  • Nervous necrosis virus (NNV) is a deadly infectious disease that affects several fish species. It has been found that the NNV utilizes grouper heat shock cognate protein 70 (GHSC70) to enter the host cell. Thus, blocking the virus entry by targeting the responsible protein can protect the fishes from disease. The main objective of the study was to evaluate the inhibitory potentiality of 70 compounds of Azadirachta indica (Neem plant) which has been reported to show potential antiviral activity against various pathogens, but activity against the NNV has not yet been reported. The binding affinity of 70 compounds was calculated against the GHSC70 with the docking and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation approaches. Both the docking and MD methods predict 4 (PubChem CID: 14492795, 10134, 5280863, and 11119228) inhibitory compounds that bind strongly with the GHSC70 protein with a binding affinity of -9.7, -9.5, -9.1, and -9.0 kcal/mol, respectively. Also, the ADMET (absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity) properties of the compounds confirmed the drug-likeness properties. As a result of the investigation, it may be inferred that Neem plant compounds may act as significant inhibitors of viral entry into the host cell. More in-vitro testing is needed to establish their effectiveness.

  • This study investigated spray patterns and coverage generated by three types of commercial nozzles for spraying pesticides with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) using a multi-copter. Flufenoxuron+metaflumizone SC and bifenthrin EC were sprayed. The falling particles of the spraying agent were measured using WSP (Water and oil Sensitive Paper) and the coverage was determined. The results showed that the uniformity of falling particles was different according to the difference in wind strength, and there was no difference for different formulations. The injection amount for each nozzle was found to be different from the official information provided by the manufacturers. These results could be used to establish guidelines for the control of UAVs and pesticide registration testing.

  • The need for non-destructive testing and evaluation of Korean traditional wooden buildings is increasing because of their widespread deterioration. Among all types of deterioration, termite damage in wooden columns is the most difficult to detect with the naked eye because it starts inside the wood, and the initial deterioration is small. X-ray computed tomography (CT) is the best technology to investigate the inner state of wood that has less damage, but applying it to wooden columns between walls is challenging. Therefore, the feasibility of tomosynthesis, which is a method to reconstruct a coronal section of a subject with a few X-ray projections from a limited angle of rotation, was studied as an alternative to CT. Pine (P. densiflora) with three artificial holes was prepared as a specimen to evaluate the quality of reconstructed tomosynthesis images according to the different number of projections. The quality of the tomosynthesis images in the in-focus plane was evaluated using the contrast-to-noise ratios, while a vertical resolution between the images was assessed by determining the artificial spread function. The quality of the tomosynthesis image in the in-focus plane increased as the number of projections increased and then remained constant as the number of projections reached 21 or over. In the case of vertical resolution, there was no significant difference when 21 projections or more were used to reconstruct the images. A distinct difference between coronal section images was found when the distance was more than 10 mm from one plane to another plane.

  • This study predicts the economic activity level of the elderly in Korea using various machine learning methods. While the previous studies mainly focused on testing the relationship between the economic activity level and the life satisfaction or the social security system, this study aims at the accurate prediction on the economic activity level of the elderly using various machine learning methods and the forecast combination. Dependent variables such as the activity rate, employment rate, etc and independent variables such as the income, average wage, etc compose the dataset in this study. Five different machine learning methods and two forecast combinations are applied to the given dataset. The prediction performances of the machine learning method and the forecast combination varied across the dependent variables and prediction intervals, but it was found that the forecast combination was relatively superior to other methods in terms of the stability of prediction. This study has significance in that it accurately predicted the economic activity level of the elderly and achieved the stability of the prediction, raising practicality from a policy perspective.

  • Caval syndrome is a severe complication of canine heartworm disease in which affected dogs present with various clinical signs that are often life-threatening. In cases of severe infection, adulticidal treatment has numerous complications as a result of a marked immune response against dead worms. Therefore, several surgical and non-surgical methods, including interventional extraction, have been applied in veterinary medicine. Despite the usefulness and efficiency of conventional retrieval devices, a few associated limitations must be addressed to reduce their risks and increase their applicability. Herein, we introduced a case of treating three dogs with caval syndrome by applying a newly developed heartworm basket device. The dogs were diagnosed with heartworm disease by heartworm antigen testing and direct smear. Imaging findings revealed remarkable remodeling of the right heart and pulmonary vessels and the presence of heartworms in the right heart. Additionally, heartworms were confirmed in the distal part of the abdominal aorta and femoral arteries in one dog, indicating aberrant systemic migration of the worms. Under general anesthesia, the heartworm basket device was introduced into the right heart via femoral venotomy and arteriotomy in one dog and jugular venotomy in the other two dogs. Although the number of cases in this study was small, the basket device was successful in gradual and cautious extraction of the heartworms in all three dogs. They exhibited good prognosis of clinical symptoms as indicated by imaging analyses.

  • This retrospective study aimed to investigate whether there was a difference in the success rate of removal of residual thyroid tissue in patients with the same cutoff serum thyroglobulin (Tg) value-measured 2 weeks after thyroid hormone withdrawal (THW)-for different radioactive iodine (RAI) activities. We identified 132 patients with papillary thyroid cancer who were treated with total thyroidectomy and RAI therapy to evaluate the efficacy of three radioactivities of I-131: 1,110, 3,700, and 5,550 MBq. Serum Tg testing was performed 1 week before RAI treatment and 2 weeks after THW (pre-Tg); the cutoff pre-Tg level was below 10 ng/mL. Stimulated Tg levels were measured on the day of I-131 administration (off-Tg). After 6 months of treatment, we compared the groups for complete ablation, defined as no uptake on a diagnostic I-131 scan, stimulated Tg level of <1.0 ng/mL, and Tg antibody level of <100 ng/mL. Ninety-five patients (72.0%) achieved complete ablation, with 57.1% (8/14), 78.2% (68/87), and 61.3% (19/31) in the 1,110 MBq, 3,700 MBq, and 5,550 MBq groups, respectively. There was no significant difference in the complete ablation rates between the three groups. In the multivariate analysis, the off-Tg level was a significant predictor of complete ablation. RAI therapy with low radioactivity (1,110 MBq) seemed sufficient for ablation in patients with papillary thyroid cancer with a pre-Tg level below 10 ng/mL. The off-Tg level is a promising and useful predictor of complete ablation after initial RAI therapy.

  • In this paper, make a study decision problem called an optimal release policies after testing a software system in development phase and transfer it to the user. When correcting or modifying the software, because of the possibility of introducing new faults when correcting or modifying the software, infinite failure non-homogeneous Poisson process models presented and propose an optimal release policies of the life distribution applied fixed shape parameter distribution which can capture the increasing/decreasing nature of the failure occurrence rate per fault. In this paper, discuss optimal software release policies which minimize a total average software cost of development and maintenance under the constraint of satisfying a software reliability requirement. In a numerical example, after trend test applied and estimated the parameters using maximum likelihood estimation of inter-failure time data, make out estimating software optimal release time

  • It should be supported by the ease and economic production in terms of appropriate technology to be widely used in the real applying fields. In particular, the diagnosis of diseases is one of the most difficult areas to apply to the developing countries compared to other fields because of the high costs of professional manpower, equipment, and medial reagents. In recent years, paper, which is one of the most common materials around, has been used to fabricate the disease diagnostic chips, particularly without any special facilities or the equipment. These new technologies lead the possibility of using point-of-care testing devices that can be manufactured quickly in the field by lowering the production cost. These paperbased technologies will contribute to solve many of the deadliest medical problems in developing countries and ultimately improve the quality of human life.
