Analysis of lenticular 3D liquid crystal displays using 3D pixel simulator

  • In this paper, an accurate ray-tracing based visual analysis method of lenticular 3D liquid liquid crystal display (LCDs) and some analysis results are presented. In the developed method, the geometric optics analysis is performed on the single 3D unit pixel of 3D lenticular LCD. It is shown that the display characteristics of 3D lenticular LCD panels of arbitrary size can be evaluated through the 3D unit pixel analysis. The analysis results of a few representative structures of 3D lenticular LCDs are compared.

  • A direct-lit liquid crystal display that does not use color filters is proposed. A backlight unit that employs compartmentalized RGB LED and lenticular-lens arrays is used instead of color filters to direct the RGB LED lights into the RGB subpixels. The color-filterless LED backlight design, simulation, and experiment results are presented.

  • A liquid crystal display that does not use color filters is proposed. A backlight unit that employs compartmentalized RGB LED arrays and a lenticular lens array is used instead of the color filters in order to direct RGB LED lights into the RGB subpixels.   • We propose multi-layer aspheric lenticular lens for rear projection screen to provide wide viewing angle. Each pitch of lenticular lens sheet is divided by three region and image light from projection optical system is propagated widely on each region due to different focal point. Besides, to improve vertical viewing angle of screen, we propose glass bead embedded screen on observer side of lenticular lens.

  • We propose an analysis method of an autostereoscopic display system with lenticular lens array using finite ray-tracing method that is verified by the geometrical optics. In the present work, we adopt the cylinder equation for the mathematical expression of the lenticular lens. For the calculation of the direction cosine of the transmitted ray, we first calculate the refracting point at bottom of the lens and the direction cosine of the incident ray that propagating through the lens by the Snell's law, and then apply to finite ray-tracing method. Finally, we obtain the simulation results for the intensity distribution of the ray at optimal viewing distance. From these results, we confirm the realization of 3D image that exists separately according to the viewing position at an optimal viewing distance.

  • We propose a generic method to calculate the optical functionalities of a 3D display with a lenticular lens array. In the present work, based on the geometrical optics, it is designed considering the specifications of the display panel. For the effective simulation, we first calculate the optical functionalities of a single cylindrical lens and, by comparing with the results obtained from the conventional geometrical optics, confirm the validity of the present method. Afterwards, we obtain the full distribution of the light intensity at an optimum viewing distance by expanding the results of the single lens to the horizontal plane of the display panel. From these results, we finally confirm whether the 3D images are realized or not in the system.

  • A tangible floating display that can provide different perspective views without special glasses being introduced. The proposed system can display perspective floating images in the space in front of the system with the help of concave mirrors. In order to avoid wearing special equipment to interact and deliver the sense of touch, the proposed system adopted an ultrasound focusing technology. For providing an immersive experience to the viewers, the proposed system consists of a tangible floating display system and a multiple-view imaging system for generating three lenticular displays in front of the users.

  • We propose an asymmetric integral imaging method to adjust the resolution and depth of a three-dimensional image. Our method is obtained by use of two lenticular sheets with different pitches fabricated under the same F/#. The asymmetric integral imaging is the generalized version of integral imaging, including both conventional integral imaging and one-dimensional integral imaging. We present experimental results to test and verify the performance of our method computationally.

  • Auto-stereoscopic 3D of 60-view number is made using slanted lenticular lens array and LCD of 15.1 inch diagonal size and 3200 by 2400 pixel numbers. Due to its large view number, smooth motion parallax is observed and the visual fatigue is reduced.

  • 대부분의 골퍼들은 그린 공략을 위해 세컨샷 지점에서의 남은 거리에 관심이 많으며, 이에 대한 정확한 정보가 스코어 향상에 도움을 주는 요소중 필수적 사항이라고 생각하고 있으며, 클럽 선택을 위한 기초적 자료로 활용하고 있다. 하지만 단순히 도식 또는 숫자로 표현되는 정보는 세컨샷을 위한 정확한 자료로 사용하기에는 부적절하며 오히려 실수를 유발할 수 있으며 골프에 대한 만족감을 저해시키는 영향을 주기도 한다. 그래서 본 연구에서는 종래의 이미지 지도를 활용한 방법에 대한 현실적 대안으로서 실제 3차원 디스플레이가 가능한 렌티큘러 기술을 통한 코스맵 제작을 수행하였다. 본 기술은 항공영상 촬영된 영상을 기반으로 수치정사영상을 제작하고 좌우입체 스테레오 영상을 취득하고 렌티큘러 기술을 활용하여 코스맵을 제작함으로서 종래의 이미지 지도 표현의 한계를 극복하였다. 이러한 기술의 강점은 입체효과에 관한 융통적 접근이 기능한 점이 큰 특징이라 하겠다. 본 연구에서 렌티큘러 포일 기술의 간략한 개요를 제시하며 골프코스 3차원 야디지 북의 제작에 대해 설명하였으며, 연구수행을 위해 입체로 촬영된 영상을 활용하여 3차원 효과를 주기위한 합성 이미지를 제작하고 이를 렌티큘러 포일에 입체적으로 디스플레이 함으로서 3차원 입체 지도를 제작하였다.
