Lean premixed combustion has been considered as one of the promising solutions for the reduction of NOx emissions from gas turbines. However, unstable combustion of lean premixed flow becomes a real challenge on the way to design a reliable, highly efficient dry low NOx gas turbine combustor. Contrary to a conventional diffusion type combustion system, characteristics of premixed combustion significantly depend on a premixing degree of combusting flow. Combustion behavior in terms of stability has been studied in a model gas turbine combustor burning natural gas and air. Incompleteness of premixing is identified as significant perturbation source for inducing unstable combustion. Application of a simple convection time lag theory can only predict instability modes but cannot determine whether instability occurs or not. Low frequency perturbations are observed at the onset of instability and believed to initiate the coupling between heat release rate and pressure fluctuations.

The lean premixed technique has been proven very efficient in reducing NOx emissions from gas turbine combustors. However combustion instability is susceptible to occur in lean premixed combustor. So laboratory-scale dump combustor was used to understanding the underlying mechanisms causing combustion instabilities. In this study, tests were conducted at atmospheric pressure and inlet air was up to $360^{\circ}C$ with natural gas. The observed instability was a longitudinal mode with a frequency of ${\sim}341.8Hz$. At selected unstable conditions, phase-resolved OH chemiluminescence images were captured to investigate flame structure with various equivalence ratio. Combustion instability was observed to occur at higher value of equivalence ratio(>0.69). This study was performed to investigate the effects of equivalence ratio and fuel split measuring NOx and acoustic wave. The results reveal the effect of fuel-air unmixedness on lean premixed combustor.
This study proposes a new stratified charge system for low emission and ultra lean burn. In order to examine combustion characteristics of the new system, sparkplug with a hole at positive pole and a common CNG injector for injecting fuel were used in this study as injector-type spark plug. The new stratified charge system injects fuel of extremely small quantities and ignites mixture around sparkplug gap. Also, the system was fitted in a visualized constant volume chamber. Then, for analysis of the combustion characteristics, we examined combustion pressure, lean inflammable limit, and visualized combustion flame according to equivalence ratio by comparison with homogeneous charge (HC) method and the new stratified charge (SC) method. As results of this study, in the case of using this system, the propagation speed of initial flame was increased and total combustion period was reduced in the ultra lean burn in the same equivalence ratio. These phenomena occurred clearly under the conditions of lean equivalence ratio. Furthermore, the lean inflammable limit of mixture was extended by using the injector-type spark plug.
Dynamic characteristics of combustion occurring in various combustion devices have been extensively studied since most of high-performance combustion devices are susceptible to hazardous, unstable combustion that deteriorates combustor's lifetime. One of the most severe unstable combustion phenomena is high-frequency combustion instability in which heat release fluctuations from combustion are coupled to resonant modes of the combustor. Here in this study, characteristics of high-frequency combustion instabilities observed in three different combustion devices have been presented. Lean-premixed combustion instability occurs mainly due to equivalence ratio fluctuations which induce large heat release oscillations at lean conditions. Liquid-fueled combustion also shows high-frequency instability from energy coupling between pressure and heat release oscillations.
The aim of this study is to investigate advantages that the catalytically supported combustor can have. For this purpose, the catalytic combustor was prepared which consisted of the catalyst bed and the thermal combustor at the downstream of the catalyst bed. The catalyst bed consisted of two-stage. Pd catalyst was installed in the first stage of the catalyst bed, and Pt catalyst was placed in the second stage. Results showed that the catalytically supported combustion had some advantages. One was that auto-ignition occurred in the thermal combustor. This can give merit that an igniter is not necessary to start flame ignition. Other was that the catalytically supported combustion was stable for lean mixture. When combustion of lean mixture was not supported by surface reaction it became unstable so that big combustion noise was created. Therefore, it is desirable to support flame by catalytic surface reaction to obtain the stable combustion of lean mixture.
In an IGCC plant, one of the most important issues on fuel flexibility in the lean premixed combustor is combustion instabilities. They are characterized by large amplitude pressure oscillations which are caused by unsteady heat release from the flames. The relationship between the unsteady heat release and flow oscillation can be qualitatively and quantitatively explained by flame transfer function. This paper introduces combustion instability modeling methods based on the flame transfer function approach.

Gas flow characteristics within the cylinder is important factors in impoving lean combustion stability. This paper shows the effects of various flow fields generated by a swirl control valve(SCV) on combustion process in a 4-valve spark ignition engine. An impulse swirl/tumble meter was used to elucidation the steady-state flow characteristics, and a rotating grating type LDV was developed to measure the mean velocity and tunbulence intensity in relation to the crank angle. These methodologies were applied to clarify the correlation between gas flow characteristics and combustion stability at a lean air fuel ratio. An analysis of the correlation revealed the gas flow conditions required to optimize a lean-burn system.
The development of a low-pollution burner is important for saving energy and preserving the environment. A low-pollution burner can be produced by lean-mixture combustion and general combustion technology. The flammable limit of premixed flame is narrower than that of diffusion flame. Producing a lean mixture of fuel results in an effective combustion condition, which in turn produces high load and low pollution. In this study, it was found that the influx of $Q_2$ had an effect on extending the lean flammable limits and flame stabilization in a doubled jet burner. And the flame, consisting of small eddies, can be stabilized by the nozzle neck phenomena.

Recently, because of the increased oil prices globally, there have been studies investigating the improvement of fuel-conversion efficiency in internal combustion engines. The improvements realized in thermal efficiency using lean combustion are essential because they enable us to realize higher thermal efficiency in gasoline engines because lean combustion leads to an increase in the heat-capacity ratio and a reduction of the combustion temperature. Gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines enable lean combustion by injecting fuel directly into the cylinder and controlling the combustion parameters precisely. However, the extension of the flammability limit and the stabilization of lean combustion are required for the commercialization of GDI engines. The reduction characteristics of three-way catalysts (TWC) for lean combustion engines are somewhat limited owing to the high excess air ratio and low exhaust gas temperature. Therefore, in the present study, we assess the reaction of exhaust gases and their production in terms of the development of efficient TWCs for lean-burn GDI engines at 2000 rpm / BMEP 2 bar operating conditions, which are frequently used when evaluating the fuel consumption in passenger vehicles. At the lean-combustion operating point, $NO_2$ was produced during combustion and the ratio of $NO_2$ increased, while that of $N_2O$ decreased as the excess air ratio increased.

Lean combustion is one of the most promising method for increasing engine efficiency and reducing the exhaust emission from SI gas engines. Due to the possibility of partial burn and misfire, however, under lean burn operation, stable flame kernel formation and fast burn rate are needed to guarantee a successful subsequent combustion. Experiment data were obtained on a single-cylinder CNG fueled SI engine to investigate the effect of direct injection, spark timing and variation of injection timing. Experimental results show that lean burn limit is ${\lambda}$=1.3 with port injection, and expansion of lean burn limit ${\lambda}$=1.4 with direct injection method, due to increase of turbulence intensity in cylinder and stratified charge. Combustion duration in lean region is improved by using the variation of injection timing.
