  • In this paper, a hybrid MIMO antenna for the mobile communication metal phone with auxiliary letter slot is designed and implemented. Auxiliary letter slot locates on the rear metal cover of the phone, and operates on LTE class 40 band. The slots of two letters are designed and operated with monopole+IFA hybrid antenna. Antenna satisfies under VSWR 3: 1 for LTE class 13 / LTE class 14 / CDMA / GSM / DCS / PCS / W-CDMA / LTE class 40 bands. Average gains and antenna efficiencies measured by the anechoic chamber were -5.57~-1.45 dBi and 27.75~71.6 %, respectively.

  • In this letter, a novel hybrid planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) with a T-shaped slot on the ground plane is proposed. The loop structure formed by the feed line and shorting pin can be operated as a series and shunt inductance for the PIFA and the T-shaped slot antenna, respectively. The PIFA operates at a frequency of 1.75 GHz, while the T-shaped slot on the ground plane operates at 2.4 GHz by the same voltage feeding source. The height of the PIFA is 6.5 mm, and the size of an upper patch is designed to be 30 mm${\times}$16 mm. The measured relative impedance bandwidth of the PIFA and the T-shaped slot are about 12% and 21%, respectively. In addition, good antenna performance was achieved.

  • In this letter, a modified 802.11-based opportunistic spectrum access is proposed for single-channel cognitive radio networks where primary users operate on a slot-by-slot basis. In our opportunistic spectrum access, control frames are used to reduce the slot-boundary impact and achieve channel reservation to improve throughput of secondary users. An absorbing Markov chain model is used to analyze the throughput of secondary users. Simulation results show that the analysis accurately predicts the saturation throughput.

  • A novel and compact elliptic-function bandpass filter is proposed in this letter. The techniques of slot etching and the addition of open stubs are applied to enhance the self-inductance and self-capacitance of hexagonal open-loop resonators. Thus, size reduction and improved transmission performance are obtained. Compared to the performance of the conventional design, the central frequency and insertion loss are reduced by 28% and 3.1 dB, respectively. Measurements show that the proposed filter has a fraction bandwidth of 23% at the central frequency of 1.84 GHz, and its insertion loss in the passband is less than -1.5 dB. The bandpass filter occupies only 12 mm${\times}$21.2 mm (approximately $0.24{\lambda}_g{\times}0.14{\lambda}_g$).

  • For an antenna-in-package (AiP), via holes are used to connect the antenna ground and system ground. In this letter, a dual-frequency AiP with a U-slot embedded in the patch is proposed. By properly arranging three via holes under the non-radiating edge, an AiP with two resonant frequencies is realized. Then a U-slot is embedded in the patch to further improve the bandwidth of the AiP. To validate the proposed design, an AiP with the bandwidth of 4.49% at 2.45 GHz and 6.02% at 5.32 GHz is achieved and fabricated. The measured results agree with the simulated results.

  • This letter presents a novel compact circularly polarized patch antenna for Global Positioning System/Global Navigation Satellite System (GPS/GLONASS) applications. The proposed antenna is composed of a simple square radiating patch fed by a capacitive dual-feeder to increase the impedance bandwidth and a lumped element hybrid coupler to achieve the broadband characteristic of the axial ratio (AR). The realized antenna dimensions are $28mm{\times}28mm{\times}4mm$, which is the most compact size among the dual-band GPS/GLONASS antennas reported to date. The measured results demonstrate that the proposed antenna has a gain of 2.5 dBi to 4.2 dBi and an AR of 0.41 dB to 1.51 dB over the GPS/GLONASS L1 band (1.575 GHz to 1.61 GHz).

  • This letter presents the design for a low-profile planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) that can be stuck to metallic objects to create a passive radio frequency identification (RFID) tag in the UHF band. The designed PIFA, which uses a dielectric substrate for the antenna, consists of a U-slot patch for size reduction, several shorting pins, and a coplanar waveguide feeding structure to easily integrate with an RFID chip. The impedance bandwidth and maximum gain of the tag antenna are about 0.3% at 914 MHz for a voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) of less than 2 and 3.6 dBi, respectively. The maximum read range is about 4.5 m as long as the tag antenna is on a metallic object.

  • In this letter, we propose a novel tag antenna that has low performance degradation with nearby dielectric material. We obtained a stable reading performance and a broad matching bandwidth on nearby dielectric materials by employing a T-matching network with thick line width and capacitively slot-loaded arms. We then built the proposed antenna and measured the tag sensitivity to examine the reading characteristics with nearby dielectric materials. The measured results clearly demonstrate stable tag sensitivity with various nearby dielectric materials, such as foam, acrylic-plastic, glass, and ceramic plates. To more closely observe the antenna characteristics with nearby dielectric materials, we also examined the impedance variation and surface current distribution with respect to the dielectric constant of nearby target objects, which ranged from $1{\times}{\varepsilon}_0$ to $16{\times}{\varepsilon}_0$.

  • This letter presents a K-band polarization reconfigurable antenna integrated with a silicon radio frequency MEMS switch into the form of a compact package. The proposed antenna can change its state from linear polarization (LP) to circular polarization (CP) by actuating the MEMS switch, which controls the configuration of the coupling ring slot. Low-loss quartz is used for a radiating patch substrate and at the same time for a packaging lid by stacking it onto the MEMS substrate, which can increase the system integrity. The fabricated antenna shows broadband impedance matching and exhibits high axial ratios better than 15 dB in the LP and small axial ratios in the CP, with a minimum value of 0.002 dB at 20.8 GHz in the K-band.
