  • In this paper a forward-backward can extrusion process are analyzed by using rigid-plastic FEM simulation. FEM simulation is conducted to investigate forming characteristics such as deformation modes fur different process parameters. Design parameters such as thickness ratio, punch angle, friction factor and diameter ratio are selected to study the effect of them on the pattern of material flow. The analysis is focused mainly on the influences of the design factors on deformation pattern in terms of forming load, extruded length ratio and volume ratio. It is known for the simulation that the forming load, the length ratio and the volume ratio increase as the thickness ratio (TR), the wall thickness in forward direction to that in backward direction, decreases. The various punch angles have slight influence on the forming load. length ratio and volume ratio. However friction factor have little effect on the forming characteristics such as the forming load, volume ratio and so on. In addition the forming load increases as diameter ratio (DR), the outer diameter of a can in forward direction to that in backward direction, increases. Furthermore the extruded length ratio is lowest with a certain value of DR=0.85 among diameter ratios. Pressure distribution exerted on the die-material interface is illustrated schematically.

  • This paper reports on the elatic-plastic analysis and fracture behavior of cylinder with outer surface crack which is under external or internal pressure. For the studuty of crack length effects in cylinder, ratios of crack lengths to finite thickness (a/t) are dertermined 0.3, 0.4, 0.5. For the study of curvature effects in cylinders, ratios of mean diameter to finite thicknees (Rm/t) are determined 10.0, 15.0, 20.0. Analysis is conduceted using the theory of fracture mechanics and two dimensional finite element solution assuming the axi-symmetrical plane strain conditon. Main results of this study are as follows. 1) It is known from this paper that elastic-plastic strain is initiated near crack tip and enlarged between crack tip and inner side of cylinder. 2) $K_{1}$ of cylinder under external or internal pressure is evaluated memebrane stress .root..pi.* crack length. The results of this study are inclined to Lomacky's results and Kobayshi's result. 3) Distribution of stress near crack tip is looked higher than of other zone, as crack length of equal model is longer, and as diameter of cylinder is longer. 4) When other conditions are equal, displacemenet near crack tip is looked duller, as length is longer.

  • To determine if Antarctic krill employ body shrinkage as one of its overwintering mechanisms in the field, Euphauia superba and Euphausia crystallorophias were collected during fall and winter in and around Marguerite Bay through US Southern Ocean GLOBEC field programs during fall and winter 2001 and 2002. The relationships between the body length and weight of both krill species were exponentially correlated with no significant differences between the two species (p>0.05). The ratio between eye diameter and body length of individual krill was examined in an expectation that it could be used as an indicator of the body shrinkage as previously suggested by Shin and Nicol (2002). These ratios were significantly different between the two krill species. Especially, E . crystallorophias had bigger eyes than E. superba. In both krill species, eye diameters were highly correlated with body lengths (regression coefficients ${\geq}0.70$). For E. crystallorophias, no significant differences of the ratio of eye diameter/body length were detected between fall and winter. Even though the ratios for E. superba were seasonally varied, it was not clear whether body shrinkage was an actual and critical overwintering mechanism for the krill population found in this study area. These results suggest that some individuals of E. superba might experience the body shrinkage during a part of their liff, but this morphological index alone (eye diameter/body length) may be insufficient to unambiguously separate the shrunk krill from the non-shrunk ones in the field-collected animals.

  • In a polarized light field, triangular plate bracket specimen of CR-39 with lightening hole were subjected to tension. The variables of the models used in the experiment were taken in the range of length-depth $ratio=0.583{\sim}1.715$, eccentricity of lightening hole from the geometrical center of $bracket=-1/4"{\sim}+1/4"$, and the lightening hole $diameter=1/2"{\sim}2"$. The isoclinics were drawn and from those the stress trajectories were constructed. Then the distributions of boundary stress around the lightening holes were determined from the isochromatic fringe pattern. The conclusions reached in this investigation are as follows: 1. Maximum stresses of the hole boundary are gradually increased when the diameter of the lightning hole increase. 2. Maximum stresses of the lightning hole boundary are decreased gradually when the eccentricity of the lightning hole from the geometrical center of the bracket to the farther side from the free end. 3. If the minimum distances from the free end of the brackets to the lightening hole boundaries are equal, the variation of the maximum stresses are in a small range for the change of lightening hole diameter and its location. 4. When the length-depth ratios are smaller than 0.8, the maximum stresses increase steeply. In the range of $0.8{\sim}1.2$ maximum stresses increase gradually and thereafter increase rapidly when the length-depth ratio of the bracket increase for the same diameter of a lightening hole.

  • For roughened annular pipes with diameter ratios of 0.26, 0.39, and 0.56 and with Reynolds numbers ranging 13,000 to 67,000, friction factor, autocorrelation coefficients, power spectral density functions, and integral length scales for each flow condition using X-type hot wire anemometry system are experimentally investigated. Distributions of these quantities show that the times which the streamwise autocorrelation coefficients become zero first increase with decreasing the radius ratios of concentric annuli and Reynolds numbers, however the power spectra density functions increase with increasing the radius ratios and Reynolds number.

  • The main objective of the present study is to perform an experimental evaluation of five existing correlations for the subchannel pressure drop analysis of a wire-wrapped fuel assembly. For this purpose, a series of water experiments have been performed using a helical wire-wrapped 19-pin fuel assembly for various test parameters. Four different test sections with different pitch to rod diameter ratios (P/D) and wire lead length to rod diameter ratios (H/D) have been fabricated. A series of pressure drop measurements were made to obtain friction factors for these four test sections. The new data along with existing data are used to evaluate existing correlations. Both the original and the simplified Cheng and Todreas correlations give the best agreement with experimental data for all flow regions.

  • This paper presents the fibre-matrix interfacial properties of hooked end steel fibres embedded in ultra-high performance mortars with various water/binder (W/B) ratios. The principle objective was to improve bond behaviour in terms of bond strength by reducing the (W/B) ratio to a minimum. Results show that a decrease in W/B ratio has a significant effect on the bond-slip behaviour of both types of 3D fibres, especially when the W/B ratio was reduced from 0.25 to 0.15. Furthermore, the optimization in maximizing pullout load and total pullout work is found to be more prominent for the 3D fibres with a larger diameter than for fibres with a smaller diameter. On the contrary, increasing the embedded length of the 3D fibres did not result in an improvement on the maximum pullout load, but increase in the total pullout work.

  • Pressure coefficient in rotating discharge hole was measured to gain insight into the influence of rotation to the discharge characteristics of rotating discharge hole. Pressure measurements were done by the telemetry system that had been developed by the authors. The telemetry system measures static pressure using piezoresistive pressure sensors. Pressure coefficients in rotating discharge hole were measured in longitudinal direction and circumferential direction with various rotating speed and 3 pressure ratios. From the results, the pressure coefficient, and therefore the discharge coefficient, is known to decrease with the increase of Ro number owing to the increase of flow approaching angle to the discharge hole inlet. However, there exists critical Ro number where the decrease rate of discharge coefficient with the increase of Ro number changes abruptly; flow separation occurs from the discharge hole exit at this critical Ro number. Critical Ro number increases with the increase of length-to-diameter ratio, but the increase is small where the length-to-diameter ratio is higher than 3. The decrease rate of discharge coefficient with the increase of Ro number depends on the pressure recovery at the discharge hole, and the rate is different from each length-to-diameter ratio; it has tendency that the short discharge hole shows higher decrease rate of discharge coefficient.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of nozzle orifice shapes and the nozzle length-to-diameter ratio(L/D) on the nozzle cavitation formation inside the orifice and the external flow pattern. The nozzle used in this work was tested the taper orifice nozzle and the rectangular orifice nozzle which was made from the transparent acrylic acid resin. For studying the effect of the nozzle L/D ratio, it was used to three L/D ratios of 3.33, 10, and 20. The cavitation flow of nozzle was visualized by using the ICCD camera and optical system. This work revealed that the flow rate and discharge coefficient($C_d$) of the taper orifice nozzle was larger than those of the rectangular orifice nozzle at the same injection pressure. The cavitation flow was observed in the nozzle orifice at the low injection pressure and the breakup of liquid jet was promoted as the L/D ratio is decreased. The cavitation of biodiesel fuel was formed at the lower injection pressure than that of diesel fuel because of higher viscosity and density.
