  • Transaction logs capture the interactions between online information retrieval systems and the users. Given the nature of the Web and Web users, transaction logs appear to be a reasonable and relevant method to collect and investigate information searching behaviors from a large number of Web users. Based on a series of research studies that analyzed Naver transaction logs, this study examines how transaction log analysis can be applied and contributed to the field of web searching and suggests future implications for the web searching field. It is expected that this study could contribute to the development and implementation of more effective Web search systems and services.

  • The KERIS Union Catalog is the largest bibliographic database in Korea. It has over 5.7 million bibliographic records and at present 330 university libraries are participating in shared cataloging services. The database, however, includes various errors and a large number of duplicate data because separate databases from many university libraries were merged without proper quality control in a short period. This study intends to find error data types by analyzing dissertation bibliographic data. The results show that error data are mainly caused by input errors, and the mistakes in using MARC formats and cataloging rules.

  • Most web portals provide a web directory service which selects and classifies web sites according to their subject matter. In order to investigate the directory access behavior of general Korean web users, this study analyzes directory access logs of NAVER, a major Korean web search engine. This study suggests a methodology to classify the total sessions into six different session types. This study also discusses directory access behaviors of the NAVER users by examining the distribution of sessions according to session types, the lengths of navigation within a session, and the most frequently visited categories. It is expected that this study could contribute to the development of more effective web directory services.

  • Agents in Multi-Agent System; (MAS) should make use of a common Agent Communication Language (ACL) in order to negotiate with others, and conform to negotiation protocols thatare designed to reach agreements. Therefore, agents must have suitable architectures that could cover above requirements. In this paper, we define an instructive ACL and compare it with other ACLs such as Foundation for Intelligent Physical Agents (FIPA) ACL and Knowledge Query Manipulation Language(KQML), In particular, we represent agents as logic programs with knowledge base and negotiation library. Finally, we show how the planner, which is in the negotiation library, provides the plan of actions and updates agent's knowledge base.

  • The purpose of the study is to design and propose metadata standard for building AI training dataset of landmark images. In order to achieve the purpose, we first examined and analyzed the state of art of the types of image retrieval systems and their indexing methods, comprehensively. We then investigated open training dataset and machine learning tools for image object recognition. Sequentially, we selected metadata elements optimized for the AI training dataset of landmark images and defined the input data for each element. We then concluded the study with implications and suggestions for the development of application services using the results of the study.

  • Historically, mothers have been noted as active health information seekers, reflecting their roles as health mangers and caregivers for their family members. However, previous studies have focused on health-related information behavior among mothers in native populations or mothers of children with specific diagnoses. To fill this research gap, this study focused on health information behavior among mothers of healthy infants and toddlers. Using Wilson's (1997) information-seeking model, this study aimed to uncover the relationships between mothers' demographic characteristics and their health information source use. Online surveys were completed by 851 mothers: 255 U.S.-born mothers, 296 Korean-born mothers, and 300 Korean immigrant mothers living in the United States. Results indicated that there were statistically significant relationships between mothers' nine demographic characteristics (mother's age, education level, household income, employment status, the number of children, years living in the U.S. (or Korea), fluency in speaking English, size of household, housing status) and their health information source use. Based on the results, the implications for information professionals at diverse organizations are discussed when they provide health information services to this specific population.
