During 9 months (March-November, 1989), observation of Leucocytozoon infection rate to blood and parenchymatous viscera (spleen, liver, heart) in Pusan, Gyeongnam (Kimhae, Yangsan) districts slaughtered chicken and the results obtained were as follow : 1. Among the blood smear sample of 213 heads of the chicken, 43 heads (20.2%) were infected with Leucocytozoon 2nd stage gametocyte and 4 heads (1.9%) were mixed infected with Leucocytozoon 5th stage gametocyte. 2. In histopathological detection of schizont in tissues section of spleen, liver and heart, there were 16.7% in spleen, 5.6％ in liver and 9.1％ in heart, mean detection rate were 10.6%. Spleen had the highest detection rate of schizont. 3. In seasonal-related Infection rate, summer was higher than spring.

Avian haemosporidia, including malarial parasites, are geologically and biologically widespread. The protozoal pathogen has been a subject of intensive research in the past, which has resulted in major medical progress. Haemosporidia infection in avian species in South Korea has been studied in wild birds and layer flocks, but not in pet birds. At the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Chungbuk National University, 75 birds that presented for health check-up were tested to evaluate the infection rate of Haemoproteus, Plasmodium and Leucocytozoon in birds without clinical symptoms. Haemoproteus spp. and Leucocytozoon spp. were simultaneously detected in a Major Mitchell's cockatoo (Lophochroa leadbeateri) by polymerase chain reaction, representing 1.33% of the tested birds. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that the infective Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon strains were similar to those detected in foreign countries rather than those detected in the wild birds of Korea. Although the infection rate may not be indicative of a substantial infection in healthy pet parrots, the import of infected birds can pose a threat by allowing foreign pathogens to infect the local wild flocks or livestock. This is the first surveillance study of avian haemosporidia in pet parrots in South Korea.

This investigation was performed to study of chickens naturally infected with leucocytozoon. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. The characteristic macroscopical changes observed were hemorrhages and elevated greyish white spots on the oviduct, the liver, the pancreas, the kidney and the pectoral muscles. 2. Microscopically, megaloschizonts were located in groups in the elevated greyish white spots. Hemorrhage and degenerative necrotic changes were observed around the megaloschizonts.

1992-1993년 호남지방의 4개 양계장에서 처음으로 닭의 Leucocytozoon caulleryi 자연감염증을 보이는 87수를 검색하였는데, 임상증세와 혈액내 merozoite 및 gametocyte 검출 그리고 내장기관으로부터 schizont의 발견으로 본 질병을 확증할 수 있었다. 본 감염증은 일년 중 6월 하순부터 9월 중순까지에 발견되었으며, 자연감염된 혈액(merozoite포함)을 미감염된 닭에 접종하여 인공감염상을 볼 수 있었다. 자연감염후 회복된 닭중 1수는 12월에 간에서, 또 다른 1수는 다음해 2월에 심장 근육에서 schizont가 발견되어 본 감염증의 재발이나 동절기를 지나는 장기간 감염 가능성을 보여 주었다. 본 원충의 gametocyte 추출물에서 특이 항원 항체 반응을 보이는 polypeptide는 50.1kD이었다.
