  • This study, to enhance the sterilization, browning inhibition and precooling effect of electrolyzed oxidizing water(EOW) as cleaning water on food industry, was carried out to investigate the efficacy of electrolyzed oxidizing water(EOW) with 0.85% NaCl, 0.5% ethanol, polysorbate 80 of 1 ppm, 0.5% lemon juice and 0.5% citron juice. Escherichia coli KCTC 1039 with initial count of 5.63$\times$10$\^$8/ CFU/mL were reduced to <10$^1$CFU/mL after 15∼30 sec when it was treated by electrolyzed oxidizing water added with various food additives. Bacillus cereus KCTC 1012 were reduced to <10$^1$ CFU/mL after 2 minutes treatment with electrolyzed oxidizing water containing polysorbate 80 and ethanol. Iactobacillus plantarum KCTC 3108 were reduced to <10$^1$CFU/mL after 30 sec treatment with electrolyzed oxidizing water containing polysorbate 80, citron juice and lemon juice, respectively. Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora KCTC 2776 were reduced to <10$^1$CFU/mL after 30 sec treatment with electrolyzed oxidizing water containing polysorbate 80 and lemon juice. Browning inhibition effect was determined by comparison of polyphenol oxidase activity. Inhibition ratio of polyphenol oxidase was approximately 62∼84% in most treatments with the exception of 57% and 25% inhibition by 0.5% ascorbic acid and polysorbate 80, respectively. Sliced potato dipped in electrolyzed oxidizing water containing NaCl and citron juice for 30 minutes showed significantly low PPO activity, 64 units in treatment with NaCl and 91 units in treatment with citron juice. At the same time, changes in color value(△E) of sliced potato was below 3 in most treatments.

  • Objectives : Present study investigated the hepatoprotective effects of various combinations of lemon balm and dandelion (LD) leaf extract on carbon tetrachloride ($CCl_4$)-induced acute liver injury. Methods : Mice were orally treated with 200 mg/kg of LD extracts [1:1, 1:2, 1:4, 1:6, 1:8, 2:1, 4:1, 6:1, or 8:1 (weight : weight)] for 7 days, and then intraperitoneally injected with $CCl_4$ (0.5 mL/kg). Silymarin (100 mg/kg) was used as reference drug. Body weight gain, relative liver weight, serum biochemistry, histopathologic analyses, and hepatic antioxidant system were examined to elucidate the fittest combination ratio of LD extract. Results : All varying combinations of LD extract significantly increased body weight gain and decreased relative liver weight by $CCl_4$. In addition, LD extract reduced serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase. Histopathological analyses indicated that LD extract significantly decreased histological activity index score, degenerated hepatocytes, and infiltrated inflammatory cells induced by $CCl_4$. Moreover, LD extract reduced lipid peroxidation, and attenuated the reduction of hepatic glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and catalase by $CCl_4$. Although there were no statistical differences in body weight gain between silymarin- and LD extract-treated groups, administration of 1:1, 2:1, and 4:1 combination of LD extract exhibited more favorable hepatoprotective effects than silymarin. Especially, 2:1 combination of LD extract showed the most potent hepatoprotective effects. Conclusion : Of various combinations of LD extract tested, present results suggest that 2:1 combination of LD extract would be a promising herbal formulation to protect liver from oxidative stress.

  • In this study, the cell viability, radical scavenging ability, elastase activity, moisturizing activity, and antimicrobial activity of mixed fermented extract of vitamin tree fruit, acai palm fruit, mango, lemon, apricot and blueberry as an active ingredient were measured. The experiment was performed at three concentrations(0.5 / 1.5 / 2%), since cytotoxicity was not shown at these three concentrations. Based on this, a radical scavenging experiment was conducted to compare with L-ascorbic acid, a representative raw material of an antioxidant material. The results showed that the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging ability was 95.1 ± 0.6%, 94.3 ± 0.7%, 95.3 ± 0.6%, 95.1 ± 0.7%, 95.1 ± 0.3%, 95.5 ± 0.3%, and 95.4 ± 0.4% respectively, when the concentration of the mixed fermentation extract was 2%. As the concentration increased at the three concentrations (0.5/1.5/2%) and the content of blueberry extracts increased, sample 7 showed excellent elastase activity at a concentration of 2% to 0.9 cm, such as retinol crystal, and moisturizing activity was also found to be 71.5%, 75.6%, and 81.6%, respectively. Particularly, at the 2% concentration of the mixed fermented extract, the antibacterial activity effect on Propionibacterium was very excellent in sample 7. Therefore, it is considered that it is worth developing the mixed fermented extracts of 2% concentration as a cosmetic component with antioxidant, moisturizing, and antibacterial properties.

  • The effects of prolonged photoperiod (additional night lighting) were investigated on the production of Ocimum basilicum (lemon basil) and fish/crayfish raised in a nutrient film technique aquaponic system. Hybrid lemon fin barb and red claw crayfish juveniles were co-cultured with O. basilicum and subjected to 12 h of ambient natural daylight and additional 0, 4, 8, and 12 h of night lighting for 14 weeks (two batches of 7 weeks each). The water quality parameters and the performance characteristics of the fish/crayfish/plant were evaluated, and the nutri- ent uptake (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) in the system by the three organisms was also measured. The fish growth performance showed no significant differences (p > 0.05) in all the growth parameters measured across the treatments. The body proximate and nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium (NPK) composition of the fish and crayfish were not significantly (p > 0.05) different across the treatments. Similarly, there was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in the NPK uptake by the fish and crayfish across the treatments. The plant growth performance showed that there were no significant (p > 0.05) differences in the plant growth parameters measured, except for % plant height gained in the 12 h-light treatment (403.2 ± 26.0%) which was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than other treatments and cycles. Hence, this study demonstrat- ed that varying supplementary night lighting has no significant effect on the growth performance of O. basilicum, hybrid lemon fin barb, and red claw crayfish. This study, therefore, suggests that supplementary night lighting should not be considered for O. basilicum production as it does not significantly improve the performance characteristics of the plant nor the fish co-cultured with it in a polyculture aquaponic system.

  • Citrus scab caused warty and scabby lesions on the surface of leaves, twigs and fruits of Satsuma mandarin. Warty lesions were mainly developed before July but scabby ones were developed during summer season in Cheju island, Korea. The casual organism of scab was morphologically identified as Sphaceloma fawcettii and was thought to be Tryon's pathotype of Elsinoe fawcettii, because it was pathogenic on rough lemon and Cleopatra mandarin but non-pathogenic on sour orange, grapefruit and sweet orange among the 5 differential hosts of E. fawcettii.

  • A person's life consists of two important stages: the first stage as a student and the second stage as a worker. In an integrated model of education and career concerns, I analyze the welfare effects of education. In Spence's job market signaling model, education as a sorting device improves efficiency by mitigating the lemon market problem. In contrast, in the integrated model, education as a sorting device can be detrimental to social welfare, as it eliminates work incentives generated by career concerns.

  • Fragrant microcapsules were prepared by in situ polymerization using urea-formaldehyde prepolymer. Lemon oil and migrin oil as susceptible materials were used. The diameter and distribution of the microcapsule were controlled by several factors, such as wall material, core material content, emulsion agent and stirring speed, respectively. Susceptible cotton fabrics with fragrant release functionality were successfully produced by using microcapsule containing fragrant materials.
