  • Reversible solid oxide fuel cell (ReSOC) system was integrated with waste steam for electrical energy storage in distributed energy storage application. Waste steam was utilized as external heat in SOEC mode for higher hydrogen production efficiency. Three system configurations were analyzed to evaluate techno-economic performance. The first system is a simple configuration to minimize the cost of balance of plant. The second system is the more complicated configuration with heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). The third system is featured with HRSG and fuel recirculation by blower. Lumped models were used for system performance analyses. The ReSOC stack was characterized by applying area specific resistance value at fixed operating pressure and temperature. In economical assessment, the levelized costs of energy storage (LCOS) were calculated for three system configurations based on capital investment. The system lifetime was assumed 20 years with ReSOC stack replaced every 5 years, inflation rate of 2%, and capacity factor of 80%. The results showed that the exergy round-trip efficiency of system 1, 2, 3 were 47.9%, 48.8%, and 52.8% respectively. The high round-trip efficiency of third system compared to others is attributed to the remarkable reduction in steam requirement and hydrogen compression power owning to fuel recirculation. The result from economic calculation showed that the LCOS values of system 1, 2, 3 were 3.46 ¢/kWh, 3.43 ¢/kWh, and 3.14 ¢/kWh, respectively. Even though the systems 2 and 3 have expensive HRSG, they showed higher round-trip efficiencies and significant reduction in boiler and hydrogen compressor cost.

  • This study analyzed the optimal electricity cost of a 100% renewable energy source (RES) based system. Especially energy storage system (EES) and supplementary biopower system as well as photovoltaic (PV) and wind power component were included in the proposed RES-based system to overcome the intermittence of RESs and to efficiently balance energy supply and demand. To comparatively analyze the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of different RES-based systems, six scenarios were developed according to the involved RESs: PV, wind, PV/wind, PV/biopower, wind/biopower, and PV/wind/biopower systems. We then applied the proposed systems to build a 100% RES-based system in Jeju Island, Korea. As a result, the single component based system, PV and wind power system of 0.18 and 0.28 $/kWh, respectively, cannot compete with the economics of existing electricity grid. However, the optimal LCOE of the hybrid system where PV and wind power are used as main supply options and biopower as supplementary option was identified to be 0.08 $/kWh, which can compete with the economics of an existing electricity grid.

  • An attempt is made to analyze the unit nuclear power cost of the Go-ri units 1 and 2 in terms of a set of model data. For the calculational purpose, the power cost is first decomposed into the cost components related to the plant capital, operation and maintenance, working capital requirements, and fuel cycle operation. Then, POWERCO-50 computer code is applied to enumerate the first three components and MITCOST-II is used to evaluate the fuel cycle cost component. The specific numerical results are the fuel cycle cost of Go-ri unit 2 for three alternative fuel cycles presumed, levelized unit power cost of units 1 and 2, and the sensitivity of the power cost to the fluctuation of the model data. Upon comparision of the results with the power cost of the fossil power plants in Korea, it is found that the nuclear power is economically preferred to the fossil power. Nevertheless, the turnkey contract value of Go-ri unit 2 appears to be rather expensive compared with the available data on the construction cost of the PWR plants. Therefore, it is suggested that, in order to make the nuclear power plants more attractive in Korea, the unfavorable contract of such kind must be avoided in the future introduction of the nuclear power plant. Capacity factor is of prime importance to achieving the economic generation of the nuclear electricity from the Go-ri plant. Therefore, it is concluded that more efforts should be directed to make the maximum use of the Go-ri plant.

  • Owing to the development of semiconductor processing technology, high density complex circuits can be integrated in a System-on-Chip (SoC). However, increasing energy consumption becomes one of the most important limiting factors. Power estimation at the early stage of design is essential, since design changes at lower levels may significantly lengthen the design period and increase the cost. In this paper, logic level circuits ire levelized and several levels are selected to build power model tables for efficient power estimation. The proposed techniques are applied to a set of ISCAS'85 benchmark circuits to illustrate their effectiveness. Experimental results show that significant improvement in estimation accuracy and slight improvement in efficiency are achieved when compared to those of a well-known existing method. The average estimation error has been reduced from $9.49\%\;to\;3.84\%$.

  • In this paper, an economic feasibility study of wind-diesel hybrid power systems for an island in the Yellow Sea, where the maximum power generation is about 500kW, was performed. For the study, annual electric load variation and wind resource data of the island were collected and analyzed. HOMER program - a typical hybrid optimization model for electric renewables including wind resource, developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory - was used. Wind speed and diesel price were picked out as variables for the sensitivity analysis in order to find the economic accountability for the wind-diesel hybrid power system. As the result, even though it is not feasible economically under the present condition, if mean wind speed is over 3 m/sec. or diesel price goes up to 2.4 $ per liter, the wind-diesel hybrid power system for the island becomes a prospective candidate.
