Stability limits of a double concentric jets flame and the structure of recirculation zone formed behind a thick burner rim were investigated. To control the flame stability, swirled secondary air flow ranging 0.13-0.71 of swirl number, and air, fuel, and mixture gas injection from an injection coaxial slit set on burner rim were examined. Flame stability limits, flame shapes, lengths of recirculation zone, temperature distributions, residence times, air ratios in the recirculation zone were measured. The following results were obtained. (1) Lean limits were considerably widened by a strong swirl because the recirculation zone was enlarged. (2) At fuel injection as well as mixture injection, lean limits were also extended. But, air injection had no effect on stability limits. (3) Injected gas seems to diffuse into the recirculation zone through its outer boundary surrounded the secondary air. Therefore, chemical structure in the recirculation zone with air injection coincides with that without injection. (4) Injection position had no effect on flame stability limits.

The aim of this paper is to investigate combustion characteristics of lean premixed mixture stabilized by catalytic surface reaction. The catalytic combustor consisted of a catalyst bed and a thermal combustor. The catalyst bed was made of two stage, Pd catalyst in the first stage and Pt catalyst in the second stage. Auto ignition of lean mixture took place in the thermal combustor. Ignition temperature was about $810{\sim}820^{\circ}C$ at the fuel-air ratio of 1.5~3.0 % and the mixture velocity of 11~18m/sec. The position of flame front in the thermal combustor moved toward back as preheat temperature increased and fuel-air ratio decreased. The f1ame supported by surface reaction was stabilized without any flame stabilizers. NOx emissions from the catalytic combustor were below 2.0 ppm ($O_2$ 15 %) when gas temperature was limited below $1350^{\circ}C$. This result demonstrates that NOx emission from the catalytic combustor is much low comparing with conventional combustors.

In this study a quasi-dimensional model is developed to predict the combustion process and emissions of a GDI engine under ultra-lean conditions. Combustion of a GDI engine condition is modeled as two simultaneous processes to consider significant fuel stratification. The first process is premixed flame propagation described as burning in a hemispherically propagating flame. The second is diffusion-controlled combustion modeled as mixing of multiple spray zones in the burned gas region. Mixing is an important factor in ultra-lean conditions leaving stratified mixture of developing sprays behind the propagating premixed flame. Sheet breakup and Hiroyasu models are applied to predict the velocity of a hollow cone spray. Validation is performed against measured pressures and NOx and CO emissions at different load and rpm conditions in the test engine.
Edge flames have been interested as a basic structure that is concerned to flame stabilization and re-ignition of non-premixed flames. The edge flame consists of a lean premixed flame, a rich premixed flame, and a diffusion flame. In order to investigate fundamental structures of the edge flames at the conditions near the flammability limits, edge flames were stabilized within a heated narrow channel. Highly diluted partially premixed methane was used, and the flow rates of air and the partially premixed mixture were controlled. Various flame behaviors, including a transition between ordinary edge flames and premixed flames, were observed. Flame stabilization characteristics were examined as well. All flame stabilization conditions in this study showed a similar trend: characteristic time scales were inversely proportional to the equivalence ratio defined at the burner inlet. Finally, an interesting flame structure having a weak diffusion branch enveloped by a closed premixed branch was found near the flammability limits even in a fuel-air mixing layer. This structure was named as a "flame-drop" and the importance of this structure was first suggested.
The CH* chemiluminescence of premixed flames and their dependency on fuel types has been experimentally investigated on laminar methane and propane premixed flames. The measured chemiluminescence intensities are observed linearly proportional to the fuel flow rate, which could be interpreted as the CH* chemiluminescence signal is linearly proportional to the heat release rate under fuel lean conditions. The effect of equivalence ratio could be expressed by an exponential function as ${I_{CH*}}^{\propto}\;a_1\;{\exp}(b_1{\Phi})$, where $a_1\;=\;0.00054$ and $b_1\;=\;4.60$ for methane and $a_1\;=\;0.0056$ and $b_1\;=\;5.02$ for propane. Oscillating flames showed the temporal fluctuation of chemiluminescence intensity: however, the time averaged values are virtually identical to those of quiescent flames under the same fuel flow rate and equivalence ratio conditions. This observation suggests that there is no significant flame stretch effect on chemiluminescence intensity, in average values.
This paper describes the forced flame response in a turbulent premixed gas turbine combustor. The fuel was premixed with the air upstream of a choked inlet to avoid equivalence ratio fluctuations. To impose the inlet flow velocity, a siren type modulation device was developed using an AC motor, rotating and static plates. Measurements were made of the velocity fluctuation in the nozzle using hot wire anemometry and of the heat release fluctuation in the combustor using chemiluminescence emission. The test results showed that flame length as well as geometry was strongly dependent upon modulation frequency in addition to operating conditions such as inlet velocity. Convection delay time between the velocity perturbation and heat release fluctuations was calculated using phase information of the transfer function, which agreed well with the results of flame length measurements. Also, basic characteristics of the flame nonlinear response shown in the current test conditions were introduced.

The effects of preferential diffusion of hydrogen in interacting counterflow $H_2$-air and CO-air premixed flames were investigated numerically. The global strain rate was varied in the range $30-5917s^{-1}$, where the upper bound of this range corresponds to the flame-stretch limit. Preferential diffusion of hydrogen was studied by comparing flame structures for a mixed average diffusivity with those where the diffusivities of H, $H_2$ and $N_2$ were assumed to be equal. Flame stability diagrams are presented, which show the mapping of the limits of the concentrations of $H_2$ and CO as a function of the strain rate. The main oxidation route for CO is $CO+O_2{\rightarrow}CO_2+O$, which is characterized by relatively slow chemical kinetics; however, a much faster route, namely $CO+OH{\rightarrow}CO_2+H$, can be significant, provided that hydrogen from the $H_2$-air flame is penetrated and then participates in the CO-oxidation. This modifies the flame characteristics in the downstream interaction between the $H_2$-air and CO-air flames, and can cause the interaction characteristics at the rich and lean extinction boundaries not to depend on the Lewis number of the deficient reactant, but rather to depend on chemical interaction between the two flames. Such anomalous behaviors include a partial opening of the upper lean extinction boundary in the interaction between a lean $H_2$-air flame and a lean CO-air flame, as well as the formation of two islands of flame sustainability in a partially premixed configuration with a rich $H_2$-air flame and a lean CO-air flame. At large strain rates, there are two islands where the flame can survive, depending on the nature of the interaction between the two flames. Furthermore, the preferential diffusion of hydrogen extends both the lean and the rich extinction boundaries.

Measurements of heat release are very important for controling combustion instabilities, which are closely connected with combustion instabilities. $OH^{\ast}$ images were acquired through a ICCD in this study, which were in use as indicating index of the reacting region, global and local heat release rate in the lean premixed combustion. The objectives of this study are to see the effect of equivalence ratio on global heat release rate and local Rayleigh index distribution. The local Rayleigh index distribution was acquired by information from central section of flame. This information was from the line-of-sight images which were inverted by the Abel de-convolution. In each condition, the mean value of heat release increased exponentially with equivalence for a periodic time. Local Rayleigh index distribution cleary showed the region of amplifying or damping the combustion instability as the equivalence ratio increased. This could provide an insight on the region of combustion instability and the structure of flames on the equivalence ratio.
This study has numerically modeled the combustion processes of the turbulent swirling premixed lifted syngas flames in the low-swirl burner (LSB). In these turbulent swirling premixed flames, the four tangentially-injected air jets induce the turbulent swirling flow which plays the crucial role of stabilizing the turbulent lifted flames. In the present approach, the turbulence-chemistry interaction is represented by the level-set based flamelet model. Numerical results indicate clearly that the present level-set based flamelet approach has realistically simulated the structure and stabilization mechanism of the turbulent swirling premixed lifted flames in the low-swirl burner. Computations are made for the wide range of the syngas chemical composition and the dilution level at two pressure conditions (1.0, 5.0 bar). Numerical results indicate that the lifted height in the LSB is increased by decreasing the H2 percentage and increasing the dilution level at the given equivalence ratio. It is also found that the flashback is occurred for the hydrogen composition higher than 80% at the equivalence ratio, 0.8. However, at the syngas composition range in the IGCC system, the stable lean-premixed lifted flames are formed at the low-swirl burner.

Liquefied Petroleum Gas(LPG) has attracted attention as a alternative fuel. The lean-burn LPG direct injection engine is a promising technology because it has an advantage of lower harmful emissions. This study aims to investigate the effect of combustion strategy and excess air ratio on combustion and emission characteristics in lean-burn LPG direct injection engine. Fuel consumption and combustion stability were measured with change of the ignition timing and injection timing at various air/fuel ratio conditions. The lean combustion characteristics were evaluated as a function of the excess air ratio with the single injection and multiple injection strategy. Furthermore, the feasibility of lean operation with stratified mixture was assessed when comparing the combustion and emission characteristics with premixed lean combustion.
