  • A levee is defined as an man-made structure protecting the areas from temporary flooding. This paper suggests a methodology for establishing the levee GIS database using the airborne topographic LiDAR(Light Detection and Ranging) data taken in the Nakdong river basins and the WAMIS(WAter Management Information System) information. First, the National Levee Database(NLD) established by the USACE(United States Army Corps Engineers) and the levee information tables established by the WAMIS are compared and analyzed. For extracting the levee information from the LiDAR data, the DSM(Digital Surface Model) is generated from the LiDAR point clouds by using the interpolation method. Then, the slope map is generated by calculating the maximum rates of elevation difference between each pixel of the DSM and its neighboring pixels. The slope classification method is employed to extract the levee component polygons such as the levee crown polygons and the levee slope polygons from the slope map. Then, the levee information database is established by integrating the attributes extracted from the identified levee crown and slope polygons with the information provided by the WAMIS. Finally, this paper discusses the advantages and limitations of the levee GIS database established by only using the LiDAR data and suggests a future work for improving the quality of the database.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the databases of pollutant sources and water quality measurement data by utilizing GIS, and making the user interface for the management of pollutant sources. Yeongsan Estuarine Lake was formed of a huge levee of 4.35 km constructed by an agricultural reclamation project. Water quality of the reservoir has been degraded gradually, which mainly attributes to increase of point and non-point source pollutant loads from the lake's watershed of 33,374.3 $\textrm{km}^2$ into it. Application of GIS to establishment of the database was researched of pint source such as domestic sewage, industrial wastewater, farm wastes, and fishery wastes, and non-pont source such as residence, rice and upland field, and forest runoffs of the watershed of the lake. NT Acr/Info and ArcView were mainly utilized for the database formation. Land use of the watershed using LANDSAT image data was analyzed for non-point source pollutant load estimation. Pollutant loads from the watershed into the reservoir were calculated using the GIS database and BOD, TN, TP load units of point and non-point sources. Total BOD, TN, TP loads into it reached approximately to 141, 715, 2,094 and 4,743 kg/day respectively. The loads can be used as input parameters for water quality predicting model of it. A user-friendly interface program was developed using Dialog Designer and Avenue Script of AcrView, which can perform spatial analysis of point and non-point sources, calculate pollutant inputs from the sources, update attribute data of them, delete and add point sources, identify locations and volumes of water treatment facilities, and examine water quality data of water sampling points.

  • An inundation analysis was performed on Hwapocheon, one of the tributaries of Nakdong River, which was inundated by heavy rain in August, 2002 with overtopping and levee break. The results of the developed model, 2D diffusion wave inundation analysis model, was compared with inundation trace map as well as inundation depth in terms of time and maximum inundated area calculated from FLUMEN model for the assessment of model applicability. The results from the developed model showed high fitness of 88.61% in comparison with observed data. Also maximum inundated area and spatial distribution of inundation zone were also found to be consistent with the results of FLUMEN model. Therefore, inundation zone and maximum inundation area calculated over a period of time by adopting 2D diffusion wave inundation analysis model can be used as a database for identifying high risk areas of inundation and establishing flood damage reduction measures.

  • Kon - Ha Thanh River basin is the largest and the most important river basin in Binh Dinh, a province in the South Central Coast of Vietnam. In the lower rivers, frequent flooding and inundation caused by heavy rains, upstream flood and or uncontrolled flood released from upstream reservoirs, are very serious, causing damage to agriculture, socio-economic activity, human livelihood, property and lives. The damage is expected to increase in the future as a result of climate change. An advanced flood warning system could provide achievable non-structural measures for reducing such damages. In this study, we applied a modelling system which intergrates a 1-D river flow model and a 2-D surface flow model for simulating hydrodynamic flows in the river system and floodplain inundation. In the model, exchange of flows between the river and surface floodplain is calculated through established links, which determine the overflow from river nodes to surface grids or vice versa. These occur due to overtopping or failure of the levee when water height surpasses levee height. A GIS based comprehensive raster database of different spatial data layers was prepared and used in the model that incorporated detailed information about urban terrain features like embankments, roads, bridges, culverts, etc. in the simulation. The model calibration and validation were made using observed data in some gauging stations and flood extents in the floodplain. This research serves as an example how advanced modelling combined with GIS data can be used to support the development of efficient strategies for flood emergency and evacuation but also for designing flood mitigation measures.
