The lift and drag forces produced by a wing of a given cross-sectional profile are dependent on the wing planform and the angle of attack. Aspect ratio is the ratio of the wing span to the average chord. For conventional fixed wing aircrafts, high aspect ratio wings produce a higher lift to drag ratio than low ones for flight at subsonic speeds. Therefore, high aspect ratio wings are used on aircraft intended for long endurance. However, birds and insects flap their wings to fly in the air and they can change their wing motions. Their wing motions are made up of translation and rotation. Therefore, we tested flapping motions with parameters which affect rotational motion such as the angle of attack and the wing beat frequency. The half elliptic shaped wings were designed with the variation of aspect ratio from 4 to 11. The flapping device was operated in the water to reduce the wing beat frequency according to Reynolds similarity. In this study, the aerodynamic forces, the time-averaged force coefficients and the lift to drag ratio were measured at Reynolds number 15,000 to explore the aerodynamic characteristics with the variation of aspect ratio. The maximum lift coefficient was turned up at AR=8. The mean drag coefficients were almost same values at angle of attack from $10^{\circ}$ to $40^{\circ}$ regardless of aspect ratio, and the mean drag coefficients above angle of attack $50^{\circ}$ were decreased according to the increase of aspect ratio. For flapping motion the maximum mean lift to drag ratio appeared at AR=8.
Abstract In the present study, the characteristics of kinematics and dynamics in the fluttering motion of free-falling plates are investigated at Reynolds number of $10^5$. We record quasi-two-dimensional trajectories of free-falling plates with and without superhydrophobic coating using high-speed camera, and compute the drag and lift forces by trajectory analysis. Translational and angular velocities are modeled as harmonic functions with specific phase differences. In particular, periodic mass elevations near turning points are explained using the suggested models. At each turning point, a sudden drop in lift and a rapid increase in drag occur simultaneously due to fast increase in angle of attack. However, the lift is increased over the buoyancy-corrected weight of plate during gliding flight, resulting in periodic mass elevations near turning points. Superhydrophobicity is shown to increase lift but to reduce drag on a fluttering plate, resulting in the decrease of mean descent speed.

The shape of a conventional full spade rudder has been modified to implement the Coanda effect and consequential changes in the flow characteristics are carefully examined to show the significant enhancement in the lift performance. A preliminary numerical study has been done to identify the optimum configuration of the modified rudder sections. For the purpose, chord wise locations of the jet slit and the radii of the trailing edge were varied in several ways and the changes in the lift characteristics have been observed at the various angles of attack, particularly focusing on the usefulness of the Coanda effect upon delaying the stall or increase in the circulation. Making the most use of the results so attained, full spade rudder of a VLCC has been reformed to realize the Coanda effect. A series of model experiments and numerical simulations are performed to confirm the effectiveness of the Coanda effect in improving the performance of the modified rudder. It is found that considerable enhancement in the lift performance of the rudder is plausible at any rudder angle if an optimum jet momentum is provided.

In this paper, we experimentally investigated the effects of attached cylindrical tripwires on the aerodynamic performance. The research was carried out with a simple two-dimensional (2-D) rectangular airfoil fabricated from thin flat-plate aluminium, with elliptical leading and trailing edges. Tripwires of varying widths and thicknesses, and attack angles of $-5^{\circ}{\sim}20^{\circ}$ were used to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics (e.g. lift and drag forces) of the airfoil. We found that attaching the tripwires to the lower surface of the airfoil enhanced the lift force and increased the lift-to-drag ratio for low attack angles. However, attaching the tripwires to the upper surface tended to have the opposite effects. Moreover, we found that attaching the tripwires to the trailing edge had similar effects as a Gurney flap. The aerodynamic characteristics of the flat-plate airfoil with tripwires can be used to develop passive control devices for aircraft wings in order to increase their aerodynamic performance when gliding at low attack angles.
The electromagnetic suspension system, which is a kind of magnetic levitation, can be categorized into two groups; separate lift & guidance system and combined lift & guidance system. This paper deals with the latter system, in which lift and guidance forces are generated by a pair of staggered magnets with the inverted U- shaped rail. In this work, a rigid body bogie-truck and a twist response type of bogie-truck, which are constructed by two magnetic wheels consist of two staggered magnet pairs, are modeled, and curvature running characteristics of both types obtained by simulation are presented. Simulation result showed that curvature running characteristics of twist response type of bogie-truck is better than that of rigid body bogie-truck.
This paper describes the insulation characteristics of GIS by the free conducting particles under alternating voltage. The particles of the GIS can cause decrease in breakdown voltages. Various materials and sizes of free conducting particles were used to study the lift-off and fall-down characteristics. The measured lift-off voltage for copper particle agreed with the calculated one.

This paper is the third investigation on the evaluation methods of flow characteristics in a steady flow bench. In the previous works, several assumptions used in the steady flow bench were examined and the flow characteristics were estimated both by the conventional impulse swirl meter and a particle image velocimetry at 1.75B position. From these works, it was concluded that the assumption of the solid rotation might cause serious problems and both of the eccentricity and the velocity profile distort the flow characteristics when using the ISM at 1.75B plane. Therefore, the understanding of the detail velocity profiles is very important to keep discussing the issues about the steady flow evaluation method. For this purpose, the planar velocity profiles were measure at 1.75B position by particle image velocimetry and the characteristics were examined according to the valve angles and lifts. The results show that the planar velocity profiles of 11, 16, $21^{\circ}$ valve angle heads according to the lift are similar to each other, however, that of $26^{\circ}$ angle is an exceptional case in the all aspects. In addition, the swirl behaviors are not apparent up to 6~8 mm lift under the $21^{\circ}$ angle and somewhat arranged motions are observed over the whole plane near the highest lift. At this point, the narrower the angle, the lower the lift at which the swirl motions become clear. On the other hands, when the angle is $26^{\circ}$, the center of swirl is always farthest from the cylinder center and only the indistinct swirl is observed even if at the highest lift. Also, all the swirl centers are quite apart from the cylinder center so that the effect of eccentricity may not be negligible at 1.75B regardless the valve angle. Related to the tangential velocity along with the radial direction, the bands of the velocity distribution are very wide and the mean velocities of cylinder center basis are lower than the velocity which is assumed in the ISM evaluation. Lastly, the mean tangential velocity profiles of swirl center basis are sometimes higher than that of ISM-assumed up to 0.6 non-dimensional distance less than 6mm lift, however, as the lift increases the profiles are different according to the angles and profile $11^{\circ}$ is the most closed to the ideal profile. Consequently, the real velocity profile is far from the assumption of ISM evaluation.
The aerodynamic performance of the pantograph on a high speed train was compared for different pantograph covers which are designed to block the aero-acoustic noise from the pantograph. For the study, two types of cover are designed: wedge and cone types. The lift force of pantograph with cover was compared with the force of pantograph only. The comparison clarified that the cone type cover increases the sideslip angle of the flow and decreases the lift force considerably. However, the wedge type cover changes the flow direction upward and increases the lift force of the pan head. This increment of lift force compensates the decrement of lift force caused by the blocking of the flow into the pantograph lower frame due to cover. Therefore, in case of the wedge type cover, the overall lift force changes slightly compared with the cone type cover.

Combustion using oxygen enriched air is known as a technology which can increase flame stability as well as thermal efficiency due to improving the burning rate. Lift-off, blowout limit and flame length were examined as a function of jet velocity, coflow velocity and OEC(Oxygen Enriched Concentration). Blowout limit of the flame below OEC 25% decreased with increase of coflow velocity, but the limit above OEC 25% increased inversely. Lift-off height decreased with increase of OEC. In particular, lift-off hardly occurred in the condition above OEC 40%. Flame length of the flames above OEC 40% was increased until the blowout occurred. Great flame stability was obtained since lift-off and blowout limit significantly increased with increase of OEC.
Jet flows applied tangential to a foil surface near the leading and/or trailing edges increase the lift of the foil by delaying the separation also known as the Coanda effects. Many experimental and numerical studies have proven the effectiveness of Coanda effects on circulation control and the effects have been found to be useful in practical application in many aerodynamics fields. Most of the previous works have studied the effects of the jet blowing near the trailing edges and investigated the influence of jet momentum on lift. A few experimental studies, however, focused on the separation bubble that develops near the leading edge and applied jet flow the edge to remove the bubble but only to find decrease in lift. In the present paper, a Coanda foil of 20% thickness ellipse with modified rounded leading and trailing edges was investigated, and the flow around the foil was numerically studied. The blowing around the leading edge only decreased the lift, as the experiments showed, but the suction considerably increased the lift.
