'The Library and Information Science' originated from the 'Library Science'. A school of academic reputation of the West is calling nm of studies by the name of 'Library, Archives, and Information Science' and studying materials, knowledge and information of the library, archives, and information centers. I think that many of the researcher neglect basic studies of the library and information science. Therefore, I'd like to call attention to the fact.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the research trend of information user studies. The following findings are made. The literature on information user studies during 1980-1990 reveals 120 titles. The faculty members of university tend to publish their results in scientific journals and university publication while non-faculty members are more likely to represent their research papers in unpublished master thesis and bulletin. Subject distribution of research were classified into ten: user studies, material use studies, information needs and uses, user education, library use pattern, citation analysis, journal use, catalog use, information system, non-use study. Survey research, literature research, survey reserch and literature research use jointly, experimental research and citation analysis were employed for information user studies.

The purpose of this paper is to introduce current trends of library and information science in UK universities, based on their history, developments, curriculum changes and new information market. Since 1980 there were fundamental changes, both in departmental structure and recruitment. The impact of the evolving information markets has meant an introduction of new way of thinking and new methods into the traditional subjects of librarianship and information studies. The review on this topic has found trends in library and information studies departments as follows. - Name changed : many of the changes have been made for pragmatic and financial reasons with professional development. - Restructuring and reorganisation : there were a general move away from a traditional small subject-based departments to broadly based information studies structures. - Mergers with other academic departments: department of library and information studies tended to be put with other technology-based subjects. - Emphasis on information technology based teaching and learning.

By taking a bottom-up "library in the life of the user" perspective rather than a top-down "user in the life of the library" perspective, this paper uses anecdotal evidence from the past and near present to examine the multiple roles the U.S. public library plays and has played as public space in the everyday lives of its patrons. By harnessing "public sphere" theory discussed in Jurgen Habermas's THE STRUCTURAL TRANSFORMATION OF THE PUBLIC SPHERE (1989) and by the examining the rich literatures on civic life and institutions that have evolved from it, the author argues that Library and Information Studies discourse has to expand its scope to include research and analysis of "library as place" from a user's perspective if it hopes to develop a deeper understanding of what the public library does for means to members of the communities in which they reside.

The proliferation of digital libraries (DL) in the twenty-first century has revolutionized the way information is generated and disseminated. This has led to various practical and research models of DLs. This paper discusses the concept and development of digital libraries, and examines various components and characteristics of DLs. It further identifies various models and theories of digital libraries with a special focus on the DELOS Reference Model and 5S Theory. The relationship between the two focused frameworks is analyzed for better understanding of their application in the DL universe.

The purpose of this study is to develop the education programs for the archival librarian in Korea. The importance of archival work requires that archivists should receive an archival education at university. But there is no professional education programs in Korea. The interdisciplinary character of archival studies programs make it possible to place them in a variety of setting, such as a department of library and information science, department of history. Currently, archival education must assume a much more prominent role within the library and information science. Library and information science educators, increasingly concerned with their own survival, seek rational ways to diversify their area. They are looking at mergers with allied fields. Archival education programs will find a welcome home in a number of existing department of library and information science. Archival education programs could be provided according to three categories undergraduate coursework, master of archival studies, and continuing education programs. The body of knowledge that a student should master as part of an archival education program is classified here as basic knowledge of archival studies, specified knowledge of archives and records, practical knowledge of archives and records management, and complementary and contextual knowledge of archival studies.

The purpose of this study is to describe the trends and contents of literature in green library and to suggest the research direction on green library. Earlier studies focus on the green library architecture and necessity, after then green library management studies have proliferated. Green library architecture studies have emphasized on 'energy and atmosphere' and 'indoor environmental quality' based upon 5 categories of LEED evaluation system. Green library management studies have focused on library resources recycling and utilizing energy through effective management of library collection. Based on the analysis of literature, five research directions are suggested, such as the number of libraries in an area, library shelf position and space, library space program, collection ratio for library storage, and user studies.

This paper focuses on issues in the convergence of library and information science and communication studies. Common research topics in both fields include scholarly communication, knowledge gaps, invisible colleges, diffusion of innovations, human interaction with communication technologies, information-seeking behavior, information theory, and the information society. To consider these two disciplines in this broader context, this paper compares these two discipline's paradigms, suggests four models of convergence, and traces bibliometric studies performed. This study may be of use to those studying scholarly communication or bibliometrics, to faculty constructing curricula in either of the disciplines, to communication and information science scholars seeking new areas of research, and to collection development librarians in drawing the boundaries of these disciplines.

Use studies of library collections have been conducted as a method of evaluating collections in a library. The main purpose of use studies is to evaluate the quality of a library collection in terms of extent and mode of its use. In addition to use studies, both quantitative and qualitative methods could be utilized in order to evaluate a library collection. However, the quantitative and qualitative collection evaluation methods are more concerned with the collection itself than with its use. Use studies have been conducted in large academic libraries for the following specific purposes: 1) They attempt to identify little used portion of collections that can be retired less accessible and less expensive storage area. 2) They try to identify core collections to satisfy some degree of circulation demands in the near future. 3) They try to identify use patterns of selected subject areas or type of books that can be used to adjusting collection development practices or fund allocations. 4) They try to assess the document delivery capability of a library to improve their availability. A number of methodologies employed for these specific purposes fall into four major categories; 1) circulation analysis method, 2) last circulation method, 3) relative use method, and 4) document delivery test. Each method is briefly reviewed with its limitations.

The effectiveness of the library operation with the least volume is to bring the same amount of utility as the library operating with the largest volume. The major objectives of this study are to evaluate the library collection of Library and Information Division, Korea Rural Economic Institute, the sample library, by the fields and areas of research, and to prepare an alternative for future library collection of KREI. In order to accomplish these objectives, use studies, relative use method, list-checking, and questionaries were used for the analysis.
