EFFECT OF FEEDING LEGUME FORAGE WITH STRAW SUPPLEMENTATION ON MILK PRODUCTION AT PABNA MILK SHED AREA

  • An experiment was conducted at Pabna milkshed area under Bathan condition during November, 1992 to February 1993 with 16 milking cows fed legume forage with straw supplementation (treated group) and 8 milking cows fed legume forage only (control group). From the study, the results revealed that supplementation of straw with leguminous diet increases the total dry matter intake (DMI) of 11.83 kg/d/cow for the treated group and 11.53 kg/d/cow for the control group. The average daily legume forage intake was $37.39{\pm}8.67kg/d/cow$ and $49.62{\pm}10.57kg/d/cow$ for the treated and control group respectively and the difference was significant (p < 0.05). The results also exhibited that due to the supplementation of straw, the legume forage intake reduced by 12 kg/d/cow. The forage dry matter intake (DMI) kg/d/cow for the treated and control groups were $6.18{\pm}1.44kg$ and $8.38{\pm}1.95kg$ respectively. The milk production was $8.64{\pm}1.15litre/day$ for the treated group which was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than the control group ($7.74{\pm}1.24litre/day$). The average initial body weight of the supplemented and control groups were $338.06{\pm}39.32kg$ and $329.87{\pm}48.03kg$ respectively. Whereas, the final body weight of supplemented group was $344.33{\pm}35.90kg$ and control group was $330.35{\pm}37.28kg$. It may be concluded that straw supplementation with legumes diet could save legume forage for further use as well as increase milk production.

  • Although corn is regarded as the most feasible forage corp, its relatively low content of protein is the critical we a kness for animal feeding. Many researches have been carried out to improve protein level in corn forage, however, there are no indicatable results but corn-legume intercropping. Plot test and proximate analysis were fullfill to compare dry matter yield and available nutrients of silage corn mono-culture system with those of corn-legume intercropping system of forage plant and silage. The MO culture system were observed by two stage of maturity, milk stage (Aug. 3), yellow stage (Aug. 24), and obtained following results. 1. Dry matter yields per 10 a at milk stage in corn mono-culture system was 596.2kg and corn-legume intercropping systems were 609.0 kg (corn-cowpea), 591.0 kg (corn-soybean) and 563.1 kg (corn-frenchbean), respectively. And comparable to them, 1508.9 kg (corn mono.), 1482.8 kg (corn-cowpea), 1482.6 kg (cornsoybean), 1379.1 kg (corn-frenchbean) were harvested at yellow stage. 2. The general trends of chemical composition by stages of maturity in corn mono-culture systems were higher than that of corn-legume intercropping system. 3. Crude protein content in corn-legume silages were significantly higher than corn mono-culture at yellow stage, except corn-frenchbean intercropping system. 4. Crude fiber content in corn-legume silage was higher than corn mono-culture silage harvested at yellow stage. 5. Consequently, corn-legume intercropping improved nutritional quality of silage than that of corn-monocultivated silage.

Studies on 5 Protein Fractions Prediction of Forage Legume Mixture by NIRS

  • This study was conducted to assess the feasibility of near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) as a rapid and reliable method for the estimation of crude protein (CP) fractions in forage legume mixtures (sudangrass and pea mixture, and kidney bean and potato mixture). A total of 178 samples were collected and their spectral reflectance obtained in the range of 400~2,500 nm. Of these, 50 samples were selected for calibration and validation, and 35 samples were used for calibration of the data set, and the modified partial least square regression (MPLSR) analysis was performed. The correlation coefficient ($r^2$) and the standard error of cross-validation (SECV) of the calibration models in the CP fractions, A, B1, B2, B3, and C, were 0.94 (1.05), 0.92 (0.74), 0.96 (0.95), 0.91 (0.42), and 0.83 (0.38), respectively. Fifteen samples were used for equation validation, and the $r^2$ and the standard error of prediction (SEP) were 0.87 (1.45), 0.91 (0.49), 0.94 (1.13), 0.36 (0.96), and 0.74 (0.67), respectively. This study showed that NIRS could be an effective tool for the rapid and precise estimation of CP fractions in forage legume mixtures.

Effects Of Grass/Legume Pasture on Forage Production, Forage Nutritive Values and Live Weight Gain of the Grazing Heifer

  • A grazing trial was carried out to determine the effects of different grass/legume pastures on forage production, legume proportion, nutritive value, and animal performance. The pasture mixtures were mainly orchardgrass (OG) + ladino clover (T1), OG + alfalfa (T2), perennial ryegrass + alfalfa (T3), and grass alone mainly OG (T4). The pastures were rotationally grazed 7 times with heifers which had an initial liveweight of about 243 kg in 1991 and 1992. The average plant height at each grazing was 32.4 cm. The annual dry matter yield ranged from 9.19 MT in T4 to 9.61 MT/ha in T3, but no significant difference among different mixture combinations was found. The proportion of ladino clover in T1 mixtures rapidly increased from 21% to 68% during the grazing season. However, the proportion of alfalfa in T2 and T3 ranged from 12% to 23%. The contents of crude protein and calcium, respectively, in the forages were highest in T1 (23.2%, 0.68%) and lowest in T4 (18.5%, 0.13%), while crude fiber content showed the opposite trends. Liveweight gain was greatest on T1 (1.073 kg) and lowest on T4 (643 kg). It was concluded that pasture mixtures containing legume (ladino clover) can increase forage nutritive value and animal performance.

  • This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of legume reseeding on legume establishment, dry matter yield, quality and botanical composition of grasses in timothy(Ph1eum prarense L.) dominated pasture at alpine area. Establishment number and percentage of legume in timothy dominated pasture were increased with spring, red clover(Tr$olium pratense L.) and gramoxone $treatment Dry matter yield of pasture was increased with fall and grazing after overseeding, but, there waq no difference in legume species. Crude protein content(%) of grasses at the first cutting was increased with red clover and paraquat (gramoxone) treatment. Based on the results, it is suggested that spring in seeding time, red clover in legume species and oveneeding after gramoxone treatment are good for effective renovation of timothy dominated pasture at alpine area.

A Comparison of Legume Residues as a Nitrogen Source for Silage Corn (콩과목초 잔주의 사일리지용 옥수수에 대한 질소 공급효과)

  • A field experiment was conducted at the forage experimental plots, Seoul National University, Suweon h m 1995 to 1996 to determine the effect of legume residues as a N source and N fertilizer on corn (Zea mays L.) silage yield, N uptake, and availability of inorganic N in the soil. Corn was grown following (i) red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), (ii) crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum L.), (iii) alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and (iv) winter fallow. The plots were split into two rates of fertilizer N (0 and 90kg Nlha) in a split-plot experimental plan. Compared with fallow treatment, legumes depleted soil water in the surface 15cm at corn planting by 17 to 26%. As a result, corn emergence was markedly delayed with legume residues by 8 to 11 days. Corn silage DM yield was significantly reduced in the presence of legume residues by 2.0 to 3.4 and 1.5 to 2.5 tonlha compared with winter fallow treatment at 0 and 90kg fertilizer Nlha, respectively, but no significant difference in the corn DM yield was found between legume residue treatments. There was an overall tendency for increased corn yields with 90kg fertilizer Nlha compared to Okg fertilizer Nlha, although not all yield increases were significantly greater. Comparison of Forage Production of Annual Legume in the Central Region of Korea (중부지방에서 일년생 콩과목초의 사초 생산성 비교)

  • Annual legume is being used as an important source of protein for farm animals and an ingredient for nitrogen fertilizers. There are, however, difficulties in selecting appropriate cultivar and forage management technique. The objective of this study is to select the best performing cultivars and evaluate a forage value on annual legume at two locations (Suwon and Sunghwan) for 1 year (1999${\sim}$2000). All cultivars shown a seedling vigor and lodging resistance of 8 rating or higher. Crimson and rose clover showed that they are appropriate for overwintering, but ;Laser; (35.9%) and 'Nitro'(9.1%) of persian clover variety did not overwinter well from 1999 to 2000. Flower stage was observed 4th of May for 'Tibbee', 6th of May for 'Contea' crimson clover, and 29th of April for 'Bolta balansa' rose clover. DM yield of a crimson clover 'Contea' (4,218kg/ha) was the highest among the legume forage. A crimson clover 'Tibbee' and rose clover 'Bolta balansa' also had a high production yield (3,874 and 3,828kg/ha). Calculations of relative feed value (RFV) based on the acid and neutral detergent fiber (ADF and NDF) of annual legume were over 125, which means that quality was high. According to the results of this study, crimson and rose clovers are recommended due to their high winter survival rate and high DM yield. Persian clover is not recommended because of a low overwintering rate at the Central region in Korea.

Forage Yield and Quality of Summer Grain Legumes and Forage Grasses in Cheju Island

  • Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.), mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilcz.], cowpea [V. unguiculata (L.) Walp.], adzuki bean [V. angularis (Willd.) Ohwi & Ohashi], maize [Zea mays L.], sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], sorghum $\times$ sudangrass [So bicolor intraspecific hybrid], and Japanese millet [Echinochloa crusgalli var. frumentacea (Link) W.F. Wight] were grown at two planting dates (18 June and 15 July) at Cheju in 1997 to select the best forage legumes adapted to Cheju Island for grass-legume forage rotation. Averaged across planting dates and cultivars, dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), and total digestible nutrient (TDN) yields were 5,646, 1,056, and 3,637 kg/ha for soybean, 4,458, 676, and 2,661 kg/ha for mungbean, 3,289, 553, and 2,055 kg/ha for cowpea, 3,931, 674, and 2,489 kg/ha for adzuki bean, 12,695, 969, and 7,642 kg/ha for maize, 17,071, 1,260, and 8,857 kg/ha for sorghum, 16,355, 1,163, and 8,543 kg/ha for sorghum $\times$ sudangrass hybrid, and 8,288, 929, and 4,091 kg/ha for Japanese millet. Soybean was higher in CP, ether extract (EE), and TON content but was lower in nitrogen free extract content compared with the three other legumes. The legumes had much higher CP (13.7 to 21.9%), EE (2.42 to 6.23%), and TDN (58.7 to 69.9%) content but lower in crude fiber (CF) content (17.3 to 25.3%) than did the grasses tested except maize which had relatively lower CF content but higher TDN content. These results suggest that soybean could be the best forage legume for grass-legume forage rotation in the Cheju region.

Esterase Isozyme Banding Pattern in Wild Legume Plants (야생 콩과식물의 Esterase Isozyme Banding Pattern에 관한 연구)

  • Starch gel electrophoresis was used to examine the banding pattern of Esterase isozyme in the leaf, root-nodule and seedling of four wild legume species, Trifolim repense, Glycine soja, Phaseolus nipponensis and Vigna uexillata. The number of band, enzyme activity and migrating rate of esterase isozyme varies depending on the species and tissues of legume plants. The isozyme banding pattern in the cotyledon and radicle of T. repense showed same pattern, however, the number of band were varible among the cotyledon of G. soja, P. nipponensis and V. vexzllata, respectively. Est-1 in the leaf of G. soja, V, vexillata. root-nodule of G. soja and seedling of V. vexillata expreesed the highest enzyme activity. The Est-1 showed the rapidest migrating rate among the isozymes.

  • Horizontal starch gel electrophoresis, follow by enzyrne-specific staining, separate and visualize several legume esterase isozyme. Using extracts prepared from cotyledon, radicle and plumule of legume seedlings germinated 5 days. The results were as follows. 1. The number and staining intensity of esterase isozyme bands varies depending on the plant species. tissues and developmental stage. 2. Bands in the cotyledon of field bean seedling expressed 4 and 1 in radicle. 3. In soybean cultivars, cotyledon of IIwangkum-kong had 3 bands and 1 band in the examined tissues of Paldal-kong and Jangkyung-kong seedling. 4. The cotyledon and radicle of french bean seedling had 3 bands, respectively. 5. The highest esterase isozyme activity appears to be expressed in the cotyledon and radicle of french bean, as indicated by intensity of stain, with the Paldal-kong particulary active.
