  • Understanding the nonlinear flow caused by orographic effects can be valuable in siting of new businesses, industries, and transportation facilities. In spite of recent work on large-amplitude waves and wave breaking, the studies of flow around large scale mountains have just begun. The generative mechanism of lee vortices in the lee of large scale mountain is investigated by Ertel's theorem. The CSU RAMS is used as a numerical model. According to the numerical results, the isentropes are depressed behind the large scale mountains. This means the vortex lines must run upward and downward along the depression surface because vortex lines adhere to isentropic surfaces. Therefore, the vertically oriented vorticity can be formed in the lee of the large scale mountain. This vorticity plays an important role for orographic precipitation, because strong vertical velocity and cloud bands are developed along isothermal deformation surface.

  • Optically anisotropic rotating balls were disposed in a monolayer, and controllably closely packed with respect to one another in the monolayer. The close packed monolayer configuration provided high brightness and improved contrast. The monolayer rotating ball display (MRB) electrically demonstrated a fast response time of approximately 40 msec at a voltage of 30 V. Measurements of the rotation as a function of voltage led to surface charge density for the balls in the range of 3-4 ${\mu}C/m^2$.

  • Over the past decades, the Lee-Carter model [1] has attracted much attention from various demography-related fields in order to project the future mortality rates. In the Lee-Carter model, the speed of mortality improvement is stochastically modeled by the so-called mortality index and is used to forecast the future mortality rates based on the time series analysis. However, the modeling is applied to long time series and thus an important structural change might exist, leading to potentially large long-term forecasting errors. Therefore, in this paper, we are interested in detecting the structural change of the Lee-Carter model and investigating the actuarial implications. For the purpose, we employ the tests proposed by Coelho and Nunes [2] and analyze the mortality data for six countries including Korea since 1970. Also, we calculate life expectancies and whole life insurance premiums by taking into account the structural change found in the Korean male mortality rates. Our empirical result shows that more caution needs to be paid to the Lee-Carter modeling and its actuarial applications.

  • This paper suggests a genealogy of romance in Chang-rae Lee's Native Speaker, A Gesture Life, and The Surrendered. A flexible textual performance and literary strategy spanning issues of beauty and love, romance in Lee registers the writer's distinctive diasporic negotiation with sites of departure and arrival, in particular with traumatic histories of the m/other country. Native Speaker resolves the crisis of public immigrant love within the compromise in the domestic melodrama. As Lee turns to the scenes of historical trauma in the twentieth century transpacific, romance becomes a key strategy through which his aestheticized framing and deframing of comfort woman is performed and the Korean War finds odd comfort in the aesthetic energy of perverse care in Italy. Through the dehistoricizing movement outside of the historical into the realm of myth and nostalgia, Lee's diasporic romance breaks away from mandates of representation and works within the excess of mistranslation.

  • We present a detailed analysis of the light extraction efficiency (LEE) of a core-shell nanorod light emitting diode (LED) using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations. We found that the LEE has a deep dependence on source positions and polarization directions based on the calculated LEE results for every x and z position inside the core-shell nanorod structure. The LEEs are different for the upper part (pyramid) and the lower part (sidewall) of the core-shell nanorod owing to total internal reflection (TIR) and the generated optical modes in the structure. As a result, the LEE of sidewall is much larger than that of pyramid. The averaged LEE of the core-shell nanorod LED is also investigated with variable p-GaN thickness, n-GaN thickness, and height for the design guidelines for the optimized LEE of core-shell nanorod LEDs.
