparable to that of pure liftbody in subsonic. But the liftbody integrated with waverider configuration exhibit good lateral-directional and longitudinal-directional stability characteristics. Both pure waverider and liftbody integrated with waverider configuration can provide relatively uniform flow for the inlet and offer good aerodynamic characteristics in the terms of recovery coefficient of total pressure and uniformity coefficient.
Purpose: The most important element of an agricultural helicopter is the rotor blade realizing lift force. In order to improve the performance of the rotor blades, two types (KA152313 and KB203611) of airfoils were designed and compared. Methods: The nose shape of the KB203611 airfoil was 'drooped' and 'sharp' compared to the leading edge of the KA152313 airfoil. The performance of the experimental airfoils was simulated using CFD-ACE program, and lifts were measured in situ using the 'AgroHeli-4G', a prototype helicopter. Results: Simulated lifts of the blade with the KA152313 airfoil showed proper values for a wide range of angles of attack between $14^{\circ}{\sim}18^{\circ}$, while the simulated lift of the KB203611 blade exhibited maximum values near $13^{\circ}{\sim}14^{\circ}$. In the lift measurements, the range of operable angles of attack was a collective pitch angle at the grip (GP) of $12^{\circ}{\sim}18^{\circ}$ for the KA152313 blade. On the other hand, the range of angles of attack for the KB203611 blade was a GP of $12^{\circ}{\sim}14^{\circ}$. Conclusions: The blade of KA152313 performed well over a wide range of AoAs and the blade of KB203611 performed better at low AoAs. In this study, a variative airfoil blade, gradually emerging from grip to tip using the two different airfoils, was suggested.
Immersed boundary-Lattice Boltzmann Method (IB-LBM) is used for the analysis of flow over the circular cylinder in the concept of fluid-structure interaction analysis (FSI). Recently, IB-LBM has shown the enormous possibility for the application of various biomedical engineering fields, such as the movement of a human body or the behavior of the blood cells and/or particle-based drug delivery system in blood vessels. In order for the numerical analysis of the interaction between fluid and solid object, immersed boundary method and lattice Boltzmann method are coupled to analyze the flow over a cylinder for low Reynolds laminar flow (Re=10, 20, 40 and 100) with Zhu-He boundary condition at the boundary. With the developed IB-LBM, the flow around the cylinder in the uniform flow is analyzed for the laminar flow and the drag and lift coefficients and recirculation length are compared to the previous results.

The present study has numerically investigated two-dimensional laminar flow over a steadily rotating circular cylinder with a uniform planar shear, where the free-stream velocity varies linearly across the cylinder. It aims to find the combined effect of rotation and shear on the flow. Numerical simulations using the immersed boundary method are performed for the ranges of $-2.5{\le}\alpha{\le}2.5$ and $0{\le}K{\le}0.2$ at a fixed Reynolds number of Re=100, where a and K are respectively the dimensionless rotational speed and velocity gradient. Results show that the positive shear, with the upper side having the higher free-stream velocity than the lower one, favors the effect of the counter-clockwise rotation $(\alpha<0)$ but countervails that of the clockwise rotation $(\alpha>0)$. Accordingly, the absolute critical rotational speed, below which vortex shedding occurs, decreases with increasing K for $(\alpha>0)$, but increases for $\alpha>0$. The vortex shedding frequency increases with increasing \alpha (including the negative) and the variation becomes steeper with increasing K. The mean lift slightly decreases with increasing K regardless of the rotational direction. However, the mean drag and the amplitudes of the lift- and drag-fluctuations strongly depend on the direction. They all decrease with increasing K for $\alpha>0$, but increase for $\alpha<0$. Flow statistics as well as instantaneous flow folds are presented to identify the characteristics of the flow and then to understand the underlying mechanism.

Offshore subsea pipelines must be stable against external loadings, which are mostly due to waves and currents. To determine the stability of a subsea pipeline on the seabed, the Morrison equation has been applied with prediction of inertia and drag forces. When the pipeline is placed in a trench, the force acting on it is reduced considerably. Therefore, to consider the stability of a pipeline in a trench, one must employ reduction factors. To investigate the stability of various trenches, we numerically simulated flows over various trenches and compared them with experimental data from PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) measurements. The present results were produced ar Reynolds numbers ranging from 6$\times$10$^3$to 3$\times$10(sub)5 based on the diameter of the cylinder. Quasi-periodic flow patterns computed by large-eddy simulation were compared with experimental data in terms of mean flow characteristics fro typical trench configurations (W/H=1 and H/D=3, 4). The stability for various trench conditions was addressed in terms of mean amplitudes of oscillating lift and drag, and the reduction factor for each case was suggested for pipeline design.

We investigate the aerodynamic performance of the dragonfly wing which has the cross-sectional corrugation by using the static 2-dimensional unsteady simulation. Computational condition is at Re=150, 1400 and 10,000 with the angles of attack from 0 to 40 degrees. As computational results, the increment of the lift coefficient by corrugation is nearly constant over the critical angle of attack. Also, upper side corrugation of the wing have very little influence on increase of the lift coefficient.
