Soil Respiration Rates in Cryptomeria japonica D. Don, Chamaecyparis obtusa Endl., and Quercus glauca Thunb. Stands (삼나무, 편백, 종가시나무 임분의 토양호흡에 관한 연구)

  • The quantification of soil respiration rates is important to understand carbon cycles of forest ecosystems. Soil respiration rates were assessed using Li-8100A soil flux system in one evergreen broadleaved (Quercus glauca Thunb.) and two coniferous (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don and Chamaecyparis obtusa Endl.) stands from May 2020 to April 2022 in southern Korea. Monthly variations of soil respiration rates were higher in the Q. glauca stand than in the C. japonica and the C. obtusa stands. The mean soil respiration rates were significantly higher in the Q. glauca stand (2.63µmol m-2 s-1) than in the C. japonica (0.93µmol m-2 s-1) and C. obtusa (0.99µmol m-2 s-1) stands. The three stands showed exponential relationships between soil respiration rates and soil temperature (R2 = 0.44-0.80). The sensitivity of temperature (Q10 values) to soil respiration rates was highest in the Q. glauca stand (5.13), followed by the C. obtusa (3.10) and C. japonica (2.58) stands. These results indicate that soil respiration rates can be increased more in evergreen broadleaved stands than in coniferous stands under enhanced soil temperature.

  • An image-reconstruction technology, involving the deployment of an unmanned mobility equipped with high-speed LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) has been proposed to reconstruct the shape of abandoned mine. Unmanned mobility operation is remarkably useful in abandoned mines fraught with operational difficulties including, but not limited to, obstacles, sludge, underwater and narrow tunnel with the diameter of 1.5 m or more. For cases of real abandoned mines, quadruped robots, quadcopter drones and underwater drones are respectively deployed on land, air, and water-filled sites. In addition to the advantage of scanning the abandoned mines with 2D solid-state lidar sensors, rotation of radiation at an inclination angle offers an increased efficiency for simultaneous reconstruction of mineshaft shapes and detecting obstacles. Sensor and robot posture were used for computing rotation matrices that helped compute geographical coordinates of the solid-state lidar data. Next, the quadruped robot scanned the actual site to reconstruct tunnel shape. Lastly, the optimal elements necessary to increase utility in actual fields were found and proposed.

PM2.5 in poultry houses synergizes with Pseudomonas aeruginosa to aggravate lung inflammation in mice through the NF-κB pathway

  • Background: High concentrations of particulate matter less than 2.5 ㎛ in diameter (PM2.5) in poultry houses is an important cause of respiratory disease in animals and humans. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that can induce severe respiratory disease in animals under stress or with abnormal immune functions. When excessively high concentrations of PM2.5 in poultry houses damage the respiratory system and impair host immunity, secondary infections with P. aeruginosa can occur and produce a more intense inflammatory response, resulting in more severe lung injury. Objectives: In this study, we focused on the synergistic induction of inflammatory injury in the respiratory system and the related molecular mechanisms induced by PM2.5 and P. aeruginosa in poultry houses. Methods: High-throughput 16S rDNA sequence analysis was used for characterizing the bacterial diversity and relative abundance of the PM2.5 samples, and the effects of PM2.5 and P. aeruginosa stimulation on inflammation were detected by in vitro and in vivo. Results: Sequencing results indicated that the PM2.5 in poultry houses contained a high abundance of potentially pathogenic genera, such as Pseudomonas (2.94%). The lung tissues of mice had more significant pathological damage when co-stimulated by PM2.5 and P. aeruginosa, and it can increase the expression levels of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor-α through nuclear factor (NF)-κB pathway in vivo and in vitro. Conclusions: The results confirmed that poultry house PM2.5 in combination with P. aeruginosa could aggravate the inflammatory response and cause more severe respiratory system injuries through a process closely related to the activation of the NF-κB pathway.

Mineralogy and Chemical Composition of the Residual Soils (Hwangto) from South Korea (우리 나라 황토(풍화토)의 구성광물 및 화학성분)

  • The mineralogy and chemical composition of reddish to brownish yellow residual soils, so called "Hwangto" have been examined according to representative host rocks. The result of the study indicates that Hwangto consists of 40-80% clay minerals and various minerals such as quartz, feldspar, hornblende, goethite, and gibbsite. Clay minerals include kaolinite, halloysite, illite, hydroxy interlayered vermiculite (HIV), mica/vermiculite interstratifield mineral and chlorite. The mineralogical constituents and contents of Hwangto were different depending on the types of host rocks. Moreover, the Jurassic granitic rocks contain relatively more kaolin minerals, whereas the Cretaceous granitic rocks contain more HIV and illite. In addition, reddish Hwangto contains relatively more kaolinite and HIV, and yellowish Hwangto contains more illite and halloysite. It is suggested that feldspars and micas of host rocks were chemically weathered into illite, halloysite, illite/vermiculite interstratified minerals, and HIV, and finally into kaolinite. Compared with their host rocks, the major chemical compositions of Hwangto tend to contain more $Al_2O_3,\;Fe_2O_3,\;H_2O$ in amount and less Ca, Mg, and Na. Hwangto contains relatively high amount of trace elements, P, S, Zr, Sr, Ba, Rb, and Ce including considerable amount of Li, V, Cr, Zn, Co, Ni, Cu, Y, Nb, La, Nd, Pb, Th in excess of 10 ppm. Relatively high amount of most trace elements were detected in the Hwangto. The major and minor chemical compositions of the Hwangto were different depending on the types of host rocks. However, their difference was in the similar range compared with the compositions of host rocks.

The Comparison on Treatment Method of Liquid Radioactive Waste in Yonggwang #3&4 and #5&6 (영광 3&4와 5&6호기에서 액체 방사성폐기물 처리방법의 비교)

  • Most of the low-level liquid radioactive wastes generated from PWR plants are classified into high or low total suspended solid(HTDS or LTDS), and into radiochemical and radioactive laundry waste. Although the evaporation process has a high decontami- nation ability, it has several problems such as corrosion, foam, and congestion. A new liquid waste disposal process using the ion-exchange demineralizer(IED), instead of the current evaporation process, has been introduced into the Yonggwang NPP #5 and 6. These two methods have been compared to understand the differences in this study. Aspects compared here were the released radioactivity amount of the liquid radioactive wastes, the dose of off-site residents, the decontamination factor, and the amount of the solid radioactive wastes. The IED system is designed to discharge higher radioactivity about 20% than the evaporating system, and the actual radioactivity released from the evaporating and IED system were 0.473mCi and 1.098mCi, respectively. The radioactivity released from the IED was 2.32 times higher than that of the evaporating system. The dose of off-site residents was $2.97{\times}10^{-6}$mSv for the evaporating system, and $6.47{\times}10^{-6}$mSv for IED. The decontamination factor(DF) of the evaporator is, in most cases, far lower than the lower limits of detection(LLD) with the Ge-Li detector. Due to the low concentration of the liquid wastes collected from the liquid waste system, the decontamination factor of IED is very low. Since there is not enough data on the amount of solid radioactive wastes generated by the evaporation system, the comparison on these two systems has been conducted on the basis of the design, and the comparison result was that the evaporating system generated more wastes about 40% than IED.

Effect of the Length of Side Group Substitution on Optical and Electroluminescene Properties

  • Blue emitting materials, 9,10-bis-biphenyl-4-yl-anthracene (AC-P), 9,10-bis-[1,1';4',1"]terphenyl-4-yl-anthracene (AC-DP), and 9,10-bis[3",5"-deiphenyltriphenyl-4'-yl]anthracene (AC-TP) were synthesized through boration and Suzuki aryl-aryl coupling reaction. EL performance of blue light-emitters was optimized and improved by varying the chemical structures of the side groups. In the thin film state, the three materials exhibit $PL_{max}$ values in the range of 442-456 nm. EL device with the synthesized compounds in the following configuration was fabricated: ITO/4,4',4"-tris(N-(2-naphthyl)-N-phenylamino)triphenylamine (2-TNATA) 60nm/N,N'-bis (naphthalene-1-yl)-N,N'-bis(phenyl)benzidine (NPB) 15nm/synthesized blue emitting materials (30nm)/1,3,5-tri(1-phenyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)phenyl (TPBi) 20nm/LiF 1nm/Al 200nm. The current efficiency and C.I.E. value of AC-TP were 3.87 cd/A and (0.15, 0.12). A bulky and non-planar side group helps to prevent ${\pi}-{\pi}^*$ stacking interaction, which should lead to the formation of more reliable amorphous film. This is expected to have a positive effect on the high efficiency of the operating OLED device.

Changes of Saponin Contents of Leaves, Stems and Flower-buds of Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer by Harvesting Days (인삼 지상부의 채취시기에 따른 사포닌조성 비교)

  • The parts of leaves, flowers and stems in ginseng were obtained for analyzing the component of saponin on 15th April, 25th April, 5th May, 25th May, which were considered as ginseng foliation stage. The total saponin content of the leaves were 97.29, 66.42, 67.61, 36.24 mg/g, respectively, in which the content of Re, $Rb_1$ and Rd were more than 2/3 amount of total saponin. Especially, the saponin content of leaves decreased according to the sequential collection days, in which the similar results were observed from the flowers and stems of ginseng. The total saponin content of the flowers and stems were 141.09,143.84,139.25,133.47 and 13.32, 9.85, 8.00, 4.65 mg/g, respectively. Among them, the content of Re, Rd and $Rb_2$ in flowers were more than 2/3 while the content of Re, $Rg_1$ and Rd in stems showed more than 9/10 amount of total saponin. The total saponin content of individual leaf were 19.46, 28.56, 58.82 and 169.24 mg/plant, 2.53, 2.76, 5.20 and 12.32 mg/plant in stems, and 14.11, 30.21, 37.60 and 73.41 mg/plant in flowers. Therefore, the total saponin content of aboveground parts in ginseng were leaves > flowers > stems.

Multiple Ovulations and In vitro Fertilization in the Domestic Fowl (Gallus domesticus)

  • The aim of this study was to obtain mature ova or embryos at a single cell stage, which can be used in avian transgenesis and nuclear transfer through multiple ovulations, in vitro fertilization and culture. Chicken anterior pituitary extract (CAPE) or acetone-dried chicken anterior pituitary extract (ACAPE) was used to induce multiple ovulations in hens pretreated with pregnant mare' serum gonadotrophin (PMSG). In vitro fertilization of the multiple ovulated ova was performed by inseminating sperm onto the germinal disks in m-Ringer' solution and incubating the ova at 41$^{\circ}C$, 5% $CO_2$ for 10 h in DME-F12 medium containing 20% liquid albumen. The in vitro fertilization process was observed using an environmental scanning electron microscope. When normal laying hens (white Leghorn) were administered daily with PMSG (100 IU), egg laying ceased in most hens within 3 to 8 days. Ovulation began to occur about 7.5 h after injection of CAPE and ACAPE. The number of ovulated ova was 1.00${\pm}$0.00, 2.33${\pm}$0.52 and 2.20${\pm}$0.45, respectively, after receiving 100, 200 and 300 mg CAPE. The number of ovulated ova was 2.00${\pm}$0.00, 2.86${\pm}$0.69 and 3.00${\pm}$1.22, respectively, after receiving 10, 15 and 20 mg ACAPE. The fertilized and cultured ova were able to develop into embryos up to the 32 cell stage. The present experiments demonstrated that multiple ovulations can be induced by CAPE and ACAPE successfully, and the ova resulted from the treatment retained the capability for further fertilization and embryonic development. These data provide new information to support the establishment of an in vitro culture system for future avian transgenesis studies.

PAPR Reduction Using Hybrid Schemes for Satellite Communication System

  • In the future, satellite communication systems, such as ISDB in Japan and DVB in Europe, are required to support higher transmission date rate for providing multimedia services including HDTV, high rate data communication etc. Considering the effectiveness of OFDM technique in efficient usage of frequency bandwidth and its robustness to the multi-path fading, several OFDM based standards have been proposed for satellite communication. However, the problem of high Peak to Average Power Ratio is one of the main obstacles for the implementation of OFDM based system. Many PAPR reduction schemes have been proposed for OFDM systems. Among these, the partial transmit sequences (PTS) is attractive as they obtain better PAPR property by modifying OFDM signals without distortion. In this paper, considering the complexity issue, we present a simplified minimum maximum (minimax) criterion and Sub-Optimal PTS algorithm to optimize the phase factor. This algorithm can be dynamically made tradeoff`f between performance and complexity on demand. In addition, we integrate guided scrambling (GS) with this method. Simulation in multiple antenna based OFDM system proves that the proposed Hybrid schemes can get much more PAPR reduction and do not require transmission of side information (SI). Thus it is helpful when implementing OFDM technique in satellite communication system.

Safety and Efficacy of a Mouth-Rinse with Granulocyte Colony Stimulating Factor in Patients with Chemotherapy-Induced Oral Mucositis

  • Objective: To assess the safety and effectiveness of a mouth-rinse with G-CSF (JiSaiXin, produced by NCPC Biotechnology Co., Ltd) in treating patients with chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis (CIM). Method: A consecutive cohort of patients with advanced cancers and CIM were treated with mouth-rinse G-CSF. All chemotherapy for patients with advanced cancers was adopted from regimens suggested by NCCN guidelines. The mouth-rinse with G-CSF at a dose of 150-300ug plus 100ml-500ml normal saline was started from the time of oral mucositis was confirmed and continuously used for at least 7 days as one course. After at least two courses of treatment, safety and efficacy were evaluated. Results: There were 7 female and 7 male patients with advanced cancer and CIM recruited into this study, including 5 with colorectal, 2 with lung, 1 patient with gastric, 1 with cervical and 1 with pancreatic cancer, as well as 2 patients with diffuse large B cell lymphomas, 1 with nasopharyngeal and 1 with gastric cancer. The median age was 57 (41-79) years. Grade 1 to 2 myelosuppression was observed in 3/14 patients, and Grade 4 myelosuppression in 1/14. Adverse effects on the gastrointestinal tract were documented in 5/14 patients, and were Grade 1 to Grade 3. No treatment related death was documented. Regarding CIM, the median response time to mouth rinse of G-CSF was 2 (1-5) days, and all patients with CIM demonstrated a positive response. Conclusions: Mouth-rinse with G-CSF proved to be safe and effective in treating patients with advanced cancers and CIM. However, further randomized controlled studies should be conducted to clarify the effectiveness of this treatment with other lesions.
