A simplified design approach for modelling shear force demand on tower walls supported on a transfer structure in regions of lower seismicity

  • Buildings featuring a transfer structure can be commonly found in metropolitan cities situated in regions of lower seismicity. A transfer structure can be in the form of a rigid plate or an array of deep girders positioned at the podium level of the building to support the tower structure of the building. The anomalous increase in the shear force demand on the tower walls above the podium is a major cause for concern. Design guidance on how to quantify these adverse effects is not available. In this paper a simplified method for quantifying the increase in the shear force demand on the tower walls is presented. In view of the very limited ductile nature of this type of construction the analysis presented herein is based on linear elastic behaviour.

  • Experimental studies are investigated for RC column retrofitting under cyclic load. Design considerations are jacketing of steel plate of carbon fiber with epoxy bonding, use of unbonded plate, additional concrete grouting, ratio of additional longitudinal steel reinforcement and longitudinal configuration of additional ties. Investigated results are 1) jacketing and additional reinforcements are effective for strengthening, 2) use of additional grouting is less effective with respect to increased section. Future studies are needed to evaluate the requirements about additional reinforcements for member stress level, 3) bond between original and additional grout concrete.

GNSS를 이용한 전리층 기울기 추정 방법 비교 (Comparison of Ionospheric Spatial Gradient Estimation Methods using GNSS)

  • The high ionospheric spatial gradient during ionospheric storm is the most concern when applying GNSS(Global Navigation Satellite System) augmentation systems for aircraft precision approach. Since the ionospheric gradient level depends on geographical location as well as the storm, understanding the ionospheric gradient statistics over a specific regional area is necessary for operating the augmentation systems. This paper compares three ionosphere gradient computation methods, direct differentiation between two receivers' ionospheric delay signal for a common satellite, derivation from a grid ionosphere map, and derivation from a plate ionosphere map. The plate map method provides a good indication on the gradient variation behavior over a regional area with limited number of GNSS receivers. The residual analysis for the ionosphere storm detection is discussed as well.

  • 본 논문에서는 AHRS(Attitude and Heading Reference System) 센서를 이용하여 스튜어트 플랫폼으로 구성된 평면의 평형상태를 유지시키는 시스템을 소개한다. 움직이는 선박이나 차량에서 구조물이 지면의 기울기에 상관없이 항상 평형상태를 유지하도록 하기 위하여 자세 제어를 하는 역학적 기기로 스튜어트 플랫폼을 사용하였다. 그리고 현재의 기울어진 각도를 알아내고 보정하기 위하여 AHRS 센서를 이용하였다. AHRS센서와 스튜어트 플랫폼 제어 간의 피드백 시스템을 구성하여 자동으로 스튜어트 플랫폼의 위쪽 판넬이 평형을 이루는 시스템을 제작하였다.

A Robust Resistive Fingerprint Sensor

  • A novel sensing scheme using resistive characteristics of the finger is proposed. ESD problem is more harmful than a capacitive fingerprint sensor in a resistive fingerprint sensor, because the sensor plate is directly connected to the sensing cell. The proposed circuit is more robust than conventional circuit for ESD. The sensor plate and sensing cell are isolated by capacitor. The pixel level simple detection circuit is fully digital operation unlike that of the capacitive sensing cell. The sensor circuit blocks are designed and simulated in a standard CMOS $0.35{\mu}m$ process. The proposed circuit is more stable and effective than a typical circuit.

탁아기관의 급식개선을 위한 식단의 운용시험 (Evaluation of Implemented Computer Generated Menus for the Improvement of Food Service Operation in Child-Care Centers)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate implemented computer generated menus for foodservice in child-care centers. Computer generated menus, which were developed in the previous study, were based on the children's preferences and the bugets of the centers. Computer generated menus were implemented for food service in each national/public, foundation established, and employer-supported child care centers in Seoul, respectively. Plate wastes, preferences, and nutrient intakes of their meals of the existing menus were compared with those of computer-generated menus. The nutrient contents from their nutritional analysis of meals of the computer generated and existing menus satisfied the recommended dietary level (RDfU3). However, at the eaten of computer-generated menus satisfied RDA/3, and the existing menus lacked energy, Ca, Vit Bl, Vit B2 and Vit C. The meals served by computer-generated menus reduced the plate wastes and increased the acceptability of the children in day care centers.

  • Number plates of vehicles operating in real world are sometimes difficult to recognize due to the number plate degradation (bent or dirty plates). To recognize the vehicle number from a number plate with severe degradation, good segmentation is necessary, which in turn requires good thresholding. This paper proposes a binarization method that combines the fast processing speed of global thresholding methods with the local thresholding methods' ability to adapt to lacal gray level characteristics. The proposed method overcomes the degradation of number plates quickly and maintains the widths of digit strokes uniform. The paper presents results of comparison with existing global and local thresholding methods.

Hole-Tone의 발생과 원형제트의 불안정 특성 (Instability Characteristics of Circular Jets Producing Hole-Tones)

  • Generation of hole-tones and the instability of circular impinging jets are investigated based on the frequency characteristics and the radiated sound field. The experiment is carried out with varying hole sizes, jet speeds and impinging distances. It is found that hole-tones occur by both the low-speed laminar jet and the high-speed turbulent jet, but not by the transient jet, while plate-tones without holes are produced only in the high-speed turbulent impinging jet. When the diameter ratio of the hole to the nozzle is nearly one, hole-tones occur most easily. At low speed, it is found that hole-tones are due to the symmetrical unstable jet and the impinging distance decreases with jet speed. And the Strouhal number and the sound pressure level increase with jet speed. At high speed, hole-tones show the same characteristics as plate-tones. It is found that the ratio of the convection speed varies with the Strouhal number and the jet speed.

  • Form the application of long rail system the non-ballast steel plate bridges, fatigue strength increase and rail noise reduction can be expected. This is mainly form the reduction of the rail impact at the rail joint locations which already made to behave together from welds. In the high speed rail, application of long rail system is essential because without long rail system, the required serviceability level can not be achieved. But even with this long rail systems, the thermal expansion from the girder can not be absorbed in the normal bearing systems, and these expansion cause between girder and rail. Also unexpected rail buckling and fracture through rail thermal tension may happen. It was found through numerical analysis and field measurement that these problems can be avoided by semi-fixed bearing system. In this study, the benefits of non-ballast plate bridge through long rail system, especially at the point of girder stability, girder stiffness increase and bearing maintenance will be reviewed.

한국산 활엽수재 도관벽의 수식구조에 관한 연구 (Micromorphological Structures of the Vessel Wall Sculptures in Korean Hardwoods)

  • Micromorphology of the vessel wall sculptures such as perforation plate, inter-vessel pits, vessel-ray pits, vessel-parenchyma pits, vestured pits, spiral thickening, and warts was observed in 78 species(45 genera, 25 families) of Korean hardwoods using a scanning electron microscopy. The SEM observation revealed the micromorphology of vessel wall sculptures which have not yet been described, and have confirmed findings already established at the light microscopical level.
