  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of user interface that affect the searching behavior of OPAC users. and then to propose how to design user-friendly interfaces of OPACS. An experiment was conducted on two systems with different interfaces to grasp the effect of user interface to search process and search outcome. A $2\times2$ cross-over design was used for the experiment. Sixty five searchers participated in the experiment. Several statistical techniques such as carry-over effect and system effect of a $2\times2$ cross-over design, $\chi^2$ test, t- test, McNemar test, test of marginal homogeneity through maximum likelihood method, factor analysis, regression analysis, and analysis of variance were applied according to the hypotheses tested and the data analyzed.

This study is designed to achieve the purpose by gathering and analysing data related to the use of Internet of librarians those who work in public libraries and research and development libraries and university libraries. The major conclusions made in this study is summarized as follows. (1) From this survey, received detailed response from 69 librarians, the majority (42) from research and development libraries. The majority (56) were from Library and Information Science subject area, half of them (37) hold advanced degrees. (2) Majority (40) have accessed Internet for one year or less, 9(17%) respondents for two years, 17(32%) spend every day Internet related activity. (3) 44.9% of the respondents taught themselves. 28.9% learned informally from a colleague. Formal training from a single one-hour class to more structured learning was available to 30.4%. (4) The most common reason respondents use the Internet are to access remote database searching(73.9%), to communicate with colleagues and friends and electronic mail(52.2%), to transfer files and data exchange(36.2%), to know the current research front(23.2%). They search OPACs for a variety of traditional task-related reasons(59.4%) and to see what other libraries are doing with their automated systems(31.9%). (5) Respondents for the most part use the functions : WWW (68. 1%), E-Mail(59.4%), FTP(52.2%), Gopher(34.8%), Wais(7.2%). (6) Respondents mentioned the following advantages : access to remote log-in database, an excellent and swift communications vehicle, reduced telecommunication cost, saving time. (7) Respondents mentioned the following disadvantages : low speed of communication, difficult of access to the relevant information and library materials, and shortage of database be distributed within Korea.

  • Information users depend more and more on portal sites for Internet navigation. These circumstances are reflected in academic information market especially. As the path of contacting public knowledge information, many institutions of information creation and services are collaborating with portal sites. At this point in time, it is necessary to consider linking libraries services with portal sites. Especially university libraries which have been recognized as private facilities of each university must to be considered as public facilities of local community. So it is desirable to develop method for linking university library services with portal sites for revitalizing university library services. This paper presents methods linking library OPACs with portal sites, through surveying oversea's cases and situation of domestic portal sites.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation between users' preferences of Personality types and their attitude towards patterns of Web OPAC use mainly focus on their search behaviour and their preferences for the interface. Data res collected through the MBTI test and self-designed online questionnaire. The original MBTI personality types were re-coded into 4 categories of preferences of personality types, that is, E(Extraversion), I(Introversion), S(Sensing), N(iNtuition), T(Thinking)-F(Feeling), and J(Judging)-P(Perception) and then analysed their correlation with patterns of Web OPAC use by Person's correlation coefficient (r) in SPSS Windows Ver. 11.0. It is noteworthy that 9 out of 28 factors of Web OPAC search behaviour and preferences for interfaces show statistically significant correlation with users' MBTI preferences of personality types.

  • This study intends to implement a OPAC prototype for digital kids. To the end, this study applies prototyping techniques that design, evaluate and improve an early sample model. Included in this study are as follows: (1) design a conceptual model of new OPACs based on the information need analysis of digital kids, (2) implement a OPAC prototype with WordPress 4.2 version, (3) evaluate the prototype OPAC from the viewpoint of digital kids and children librarians, and finally, (4) suggest the improved model and implementational strategies for kid's OPAC. 6 fourth and fifth graders in the elementary school and 5 children librarians in public libraries participate in the final evaluation process.

  • This research was conducted to analyze the actual condition of data related to Korea shown in the catalog of 15 countries. This study was to compare the subject characteristics of Korea-related subject heading, record collection, and the characteristics of several subject heading, which has been a major issue. The results are as follows. To begin with, Korea-related record in most other national libraries runs absolutely short except for some countries like United States. Korea-related record is generally 2 to 3 times less than Japan related record. Second, referring to the subject distribution in sub criteria of Korea-related record, subject related to 'history' and 'economy' is shown in the highest rate. Considering that 'Korean war' shows the highest rate in Italy and Canada, we can consider that this may cause the distortion of the perception of Korea. Third, in the case of Korea-related record, the record of South Korea is 1.5 to 5 times more than that of North Korea, except for some countries like United States. Forth, regarding the subject headings, the terms such as 'Taekwondo', 'Kimchi', 'Tok-do', 'Tong-hae' have different meanings in different countries. However, these terms agree to LCSH in most countries except for neighboring countries. Fifth, in case of China and Japan, the subject headings in reference to political and historical position are raising some problems.
