Library statistics is used for internal decisions to know and assess library operations or for external justifications to show of how libraries meet users' needs and contribute to the organization. It is included same frameworks with social indicators and cultural indicators in national level. In this basis, national library statistics, they are ANSI/NISO Z39.7, Canada's Core library statistics, LIST of united Kingdom, are examined and Delphi method is used for new scheme of korean library statistics. As the results, it is suggested that new korean framework of library statistics is composed of 7 parts with 31 items. There are 6 parts with 21 items of social indicators or cultural indicators related to library items as well.

The purpose of this study is to analyze quantitatively the use of statistics, especially inferential statistics, in library and information science. Thus this study compared the use of statistics in library and information science with it in social work and education. The results of this study are as follows: First, the result is that, when the proportions of articles in each of the three categories of use are compared, library and information science is deficient in the use of inferential statistics and unusually productive of articles in 'No Statistics' category and 'Descriptive Statistics Only' category. Second, ANOVA showed no significant difference in the means for number of articles with no statistics and for articles with descriptive statistics only, but did show a statistically significant difference for the means for number of articles with inferential statistics. That is, the use of inferential statistics in library and information science was very less than the other subject areas. Third, a comparison of the numbers of various inferential statistics for each of the three subject areas indicated that the differences were not significant. This fact means that the quality of inferential statistics used in library and information science was similar to the other subjects.

Public library statistics can be a useful tool for measuring public library resources and services and also supporting management process including planning and policy development. This study attempts to present an advanced national public library statistics system to report accurate description of public library situation. Main user groups and useful areas of public library statistics were identified through literature review, and the emerging trends of public library statistics systems at the national and international levels were summarized. Current public library statistics system, annually collected and published by the Korean Library Association, was analyzed and ways for the improvement were suggested particularly in the aspects of validity, reliability, consistency, currency, and utility.

As a new practical model of Korean Library statistics, It suggests 6 parts, fifty-four items for 4 types of libraries. In comparison with last version, 'library use and users', 'electronic services' parts are increased which are occupied as more than hair of the whole statistical items. Budget parts are increased also. The new model which is developed based on the international standards like ISO2789 and NISO/ANSI Z39.7 is advised by professionals in the fields.

Using the data shown in the national library statistics system, we tried to identify the current situation from various angles and derive problems, and based on this, we tried to find a development plan. First, it is necessary to conduct a thorough survey to know the statistics of Special library. Second, some degree of unification of the names used in Special libraries should be achieved. Third, it is necessary to present the subject classification for Special libraries. Fourth, it is necessary to actively promote and incentive Special libraries to participate in statistical surveys. Fifth, it is necessary to solve the problem that Special libraries are classified into other statistics. Sixth, statistics of national and large Special libraries such as the Court Library, Constitutional Court Library, and Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information cannot be found anywhere. Unless these problems are solved, the overall evaluation of Special libraries and policy proposals at the national level will be meaningless.

The purpose of this study is put emphasis on the importance of the library statistics. e. g., more than ten related current library statistics were inaccurated each other, so whole of statistic figures is not to be trusted. This research is make an attempt to more accurate information about library situations. Especially, with special reference to basic library statistics in the [Bulletin of National & College University libraries](Vol. 1-14, 1983-96, published by Council on National College & University Libraries), take the 24 major factors to compare and evaluate with 46 national and public university libraries. Analyzing 24 factors including 5 subjects. These subjects are as follows: 1) Total numbers of staffs with faculty members and students enrollment 2) Whole library collection of monographs and serial and publishcations. 3) Annual university budgets and library material expenditures. 4) Library facilities and building square measure. 5) Library service situation with circulation, inter-library loan/borrow and monograph D/B build up.

Statistics items required by National Library Statistics System are based on data for library evaluation and policy making of library management from a theoretical standpoint. However, It is realized there are differences between Statistics items required by National Library Statistics System and those can be collected at the field of public libraries. In accordance with this point, this paper contained an analysis of a working diary log of public libraries as a basic material able to collect data at the field of public libraries and also surveyed the present usage situation of Library Management Program able to automatically collect data to recognize that National Library Statistics is reliably or validly objective data. An analysis data of this research will be a basic material to plan the standard guide of a working diary log of public libraries from now on.

This Study analyzed the use of statistics in 1,768 research articles published in 2001-2004 in 4 korean & 6 English core journals in the field of library and information science. Korean journals made significantly less use of descriptive and inferential statistics. Of the 663 inferential statistics used in 345 of the 1768 articles, the most frequently used inferential technique was multivariate analysis. There was significant difference in inferential methods used in Korean & English journals, also in traditional library science journals and information science journals.

There is a close relationship between indicators of statistics and performance measurement in international standards, working sections and the data items similarity in academic libraries. However, this co-relationship between statistics and measuring performance in the Korean academic library is not related to each other in terms of designing or usage. In order to prove this, the co-relationship between indicators of statistics and performance measurement has been researched based on applications of international standards and data. The international result shows 45% of overlapping in statistical and measuring performance indicators. However, there is only 14 to 26% of the co-relationship in existing statistics and performance measurement in Korea. A considerable improvement of the co-relationship between the indicators has newly been found. Therefore, in developing online system of academic library statistics, it is essential to provideinclusive information between indications of statistics and performance measurements.
