Studies on the Effect of K2O Fertilization for the Pasture Improvement (Part I) (초지개량(草地改良)에 미치는 가리시비(加里施肥)의 효과(效果)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究)(제(第) I 보(報)))

  • This experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of potassium application level for pasture management in Chungnam area. The results obtained were as follows. 1. The seedling establishment of pasture species was slightly depressed by high potassium application. 2. By increasing potassium application level, the winter hardiness of pasture species increased. 3. The forage yield of pasture species was more increased in legume single seeding than grass single and mixed seeding by higher potassium application. 4. The $K_2O$ content in forage was increased markedly by increasing potassium application level on grass single block. 5. The results obtained from this experiment indicated that potassium application level much effective on the winter hardiness of pasture species and forage yield specially in legume single seeding and adequate amount of potassium would be 20kg per 10a in this area.

Study on Baled Silage Making of Selected Forage Crop and Pesture Grasses III. Evaluation of chemical components and energy contents of baled silage with selected forage (주요사료작물의 곤포 Silage 조제이용에 관한 연구 III. 작물별 곤포 silage의 일반 성분과 에너지함량 평가)

  • The quality of silages, made from whole crop barley, rye, spring oat, Italian ryeglass, orchardgrass, alfalfa and grass-legume pasture mixtures, were evaluated under two different conservation techniques in baled silage making (BS) and conventional silages(CS). Crops materials were harvested at the stage of the greatest dry matter accumulation(hard dough for barley, soft dough for rye and oat, late bloom for Italian ryegrass and others pasture species), and baled in a self constructed square baling chamber weighted by 25~30kg in dry matter basis. Each bales were wrapped with 0.05mm thick polyethylen plastic film and stored six months long in stack silos. Barley, rye, oat and Italian ryegrass including of pasture crops produced higher quality silages in the baled silage making, due to better organic acid fermentation and lower nutrient losses during the period of storage than those in the conventional silages. TDN contents of barley silages were 65.3% in BS and 63.7% in CS, NEL value of barley silages was improved hum 6.48MJ(CS) to 6.61MJ/kg(BS) in dry matter basis. Silage quality of rye, oat and pasture crops were also improved markedly in the baled silage utilization.

Effects of Priming Duration and Temperature on the Germination of Forage Seed (Priming 처리시간 및 온도가 목초종자의 발아특성에 미치는 영향)

  • Seed priming is an useful technique for increasing germination and early establishment of seedlings. In this experiment, the conditions for priming of pasture seeds (tall fescue, orchardgrass, alfalfa and white clover) have been optimized to ensure an early germination and more uniform growth of seedlings. The experiment was conducted in a split plot design with three replications. The main plots consisted of four different priming duration such as 2, 4, 6 and 8 days for grass, and 1, 2, 3 and 4 days for legume. The subplots were consisted of three priming temperature such as 10, 15 and $20^{\circ}C$. Effects of priming duration and temperature were different in all four pasture seeds examined. The germination of primed grass (tall fescue and orchardgrass) was the highest on 6 days in priming duration, whereas that of legume (alfalfa and white clover) was the highest on 2 days. In priming temperature, the germination of primed orchradgrass increased as decreasing temperature, however that of legume increased as increasing temperature. These results suggest that seed priming induced earlier and higher germination for all four pastures tested. However, the degree of priming effectiveness on pasture species depending on the priming duration and its temperature.

  • This report deals with the effect of levels of concentrate supplementary feeding (Nil, 0.25% BW and 0.75% BW) on the productivity of different genotypes (Thai native (TN), 25% Anglo-Nubian (AN), 50% AN and 75% AN) of female goats grazing newly established pasture in a tropical area. The major species of grass was Brachiaria mutica (33%) and of legumes was Centrosema pubescens (34%). There was no significant (p>0.05) difference between nil and 0.25% BW supplementary feeding for growth rate ($g/kg^{0.75}/d$). However, goats fed 0.75% BW supplementary feeding had significantly (p<0.01) higher growth rates than did other treatments. There was no significant (p>0.05) difference among genotypes and between age for growth rate. There was no interaction between feeding and genotype for growth rate.

The Study on the Application Level of Swine Slurry in Grassland Pasture (초지에서의 돈분액비 시용수준에 관한 연구)

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the availability of swine slurry on mixed grassland pasture. Three types of fertilizer was used, chemical fertilization($N-P_2O_5-K_2O=210-150-180kg/ha$), no fertilization and swine slurry was further subdivide into three groups (100%, 150%, 200%) as compared to the level of N used in the chemical fertilizer. The results showed that dry mater yield of forage was increased with increasing application level of swine slurry. Production of dry matter of swine slurry 200% was similar to that of chemical fertilizer, but percentage of legume in mixed pasture was lower in chemical fertilization. Percentage of legume was increased with increasing application level of swine slurry. Level of $NO_3-N$ in filtered water was very low in all groups applied with swine slurry. Based on this results the optimum level of swine slurry application is 200% of the normal standard of N fertilizer used in grassland pasture.

The Optimal Combination and Amount of Major Nutrients Computed by the Homes Systematic Variation Technique for the Hilly Pasture Development I.   • This pot experiments were conducted to find out the optimal fertilization ratios of the N:S:P anions and K:Ca:Mg cations of major nutrients in an orchardgrass/ladino clover mixed sward. The optimum ratios in equivalent basis were computed by the Homes systematic variations technique. The soil samples were collected from the newly reclaimed soils, which are located on colluvial hilly area with a good consideration for the hilly pasture development. The results were summarized as follows; 1, the optimum fertilization ratios of major nutrients for the high yields by the forage species in a mixed sward were obtained (Table 4 in detail); N:S:P = 3:l: 1 and K:Ca:Mg = 1:l: 1 for grass and grass plus legume, and N:S:P = 1:6:43 and K:Ca:Mg = 1: 3: 1 for legume in general. 2. The yield increases from the systematic variations in this mixed sward were laid in following order; N > P >S-group and K >Mg >Ca-group for grass and grass plus legume, and P >S >N-group and Ca >Mg > K-group for legume. Especially, the yields were greatly increased at the N-group for grass, and at the Pand Ca-groups for legume. 3. Soil pH-value was descreased at the Sgroup, and somewhat increased at the Ca- and Mg-groups. The content of available $P_2O_5$, CEC and base saturation were greatest with the Ca-group. 4. At the N-group, the N-contents were highest and the P-contents were lowest in grass and grass plus legume, which resulted in the highest Ca/P ratio of 2.15 among the anion groups. Whereas the highest Ca/P ratio of 9.20 in legume was obtained at the Ca-group. Legume showed in general higher Ca/P ratio and lower K/(Ca+Mg) ratio than these in grass. 5 . There were differences in the effects of systematic variations of major nutrients on the dry matter yields and the mineral yields. The optimum fertilization ratios of anions and cations for the high mineral yields were obtained (Table E), which showed differences comparing with the ratios for the high dry matter yields. The antagonis between the cations K and Mg was known from the point of mineral yields of mixed forages.

  • Using modified Lincoln solution, hydroponic system was developed to compare simultaneously a range of pasture species in terms of relative growth rate(RGR), rate of roots to shoots, and relative root volume and root area. Modified Lincoln solution achieved optimum growth of nineteen forage species tested, and was proved to be a good method for studying plant root characteristics. RGR was measured sucesshlly showing reasonably consistant values over time. There was a much differences in rootkhoot ratio between species within groups as between groups. Root tissue density was lower in grasses than legume or herb group. Root area index was very high for grasses and herbs, and this index should be useful for evaluating the comparative root system of different species.

Sudies on the of $K_2O$Fertilization for the Pasturu Improvement (초지개량에 미치는 가리시비의 효과에 관한 연구)

  • To clarify the direct effect of potassium and interactions with nitrogen and phosphorus on the yield of pasture plants, fertilizer experiment with varied levels of potassium and nitrogen treatment to grass single seeding, legume single seeding and grass-legume mixed seeding, was conducted for three years from 1977 to 1980. The summary of obtained experimental result may be described as below: 1. Potassium application, at any level of amount, did not show its effect to the establishment of plant population, however potash application responded to help winter hardiness at grass single seeding plot. 2. Potassium effect on the fresh yield at grass single seeding was distinct however, not clear effect was observed at legume single seeding and grass-legume mixed seeding plots. 3. For drymatter yield, the highest yield at legume single seeding was recorded 1.152 Kilograms per 10a are at treatment #4 and the highest yields of grass-legume mixed seeding and grass were recorded 1,093 kilograms (Treatment #3) and 834 kilograms (Treatment #5) respectively. 4. In observation of plant succession, they were found that orchardgrass and tall fescue have increased at grass single seeding plot and Alfalfa was dominant over 90 per cent of plant population at legume single seeding and grass-legume mixed seeding plots. It seems that potash effect was distinct in increasing orchardgrass population. 5. The results of this experiment shown that the maximum yield from grass single seeding was obtained at the plat where applied 20-20-30 kg/10a, $N-P_2O_5-K_2O$ and the maximum yield from legume single seeding was obtained at the plot applied with 8-20-20 kg/10a, $N-P_2O_5-K_2O$. 6. Fertilizer cost for producing one kilogram of dry matter in this experiment was lowest at treatment #1 of grass-legume mixed seeding and highest at treatment #5 of grass single seeding. The largest gross income was obtained from the plots where phosphate application was omitted. 7. From the results of this experiment, it may be recommended that economically optimum fertilizer application for grass single seeding will be 20-20-20- kg/10a, $N-P_2O_5-K_2O$ and for legume single seeding and grass-legume mixed seeding will be 8-20-20 kg/10a, $N-P_2O_5-K_2O$.

Nutritional Characteristics of Forage Grown in South of Benin

  • In order to provide recommendations on the most useful forage species to smallholder farmers, eleven grass and eleven legume forages grown in Abomey-Calavi in Republic of Benin were investigated for nutritive value (i.e. chemical composition and energy content) and fermentation characteristics (i.e. gas and volatile fatty acid production, organic matter degradability). The in vitro gas production technique was used, incubating the forages for 120 h under anaerobic condition with buffalo rumen fluid. Compared to legume, tropical grass forages showed lower energy (8.07 vs 10.57 MJ/kg dry matter [DM]) and crude protein level (16.10% vs 19.91% DM) and higher cell wall content (neutral detergent fiber: 63.8% vs 40.45% DM), respectively. In grass forages, the chemical composition showed a quite high crude protein content; the in vitro degradability was slightly lower than the range of tropical pasture. The woody legumes were richer in protein and energy and lower in structural carbohydrates than herbaceous plants, however, their in vitro results are influenced by the presence of complex compounds (i.e. tannins). Significant correlations were found between chemical composition and in vitro fermentation characteristics. The in vitro gas production method appears to be a suitable technique for the evaluation of the nutritive value of forages in developing countries.

Effectiveness of Magnesium-and Boron-Enriched Complex Fertilizer ( 8-25-7-3-0.2 ) on the Pasture Establishment II. Change in the forage yields, yield components, botanical and chemical compositions in a mixed grass/clover sward (초지조성용 복합비료 ( 8-25-7-3-0. 2 ) 의 개발시험 II. 총건물수량 , 수량구성요소 , 식생구성비율 및 목초의 영양성분에 미치는 영향)

  • This field experiment was undertaken to assess the effectiveness of magnesium- and boronenriched complex fertilizer ($N-P_2O_5-K_2O-MgO-B_2O_3$ : 8-25-7-3-0.2) compared with some straight fertilizers on the hilly pasture establishment. This second part was concerned with the changes in the forage yields, yield components, botanical and chemical compositions in a mixed grassclover sward (orchardgrass, tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, and ladino clover). The results from a two-year experiment are summarized as follows: 1. Dry matter yields of whole mixed forages were significantly reduced in control by 54.5% and the NK-plot ($P_o$ by 35.0%, compared with the normal NPK-plots. 2. The yields of oversown grasses were significantly reduced in control by 79.7% and the NKplot ($P_o$) by 52.196, compared with the normal NPK applications. At the normal NPK applications, the oversown grasses were lowest in the yields when provided with double superphosphate with no significant differences. The yields of weeds were not significantly influenced by the treatments. 3. The significant differences in the legume yields (relative yield, %) were laid in the follow. ing increasing order; complex fertilizer (178.5%) > NPK-fused superphosphate (139.5%) > NPK-double superphosphate (100.0%) = control > NK (51.1%). The legume yield was much more depressed in the NK-plot ($P_o$) than in control ($N_oP_oK_o$). 4. The rate of oversown grasses and whole forages were increased by the normal NPK applications, showing little difference among the kinds of fertilizers. It was recognized that the application of complex fertilizer contributed to the increasing of legume rate in the mixed sward. This contribution turned out to be due to the rather enhanced performance and yield-increase of legume, compared with the straight fertilizers. 5. With the NK-treatment ($P_o$) the P concentration in mixed forages dropped below the critical level (0.2%). The Mg concentrations in mixed forages were lower in all the plots than the critical level (0.2%). Therefore, a sufficient amount of Mg was desirably to be applied It is recommended that, in relation to its effectiveness and simplification of fertilizer application, the application of this complex fertilizer for pasture establishment be carried out. The change of the constituent ratio of complex fertilizer to the standard of "8 - 15-20 - 7 - 5-10 - 0.2" considering the need of sufficient Mg supply and the continuous accumulation of P in the top-surface soil is possibly recommended.commended.
