An experimental study of a dual swirl burner was conducted to analyze NOx emission in the lean conditions. The dual swirl burner is composed of a combination of swirling jet premixed(main section) and diffusion flames(pilot section). It was operated with a co-swirling configuration and overall equivalence ratios between 0.6 and 0.8. The purpose of this study is to analyze experimentally the characterization of flame temperature and NOx concentration in reacting zone and to supply the useful experimental data for numerical simulations. The measurements of temperature and NOx concentration were captured using a thin digitally-compensated thermocouple and a sampling quartz probe with quenching effect of sudden expansion, and were measured by the NOx analyzer of chemiluminescence method. We could analyse the NOx emission characteristics comparing the temperature distributions in the lean equivalence ratios.
Flickering behaviors of lean premixed flame of propane/air and methane/air flame anchored by a pilot flame in a tube were investigated. Unsteady behaviors of the flame were monitored by a high speed ICCD camera and the flickering frequency was defined as the number of flame curvatures passing a fixed spatial point in a second. Unlike previous studies in which flames are in open condition so that the flickering mechanism is an unstable interaction of hot buoyant products with the ambient air, flames in this study are surrounded by a tube which means they are not open to ambient air, so that there is no interaction between hot buoyant products and ambient air. Despite the fact, there exists flickering phenomena and the flickering frequency ranges from 10 Hz to 50 Hz which is wider compared to previous studies. We relate the flickering mechanism to flame-generated vorticity and analytic solution for locally approximated flow is used. As a result, the relationship between flickering wavelength and dimensionless vorticity is acquired and the cause of higher range of flickering frequency is explained.
The knowledge of flame structure is essential for control of combustion instability phenomena. Some results of an experimental study on mechanism of naturally occurring combustion oscillations with a single dominant frequency are presented. Tests were conducted in a laboratory-scale dump combustor at atmospheric pressure. Sound level meter was used to track the pressure wave inside the combustor. The observed instability was a longitudinal mode with a frequency of $\sim341.8Hz$. Instability map was obtained at the condition of inlet temperature of $360^{\circ}C$, mean velocities of $8.5\sim10.8m/s$ and well premixed mixture. It showed that combustion instability was susceptible to occur in the lean conditions. In this study, unstable flame was observed from stoichiometric to 0.7 in overall equivalence ratio. At selected unstable conditions, phase-resolved OH chemiluminescence images were captured to investigate flame structure with various mean velocities. As mean velocity is increased, the flame grows and global heat release was changed. Due to these effects, combustion instability can be maintained at more lean air-fuel ratio. Also, these results give an insight to the controlling mechanism for an increasing heat release at maximum pressure.

This study investigates the effects of different kind fuels on the flame structure by using the numerical simulation in triple flame made by a co-flowing fuels-air stream based on the elementary chemical reaction mechanism. Methane and Hydrogen were used as fuel for this study. In order to interpret the result of the study on numerical simulation Skeletal chemistry is employe as the elementary chemical reaction mechanism for methane Gutheil's as an offset ele-mentary chemical reaction mechanism for hydrogen. The result of this study is as follows. In com-parison between the apparent burning velocity change of triple flame and the one-dimensional pre-mixed flame hydrogen fuel flame is higher than methane fuel flame. The flame thrusts out for-ward in the down stream of the boundary between air-fuel mixture and air stream and a part of the flow is bent and forks out in this protruding flame so that a triple flame is originated.
This study is to investigate the combustion instability of the variation of combustion chamber length in dual swirl gas turbine model combustor. When equivalence ratio was fixed at 1.1, as the length of the combustion chamber increases the value of the frequency decreased in 7kW while the value of the frequency was constant in 4kW. The analysis of flame behaviors by high speed camera was conducted to identify such trend.

Experiments were performed on the laminar premixed flame stabilized in a porous medium to know whether the flame downstream of the combustor exists or not. In previous theoretical studies, a stable flame has been predicted in the downstream region of the combustor, but it has never been observed in experiments. In this study, a stable downstream flame could be obtained for the lower burning velocity through circumferential heating by a blue flame positioned outside the periphery of the specially devised combustor. The existence of the stable downstream flame was confirmed by a direct photography of soot line, and temperature measurements. The effect of combustor diameter to flame stability was also considered. As the diameter of the combustor increases, the lean flammability limit was extended.
In order to reduce NOx emissions in the 20kw class microturbines under development, the low NOx characteristics, as being an application to the lean premixed combustion technology, have been investigated. The study has been conducted at the conditions of high temperature and pressure. Air from a compressor with the temperature of 500K to 650K and the pressure of 0.3bar gauge to 0.7bar gauge, was supplied to the combustor through an air preheat-treatment. Sampling exhaust gases were measured at the immediate exit of the combustor. for the effect of temperature on NO and CO emissions. though NOx was increased, CO was decreased with increasing inlet air temperature. With increasing inlet air pressure, NOx and CO were increased also. NOx was decreased, but CO was increased with increasing inlet air mass flow rate. The test has been performed on the equivalent ratios of 0.10 to 0.25 in a lean region. NOx was increased with increasing equivalent ratios, but CO was decreased as an influence of flame temperature. In the very lean region of the equivalent ratio below 0.12, CO was increased suddenly, due to instability. As the results of this study, NOx and CO are found to be reduced to the similar level at the same time when operated at optimal conditions.

Experimental investigations were carried out in an atmospheric pressure, optically accessible and laboratory-scale dump combustor operating on methane gas. The objective of this study was to obtain the phase-resolved gas temperatures at different phases of the oscillating pressure cycle during unstable combustion. CARS temperature measurements were made at several spatial locations under lean premixed conditions to get the information on temperature field within the combustor. Also the effect of incomplete fuel-air mixing on phase-resolved temperature fluctuation was investigated. Results including phase-resolved averaged temperature, normalized standard deviation and temperature probability distribution functions (PDFs) were provided in this paper. Temperature PDFs gave an insight on the flame behavior. And strong correlation between phase-resolved temperature profile and pressure cycle was observed. Results of the phase-resolved high temperature gave an additional information on the perturbation of equivalence ratio at flame as well as the effect of mixing quality on NOx emission characteristics.

The blowoff phenomenon was experimentally investigated in a ducted combustor according to the acoustic excitation. The blowoff equivalence ratio rapidly increases at specific acoustic excitation frequencies. A resonance phenomenon occurs when the excitation frequency approaches the harmonic frequency of the combustor. The resonance increases the velocity fluctuation in the combustor and the infiltration velocity of the unburned gas in the shear layer. Consequently, the mixture velocity exceeds the burning velocity and the blowoff occurs at the higher equivalence ratio.
