A Study on the Selection of Fillet Weld Conditions by Considering the Tack Welds (가접부를 고려한 필릿 용접조건의 선정에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, an experimental method for the selection of optimal welding condition was proposed in the fillet weld which was done over the tack weld. This method used the response surface analysis in which the leg length and the reinforcement height were chosen as the quality variables of the weld bead profile. The overall desirability function, which was combined desirability function fur the two quality variables, was employed as the objective function for getting the optimal welding condition. In the experiments, the target values of the leg length and the reinforcement height are 6m and zero respectively for the horizontal fillet weld of 10mm thickness mild steel. The optimal welding conditions could predict the weld bead profile(leg length and reinforcement height) as 6.00mm and 0.19mm without tack weld and 6.00mm and 0.48mm with tack weld. from a series of welding test, it was revealed that a uniform weld bead can be obtained by adopting the optimal welding condition which was determined according to the method proposed.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the proper fillet weld size for the stiffeners on hull bottom plate of crude oil tanker. To achieve it, the effective notch stress and hot spot stress of the fillet weld with leg length specified in the rule were evaluated by using comprehensive FE analyses. Based on the results, the fatigue damages at each location of weld were calculated. Meanwhile the transitional behavior of initial welding distortion in the hull bottom plate under the design conditions was investigated by using a non-linear FEA. Welding distortion and residual stress introduced during fabrication process were considered as initial imperfections. According to FE analysis results, if the fillet leg length satisfies the design criteria of the classification society, the concern on the root failure at the fillet welds in the bottom hull plate during the design life can be negligible. In addition, considering the transitional behavior of the distortion during the service life, the fillet leg length should be minimized.

  • The high-speed rotating arc process forms a flat bead surface with decreased penetration depth because the molten droplets are deflected by centrifugal force. Therefore the rotating arc welding for horizontal fillet welding increases the leg length with the increase of rotation frequency and prevents the deflection of weld bead and overlap. In this study, the relationship between the welding parameters and the weld bead shape - leg length and undercut - are investigated experimentally. Consequently, the weld quality could be improved by rotating arc welding, and sound weld bead was achieved when applied to horizontal fillet welding with 4mm gap by avoiding the undercut which is inevitable for the conventional GMA welding methods.

  • The horizontal fillet joint is one of the most important weld joints in the shipbuilding industry. High-speed rotating arc welding, which can increase the leg length, is an effective way to improve the weld productivity and quality for the horizontal fillet welding. Based on the Taguchi method, the effects of welding parameters on bead characteristics - leg length, asymmetry, undercut, overlap - are investigated fur high-speed welding process. As a result, the adequate welding parameters are selected for the required leg length, symmetric bead and no undercut. Besides, considerably consistent leg length is observed for the horizontal fillet welding with gap variation up to 3mm.

  • Positioning the workpiece accurately and preventing the weld distortion, tack welding is often performed before main welding in the construction of welded structures. The weld bead size of the tack weld is determined according to the workpiece thickness, weld length, weld joint type etc. However, this tack weld deteriorates the final weld bead profile, so that the grinding process is usually adopted for the uniform weld bead profile. In this study, an experimental method for the selection of optimal welding condition was proposed in the fillet weld which was done over the tack weld.   • Among the various welding conditions, the welding current that is inversely proportional to the tip-to-work-piece distance is an essential parameter as to monitor the GMAW process and to implement the welding automation. Considering the weld pool surface geometry including weld defects, it should modify the signal processing method for automatic seam tracking in horizontal fillet welding. To meet the above necessities, a mathematical model related with the weld pool geometry was proposed as in a conjunction with the two-dimensional heat flow analysis of the horizontal fillet welding. The signal processing method based on the artificial neural network (Adaptive Resonance Theory) was proposed for discriminating the sound weld pool surface from that with the weld defects. The reliability of the numerical model and the signal processing method proposed were evaluated through the experiments of which showed that they are effective for predicting the weld bead shape with or without the weld defects in a horizontal fillet welding.

  • For the horizontal fillet welding with one plate in a vertical position, there will be a higher tendency of weld metal falling down rather than for the butt-welding in flat position. Such phenomenon could bring about the overlap or deflection of weld pool, and consequently induce the poor mechanical strength of weldments. Therefore, a precise position control of welding torch in conjunction with the weld qualify plays an important role in welding robot applications. In the present study, an experimental method was proposed for deriving a mathematical model between the leg length and the welding conditions. Finally, an algorithm was proposed for weld seam tracking and improvement of the weld quality. The reliability of the proposed algorithm was evaluated through various experiments, which showed that the proposed algorithm can be very effective for tracking the weld line and simultaneously achieving the sound weld bead.

  • Among various welding parameters, the welding current which is inversely proportional to the tip-to-workpiece distance in GMAW is an essential parameter to monitor the GMAW process of horizontal fillet joints. For the case of weld defect such as overlap in horizontal fillet welding, therefore, the signal processing for process monitoring or automatic seam tracking should be modified by considering the weld pool surface geometry including the corresponding weld defect. In other words, the adequate signal processing algorithm is indispensible to improve the performance of the arc sensor. However, arc sensor algorithm already developed usually focus on weld seam tracing but do not considering the weld qualities. In this paper, various experiments were carried out to investigate the tendencies of the weld defects when weaving motion is added, and the experimental method based on 2$^n$ factorial design was proposed for deriving the mathematical model between the leg length and the various welding conditions. Moreover, a signal processing method based on the artificial neural network(Adaptive Resonance Theory) was proposed far discriminating the current signal of sound weld beads from that of weld beads with overlap. Finally, the algorithm for weld seam tracking combined with the mathematical modeling and the signal processing method was carried out to track the weld line in conjunction with the improvement of the weld qualities. The reliability of the proposed algorithms were evaluated through various experiments, which showed that the proposed algorithms could be effectively used for arc welding automation.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the predictive equation of angular distortion and longitudinal shrinkage force at the intermittent fillet weldment using FEA and experiment. The angular distortion and shrinkage force of the intermittent fillet weldment linearly increases with an increase in the ratio of weld length(Lw) to weld span(Ls). Based on the results, The predictive equation of distortion at the intermittent fillet weldment was defined as a linear function of Lw/Ls and the predictive equation of the distortion for continuous fillet weldment.

  • In this study, one side fillet welded T-joint, used in box type girder and other welding structure, was investigated by stress analysis and bending fatigue test without edge preparation, with variation of joint shape. The purpose of this study is to give the welding condiltion and design standard on manufacturing one side fillet welded T-joint. As a result, the following conclusions were obtained. 1) In one side fillet welded T-joint, the larger the leg length and the penetration depth, the greater the bending fatigue strength because reduction of stress and strain on toe and root. The increase of the longitudinal leg length rather than vertical leg length contributed to the increase in bending fatigue strength. 2) In one side fillet welded T-joint without edge preparation, both general manual welding and general automatic welding were carried out with same condition. In this case, automatic welding showed deeper penetration and more increased longitudinal leg length than manual welding, so that automatic welding offers greater bending fatigue strength. 3) For one side fillet welded T-joint without edge preparation with automatic welding, the ratio(h/t) of the leg length(h) and the main plate thickness(t) in which toe crake can occur was 1.0 over.
