  • The anticancer and apoptotic effect of chloroform extract from 24 month-fermented doenjang were investigated in AGS human gastric adenocarcinoma cells. The chloroform extract of 24 month-fermented doenjang inhibited the AGS gastric cancer cell growth in a dose-dependent manner. It has been confirmed by observing the cell distribution under inverted microscope. Approximately, 48 hour treatment of $100\;{\mu}g/mL$ doenjang extract inhibited AGS cancer cell growth by $76.7\%$, respectively. The growth inhibition may be caused by apoptosis of AGS cancer cells after 48 hour treatment of 24 month-fermented doenjang extract. It has been demonstrated by cell cycle arrest that revealed the shift from $G_2+M\;to\;G_0+G_1$ phase and the formation of apoptotic bodies. The fermentation period playa critical role in cell cycle arrest, in which 24 month-fermented doenjang extract was more effective than 12 month-fermented doenjang extract. The treatment of 24 month-fermented doenjang extract for 48 hours has induced intercellular Bax and decreased Bcl-2 level, indicating that it may regulate the expression level of Bax/Bcl-2 proteins. Thus, 24 month-fermented doenjang extract seems to have anticancer effect via cancer cell growth inhibition induced by apoptosis process.

  • We have investigated an Au intercalated monolayer graphene on Ni(111) using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), high resolution photoemission spectroscopy (HRPES), and low energy electron diffraction (LEED) at the 3A2 ARUPS beamline in Pohang Accelerator Laboratory. We find the monolayer graphene is well grown on the Ni(111) surface by the adsorption of acetylene. However, the graphene does not show the characteristic $\pi$ band near the Fermi level due to its strong interaction with the underlying substrate. When Au is adsorbed on the surface and then annealed at high temperature, we observe that Au is intercalated underneath the monolayer graphene. The process of the Au intercalation was monitored by HRPES of corresponding Au 4f and C 1s core levels as well as the electronic structure of the $\sigma$, $\pi$ states at $\Gamma$, K points. The $\sigma$, $\pi$ bands of graphene shift towards the Fermi level and the $\pi$ band is clearly observed at K point after the intercalation of full monolayer Au. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the C 1s peak narrows to approximately 0.42 eV after intercalation. These results imply that the interaction between the graphene and substrate is considerably weakened after the Au intercalation. We will discuss the graphene is really closer to ideal free standing graphene suggested recently.

  • Objectives: This study examines exposure to hazardous substances in the working environment caused by exposure to toxic substances produced in the aluminum die casting process in the automobile manufacturing industry. Materials and Methods: The exposure concentration levels, detection rates and time-trend of 15 hazardous factors in the aluminum die casting process over 10 years(from 2006 to 2016) were used as a database. Results: The study found that hazardous factors in the aluminum die casting process were mostly metals. The rate for detected samples was 70.6%(405 samples), and that for not detected samples was 29.4%. The noise for an eight-hour work shift showed a 49.7% exceedance rate for TLV-TWA. Average noise exposure was 89.0 dB. The maximum exposure level was 105.1 dB. Conclusion: The high numbers of no-detection rates for hazardous substance exposure shows that there is no need to do a work environment measurement. Therefore, alternatives are necessary for improving the efficiency and reliability of the work environment measurement. Moreover, to prevent noise damage, reducing noise sources from automation, shielding, or sound absorbents are necessary.

  • The aeroacoustic characteristics and noise reduction method of a centrifugal fan for a bagless vacuum cleaner were studied. The major noise source of vacuum cleaner is the centrifugal fan. The impeller of the fan rotates over 30000 rpm and generates very high-level piercing noise. It was found that the dominant noise source of the fan is generated from the aerodynamic interaction between the highly rotating impeller and stationary diffuser. In order to reduce the high tonal sound generated from the aerodynamic interaction between the impeller and diffuser, tapered impeller was carefully designed and tested. The trailing edge of the tapered impeller was inclined and this reduces the flow interactions between the rotating impeller and the stationary diffuser because of some phase shift. The static efficiency of the new impeller is slightly lower than the conventional one. The overall SPL is reduced about 3.6 dBA. The SPL of blade passing frequency(BPF) is reduced about 6 dBA and the $2^{nd}$ BPF is reduced about 20 dBA. The vacuum cleaner with the tapered impeller has lower noise level than that of the previous impeller and the strong tonal sound was dramatically reduced.

  • Despite the impressive economic growth over the past several decades, Korea's distribution sector has remained quite underdeveloped. Until recently, management of the marketing channels also has been staying at an unsophisticated level. The Korean marketing channel system is largely characterized by 1) undifferentiated channel types among the competing manufacturers, 2) dominance by the manufacturers over the other channel members, 3) high level of conflicts among the channel members, 4) inefficient marketing information system, and 5) lack of managers properly trained in channel operation and management. Currently, major change factors emerged and has begun to directly affect the Korean marketing channel system. The most salient changes surrounding the Korean marketing channel system are 1) complete opening of the marketing channels for the foreigners, 2) emergence and spread of new types of channels 3) adoption of advanced information technology by the various channel members, 4) increase in flexibility in production and supply systems, 5) shift of power toward the retailers away from the manufacturers, 6) growing trend for cooperation and alliance among the traditional marketing institutions. To these changes the manufacturers have been reacting, rather than proacting, mostly using defensive measures. The proactive measures that are recommended on behalf of the manufacturers include 1) installation of the strategic channel management system, 2) development of the skills for efficient interorganization management, 3) investing in efficient system for marketing information and logistics management, 4) more efficient management of brands, and 5) maintenance of price-competitiveness.

  • The optimum design of structures with frequency constraints is of great importance in the aeronautical industry. In order to avoid severe vibration, it is necessary to shift the fundamental frequency of the structure away from the frequency range of the dynamic loading. This paper develops a novel topology optimisation method for optimising the fundamental frequencies of structures. The finite element dynamic eigenvalue problem is solved to derive the sensitivity function used for the optimisation criteria. An alternative material interpolation scheme is developed and applied to the optimisation problem. A novel level-set criteria and updating routine for the weighting factors is presented to determine the optimal topology. The optimisation algorithm is applied to a simple two-dimensional plane stress plate to verify the method. Optimisation for maximising a chosen frequency and maximising the gap between two frequencies are presented. This has the application of stiffness maximisation and flutter suppression. The results of the optimisation algorithm are compared with the state of the art in frequency topology optimisation. Test cases have shown that the algorithm produces similar topologies to the state of the art, verifying that the novel technique is suitable for frequency optimisation.

  • Background: This study aimed to determine and define the elements of an Fatigue Risk Management System (FRMS) diagnostic tool to assist an organization in systematically assessing its level of implementation of an FRMS. Methods: A modified Delphi process was used involving 16 participants with expertise in sleep science, chronobiology, and fatigue risk management within occupational settings. The study was undertaken in two stages 1) review of elements and definitions; 2) review of statements for each element. Each stage involved an iterative process, and a consensus rule of ≥ 60% was applied to arrive at a final list of elements, definitions, and statements. Results: Stage 1: a review of elements (n = 12) and definitions resulted in a final list of 14 elements and definitions with a consensus of ≥ 60% achieved after 2 Delphi rounds. Stage 2: a review of statements (n = 131) resulted in a final list of 119 statements with a consensus of ≥ 60% achieved after 2 Delphi rounds. Conclusion: The final FRMS diagnostic tool will enable an organization to systematically assess the level of implementation of their current FRMS and identify gaps and opportunities to reduce risk.

  • The world's most extensive and active deltas, Louisiana's wetlands, are deteriorating rapidly due to multiple stressors such as the discharge of the Mississippi River, sea-level rise, and coastal retreat, the substantial but spatially and temporally variable impacts. However, the ecological and anthropogenic histories, the mode of environmental changes on a multi-millennial timescale have not been thoroughly documented. This study, a palynology-based multiproxy analysis, investigates hydrological, geological, geochemical, and anthropogenic impacts on southern Louisiana wetlands and a variety of external forcing agents influencing ecological succession. Sediment cores extracted from a small pond on a mangrove-dominate island near Port Fourchon, Louisiana, USA yielded a 4,000-year record. The site has been transformed from freshwater to saline water environments, to a mangrove dominant island over the late Holocene. The multivariate principal component analysis identified the relative strength of external drivers responsible for each ecological shift. The Mississippi River delta cycle (lobe switching) was the dominant driver of ecosystem changes during the late Holocene, while relative sea-level rise, tropical cyclones, climate, and anthropogenic effects have been the main drivers late in the site's history.

  • Using a trade policy, government can shift profits from foreign firms to domestic firms. This paper will reexamine how asymmetric information can affect the equivalence of tariff and quota in a duopoly, where one domestic firm competes with one foreign firm. It can happen that the domestic firm has informational advantage against the government. Within this framework, the domestic firm has private information about own marginal cost as well as the foreign firm's. The domestic firm would exploit the advantage to draw a favorable policy from the government. When the government is misled, social welfare would decline. This paper will guide how the government can extract information from the domestic firm by offering a menu of tariff or quota. Previous studies showed that quota demands information more than tariff. With the principle of revealed information, the domestic firm chooses tariff (quota) if the marginal cost of foreign firm is low (high). The quota level will be high (low) if the marginal cost of domestic firm is high (low). To prevent misrepresentation, the domestic firm should be charged when quota is implemented. When the quota level is low, the domestic firm is charged additionally. This paper can contribute to the literature of trade policy and information.
