  • Waste Thermal Pyrolysis Melting process was proposed and has been studied in order to prevent air pollution by dioxin and fly ash generated from combustion process for disposal of waste. In this study, applicability as the fuel of diffusion burner of synthesis gas formed from Waste Thermal Pyrolysis process was addressed. Results showed that there is no big difference in the flame shape between MNDF and SNDF, and lift off was detected in MIDF but flame is more stable in SIDF which contains hydrogen with high combustion velocity as flow rate in first nozzle is increased. And radiation heat flux in inverse diffusion flame of synthesis gas was found to be more by 1.5 times than that in inverse diffusion flame of methane because of higher mole fraction of $CO_2$ with high emissivity in product gas.

  • The fuel in conventional liquid fuel combustor is atomized by spray method for high efficiency and low emissions. To improve the overall fuel efficiency and lower pollutant emissions in liquid fuel combustion systems, the effective spatial and temporal separation of droplet evaporation from normal spray process is needed. In this paper, the recuperation of high temperature burnt gas for fuel evaporation was proposed to develop a cylindrical premixed combustor. The recuperation process using U shaped tube is effective to evaporate the liquid fuel. The results show that the flame mode is changed into red radiation flame, blue flame and lift off flame with decreasing equivalence ratio as gas fuel combustion mode. In particular, the blue flame is found to be very stable at heating load 9.2 kW and equivalence ratio 0.731. NOx was measured blow 105 ppm ($O_2$ zero base) from equivalence ratio 0.705 to 0.835. CO which is a very important emission index in liquid fuel combustor was observed below 5 ppm ($O_2$ zero base) under the same equivalence region.

  • In this study, the combustion characteristics were investigated with the variation of design factors on multiple slit gas burner. The design factors consist of slit height, width, spacing, and inner length. The combustion characteristics were made analysis of the CO emission and NOx emission by using CO analyzer and NOx analyzer. The lower perimeter to area and the narrow spacing extends the lift-flame limit. The CO emission increases with the increasing perimeter to area ratio at the same condition. The NOx emission is found to be less significant with the port perimeter to area ratio. The flame interference might highly depend on the spacing and port perimeter to area ratio, and it also affects the burner performance.

  • Combustion-driven oscillations in a surface burner have been investigated to clarify their characteristics. A model combustor is made and the oscillation frequencies are measured for various dimensions of the combustor. It is found that there are two modes of oscillations; one is the 'acoustic mode' at high frequencies, associated with the acoustic mode of the combustion system and the other is the 'combustion mode' at low frequencies around 100 Hz, associated with the instability of the flame. Acoustic mode is excited when the surface burner is placed where the phase of particle velocity leads that of acoustic pressure by $90^{\circ}$, for all the combustion conditions. Combustion mode is driven at high combustion rate by the lift of unstable flame near the lower limit of the combustible equivalence ratio. Combustion mode is greatly influenced by the inlet temperature of the premixed gas. When the inlet temperature is very high, the combustion mode does not occur.

  • The characteristics of nonpremixed interacting flames are investigated in the parameter of nozzle configuration and nozzle separation distane, s. Three nozzle arrangements - diamond 4 nozzle, linear 5 nozzle and cross 5 nozzle- are used. When s is about 10 nozzle diameter, flames lift from the nozzle at the highest fuel flowrate compared with the other s cases. Normally flames are extinguished at the lifted states. Flowrates when blowout occurs are affected by the nozzle configuration, nozzle seperation distance. Blowout flowrates for the diamond- or cross-shaped nozzle cases are parabolic function of s. For 5 cross nozzle case, flames extinguished at 3.3 times higher flowrate than that of single equivalent area nozzle. Turbulent liftoff heights are not function of flowrates for these cases.

  • This experiment is performed to investigate the effects of the emulsion on the flame temperature and soot formation in a diesel engine. The two-color method is used to measure the flame temperature for combustion of emulsified diesel in the Rapid Compression and Expansion Machine(RCEM). The concentration of soot is estimated via calculation of the KL factor. The solenoid valve, elecronic controller and needle lift sensor are used to control the exact injection timing and duration under various operating conditions. According to the results the soot concentration is reduced with the increasing W/O while the temperature reduced. The pressure data and the flame images captured by a high speed camera show that the ignition delay of emulsified diesel increase the duration of premixed combustion. The sizes of water drops are measured to be about 10${\mu}m$ by a microscope.

  • Generation mechanisms of pressure waves from the H-IIA launch vehicle are analyzed numerically. The Mach wave radiated downstream from wavy shearlayer of supersonic exhaust plume is revealed to be the dominant noise source. Reflecting from the constructions of the launch-pad, the Mach wave turns to propagate to the vehicles. It was also found that the fluctuating supersonic plume entering into the flame duct is the dominant noise source that appears in the flame duct. Then, the pressure wave propagates through the flame duct and is ejected outside to the vehicle.

  • The use of electromagnetic wave has been interested in various energy industry because it enhances a flame stability and provides higher safety environments. However it might increase the pollutant emissions such as NOx and soot, and have harmful influence on human and environments. Therefore, it is very important to understand interaction mechanism between flame and electromagnetic wave from environmental point of view. In this study, an experiment was performed with jet diffusion flames induced by electromagnetic wave. Microwave was used as representative electromagnetic wave and a flickering flame was introduced to simulate the more similar combustion condition to industry. The results show that the induced microwave enhances the flame stability and blowout limit. The unstable lifted flickering flames under low fuel/oxidizer velocity is changed to stable attached flames or lift-off flames when microwave applied to the flames, which results from the abundance of radical pool. However, NOx emission was increased monotonically with increasing the microwave power as microwave power increased up to 1.0 kW. The effects might be attributed to the heating of combustion field and thermal NOx mechanism will be prevailed. Soot particle was examined at the post flame region by TEM grid. The morphology of soot particle sampled in the microwave induced flames was similar to the incipient soot that is not agglomerated and contain a lots of liquid phase hydrocarbon such as PAH, which soot particle formed near reaction zone is oxidized on the extended yellow flame region and hence only unburned young particles are emitted on the post flame region.

  • In order to analyze combustion characteristics of methane-oxygen diffusion flame in a model combustor, combustion experiments were carried out under various spray conditions of propellant scrutinizing combustion stability limit and flame shapes. As the propellant approached the theoretical equivalence ratio condition, a stable detached flame was observed even under high oxygen Reynolds number. And the length of the visible flame increased and the lift-off distance of the flame exhibited a tendency toward decrease. Due to the swirl effect of the propellant by the swirl-coaxial injector, a wide and short flame was produced. Thus, it may be appropriate to employ the swirl-coaxial injector in thrusters having a limited physical dimension.

  • Flame flickering occurs mainly because of the buoyancy force for pool fires under ambient air. The cup-burner flame was used for experimental investigation of the effect of the oxidizer velocity on the gravitational instability. The results showed that the flickering frequency decreased with increasing oxidizer velocity. The frequency-buoyancy relation with nondimensional variables coincided with that of the buoyant flume and pool fires when the characteristic velocity was defined as the difference between the fuel and oxidizer velocities, which implies that the origin of the gravitational instability is the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in the shear layer. The effect of the oxidizer composition on the instability was also examined through nitrogen dilution in the oxidizer stream. As the concentration of inert gas increased, the length of the blue flame increased and lift-off behavior was observed. The oscillation frequency was independent of the dilution ratio, but was related to the local flame structure.
