  • Objectives : Translations of Korean Medical Classical texts were analyzed quantitatively to verify their trend. Based on findings, accumulated problems and their solutions were discussed. Methods : A list of translated Classical texts in the field of Korean Medicine from the National Central Library collection was organized. Afterwards, the publication date, field, author information and content of the translated version were analyzed. Results : Of Chinese Medical texts, those from the Ming and Qing periods were most translated, while major texts pre-dating the Song period were left out. In addition, while texts in the fields of Shanghan-Jingui, comprehensive medical texts, scriptures, medical theories that were high in demand in educational and clinical sectors were actively translated, those in secondary fields were insufficiently translated. Of medical texts of Korea, those from the Joseon period were mostly translated, including major texts such as the Donguibogam and various kinds of texts reflecting research demands. Conclusions : In the future, texts that have not been translated need to be prioritized while basic elements need to be identified for better quality translation. To enable quantitative and qualitative expansion of Korean Medical Classical Texts translation, institutional and academic support is crucial.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of in vitro studies regarding the effectiveness of reciprocating and rotary instrumentation on microbial reduction in root canals. Materials and Methods: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and the gray literature were searched through December 2019. Studies comparing the influence of reciprocating and rotary instrumentation on the removal of microorganisms from root canals that quantified the antimicrobial effect were included. Data extraction was completed using a systematic form for data collection. The risk of bias of the studies was evaluated. Standardized mean differences (SMDs) and confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using a random effects meta-analysis. Results: Seventeen in vitro studies were included in this systematic review, of which 7 provided adequate data for inclusion in the meta-analysis. Both reciprocating and rotary systems were similarly effective in reducing the microbial load in infected root canals (SMD [95% CI], 0.0481 [-0.271, 0.367]). Three studies showed a low risk of bias, whereas most of the studies (82%) presented a medium risk. Conclusions: Although both techniques decrease the microbial content (with reductions of 23.32%-88.47% and 23.33%-89.86% for reciprocating and rotary instrumentation, respectively), they are not able to provide complete disinfection of root canals.

  • The purpose of this study is to make a contribution to the effective management of medical literature in Korean libraries and specifically to help to select medical books and periodicals by determining the value and life of medical literature by means of citation counting and analysis. This report will present methods of calculation and data collection to measure the importance, half life of medical literature and the authority of author for Korean medical libraries. The writer conducted comparative studies based on data covering a two-year period, 1970-1971, using about 16,899 citations in 1,032 articles of the above journals. The references and citations are counted and analyzed by the number of authors, periodicals. books and publication dates. By the following ratio. calculated by the citation counting and analysis, we can decide the rates of medical periodicals to books, foreign literature to domestic literature and literature of the most numerously cited. authors, for the selecting method of Korean Medical libraries. (1) It is disclosed that 61 main authors are cited 9 times. Most of them are Western authors, they are cited 14,374 times which represents 88.6 % of the total citations. (2) The cited medical literature is classified as follows: The ratio of cited medical periodicals to the cited medical books is 82.0%. (The books at a rate of 18.0%.) Therefore, the wnter concentrated the efforts on the analysis of periodicals. (3) Classification of the periodicals by countries indicates that about 11.2% of total citations are made from Korean medical literature. The medical activities in Korea are dependent on the advanced foreign countries at ratio of 88.8%. Of the foreign medical periodicals cited, Japanese literature represents only 4.5% while literature of European countries and America constitutes 84.3%. (4) If medical journals are arranged in order of decreasing productivity of articles on a given subject, they may be revealed that it is necessary to have 98 titles of key journals to cover 60% of information in the field of medical science and 60 titles for an average of 50%. (5) For the purpose of measuring the life of medical literature in Korea, the writer has calculated the half lives of periodicals and books as follows: Kinds of Literature 1. Periodicals 2. Books 3. Whole literature Half-lives 7.75 years 4.11 years 6.37 years (6) The half lives of domestic and Japanese literature in the medical science are comparatively short.

  • Due to the growth of people's use of the Internet as well as interests in health, people's needs of health information have rapidly increased in public libraries. Nevertheless, there are few studies in Korea about users' needs for health information and services that public libraries can offer to support these user groups. In the current study, a comprehensive literature review was conducted in order to understand the role of public libraries and librarians in serving users with health information and to identify the types of consumer health information(CHI) services available to users in public libraries. As for the CHI services that public libraries can offer for users, the current study emphasizes and discusses the directions and guidelines for improving the following six approaches: 1) CHI collection and information resource building, 2) CHI reference services, 3) CHI user education and training program development, 4) CHI services for minority/disability/cultural diversity groups of users, 5) CHI outreach program development, and 6) CHI network development with medical libraries, academic libraries, hospital, and medical institutions and associations. Although most of the discussion in the current study centers on cases and services provided in the United States or other countries, findings would be used to inform the importance of CHI services in public libraries, and to design and develop CHI services in Korea.

  • Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) are played by millions of people around the world. Within MMORPGs, players explore, solve mysteries, craft items, battle against dungeon or raid bosses, or compete against other players, all while using a variety of information and information behaviors. Role-players in MMORPGs develop identities and engage in interactive storytelling with other role-players as their characters. An ethnographic approach combining overt participant observation and engagement, semi-structured interviews, and artifact collection was used to explore and describe the social information behaviors of role-players through the lens of the theory of information worlds. The social types evident in the role-playing community in WildStar, a science fantasy-themed MMORPG, are closely interrelated to and differentiated by social norms and information values that dictate acceptable characters, stories, character actions, and appropriate lore sources as well as how to role-play without violating the boundary between in- and out-of-character information worlds. Role-players maintained the in-character and out-of-character boundary using a set of specific information behaviors to enable engaging and immersive role-playing experiences. Implications of the findings for the theory of information worlds as well as potential applications of role-playing and MMORPGs are also discussed.

  • This study analyzed the Beopmaru, Supreme Court Library of Korea, circulation data to identify user lending patterns and proposed a plan to reflect the analysis results in future user services. In 2022, Beopmaru's collection of books was 212,608, with law books accounting for 73%. However, general books accounted for 83% of actual circulation. Looking at the usage coefficient by topic, the literature field was the most actively used at 5.85, and the law field was the least used at 0.23. In the case of interlibrary loan, both KERIS member institutions and the Korean Bar Association had the highest loan ratios in the legal field, civil law field, and judicial litigation procedure field, in that order. However, member institutions affiliated with KERIS, a legal academic community, were lending law books on a wider range of subject areas than the Korean Bar Association, a practical organization. To improve access to legal information, the Beopmaru public service was implemented, but in reality, the use of reading space was high, and the proportion of general books loaned was much higher. In order to improve this, it seems necessary to strengthen the promotion of Beopmaru loan services, provide personalized services, improve book lending regulations, strengthen online services, and establish a cooperative network.

  • This study analyzed the legal deposit, acquisition, and donation status from 2020 to 2022, along with the deposit status of e-publications with issued ISBNs. Through this analysis, the study derived improvement measures to strengthen compliance with legal deposit obligations for domestic e-publications. The key findings are as follows: The collection methods were acquisition (57.07%), legal deposit (41.74%), and donation (1.19%). The file formats varied, including e-books (pdf, epub), webtoons (jpg), and audiobooks (mp3). Most e-publications collected were published from 2012 to 2022, with some from 1960 to 2011. Webtoons dominated acquired materials, while legal deposits mainly comprised e-books. Analyzing the status of e-publications with issued ISBNs, e-books (96.2%) were most common, with the literature field receiving the highest number of ISBNs. Most ISBNs were issued during 2020 to 2022. Looking at the top 10 publishers, the low legal deposit rate indicates the need for improvement. To address this, proposed improvement measures include enhancing publishers' awareness of legal deposits, strengthening incentives and sanctions, encouraging voluntary participation through transparent disclosure of the legal deposit status, and improving the accuracy of data in the ISBN issuance and deposit system.
