Unsteady Nature of a Tip Leakage Vortex in an Axial Flow Fan (축류팬 익단누설와류의 비정상 특성)

  • Unsteady nature of a tip leakage vortex in an axial flow fan operating at a design and off-design operating conditions has been investigated by measuring the velocity fluctuation in a blade passage with a rotating hotwire probe sensor. Two hot-wire probe sensors rotating with the fan rotor were also introduced to obtain the cross-correlation coefficient between the two sensors located in the vortical flow as well as the fluctuating velocity. The results show that the vortical flow structure near the rotor tip can be clearly observed at the quasi-orthogonal planes to a tip leakage vortex. The leakage vortex is enlarged as the flow rate is decreased, thus resulting in the high blockage to main flow. The spectral peaks due to the fluctuating velocity near the rotor tip are mainly observed in the reverse flow region at higher flow rates than the peak pressure operating condition. However, no peak frequency presents near the rotor tip for near stall condition.

  • The flow characteristics in the blade passage of a low speed axial flow fan have been investigated by experimental analysis using a rotating hot-wire sensor for design and off-design operating conditions. The results show that the tip leakage vortex is moved upstream when flow rate is decreased, thus disturbing the formation of wake flow near the rotor tip. The tip leakage vortex interfaces with blade pressure surface, and results in high velocity fluctuation near the pressure surface. From the relative velocity distributions near the rotor tip, large axial velocity decay is observed at near stall condition, which results in large blockage compared to that at the design condition. Througout the flow measurements using a quasi-orthogonal measuring points to the tip leakage vortex, it is noted that the radial position of the tip leakage vortex is distributed between 94 and 96 percent span for all flow conditions. High spectrum density due to the large fluctuation of the tip leakage vortex is observed near the blade suction surface below the frequency of 1000 Hz at near stall condition.

  • Leakage vortices fonned near the blade tip cause an increase of total pressure loss near the casing endwall region and as a result, the efficiency of rotor decreases. The reduction of rotor efficiency is related to the size of tip clearance. In this study, the three-dimensional flow fields in an axial flow rotor were calculated with varying tip clearance under various flow rates, and the numerical results were compared with experimental ones. The effects of tip clearance and the of attack on the leakage vortex and overall performance, and the los9 distributions were investigated through numerical calculations. In this study, tip leakage flow rate and total pressure loss due to the tip clearance were evaluated using numerical results and approximate equations were presented to evaluate the reduction of rotor efficiency due to the tip leakage flow.

Electrical Characteristic Changes of ZnO Varistors by Energy Absorption

  • As a ZnO varistor is subjected to electrical and environmental stresses, it degrades gradually, which may result in power interruption by short circuit. This study investigates changes in the electrical characteristics of ZnO varistors due to deterioration owing to energy absorption, and determines the optimal parameters for on-line diagnosis of the varistor. Two types of varistors were used for an accelerated aging experiment involving the application of the $8/20{\mu}s$ standard lightning impulse current. The electrical characteristics in terms of the reference voltage, total leakage current, resistive leakage current, and third-harmonic component of the total leakage current were measured, and their change rates were analyzed. The results revealed that the total leakage current increased slightly with an increase in the varistor absorbed energy, while the resistive leakage current and the third-harmonic component increased apparently. Therefore, the third-harmonic component of the total leakage current was proposed as the optimal parameter for on-line monitoring of ZnO varistor conditions.

  • This study investigates the pressure leakage characteristics of a desiccant rotor with a brush-type air seal. Through a pressure leakage experiment, a correlation equation for the leakage air flow rate is obtained as a function of the air seal area and pressure difference. Using this equation, an air leakage model for the desiccant rotor is developed. By comparing simulation results with the experimental results for the desiccant rotor, the accuracy of the air leakage model is demonstrated. A performance test of a desiccant rotor with various air flow rates is carried out. Using the air leakage model, the effective mass flow rate and air leakage rate are found. In addition, the characteristics of the air leakage are analyzed for a desiccant cooling system using the developed air leakage model.

Comparison of Had-Sewn and Mechanical Esophagogastric Anastomosis After Esophageal Resection for Cancer (식도암수술시 식도-위연결부 수기봉합과 기계봉합의 비교)

  • Background : the technical modality of esophagogastric anastomosis plays an important part in the factors leading to anastomotic leakage and stricture. Objective : The objective of this study was to compare the leakage and stricture rates between the different anastomosis techniques. Materials and Methods : A retrospective study was undertaken in the patients with esophageal cancer who underwent a esophagectomy. Hand-sewn anastomosis was performed in one layer with interrupted sutures(Manual group). The stapler group was divided into two subgroups, such as PCEEA group and Endo-GIA group. Results : The differences of preoperative patient profiles between the groups were not significant. Overall mortality fates were 5% in manual group, 5% in PCEEA group and 11.5% in Endo-GIA group. Fewer anastomotic leakage occurred in manual group(5%) than in PCEEA group(10%) or in Endo-GIA group(15.4%). The postoperative stricture rate was higher in PCEEA group(35%) than in manual group(5%) or in Endo-GIA group(0%) Conclusion : Statistically, there were no significant differences in the anastomotic leakage and stricture rates between the hand-sewn and mechanical anastomosis. But the stricture rate was lower in the group using the linear stapling device and the leakage rate was lower in the hand-sewn group than the other groups.

X-ray Response Characteristic of Zn in the Polycrystalline Cd1-xZnxTe Detector for Digital Radiography

  • The Cdl-xZnxTe film was fabricated by thermal evaporation for the flat-panel X-ray detector. The stoichimetric ratio and the crystal structure of a polycrystalline Cd$_{1-x}$ Zn$_{x}$Te were investigated by EPMA and XRD, respectively. The leakage current and X-ray sensitivity of the fabricated films were measured to analyze the X-ray response characteristic of Zn in the polycrystalline CdZnTe thin film. The leakage current and the output charge density of Cd$_{0.7}$Zn$_{0.3}$Te thin film were measured to 0.37 nA/cm$^2$ and 260 pc/cm$^2$ at an applied voltage of 2.5 V/${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, respectively. Experimental results showed that the increase of Zn doping rates in Cd$_{1-x}$ Zn$_{x}$Te detectors reduced the leakage current and improved the signal to noise ratio significantly.

Frequency Characteristics of Fluctuating Velocity According to Flow Rates in a Tip Leakage Vortex and a Wake Flow in an Axial Flow Fan (축류 홴의 익단누설와류 및 후류에서 유량에 따른 변동속도의 주파수 특성)

Two hot-wire probe sensors rotating with the fan rotor. a fixed and a moving ones, were introduced to obtain a cross-correlation coefficient between two sensors as well as the fluctuating velocity. The results show that the spectral peaks due to the fluctuating velocity near the rotor tip are mainly observed in the reverse flow region of higher flow rates than those in the peak pressure operating condition. However, no peak frequency presents near the rotor tip for near stall condition. Detailed wake flow just downstream of the rotor blade was also measured by the rotating hot-wire sensor. The peak frequency of a high velocity fluctuation due to Karman vortex shedding in the wake region is mainly observed at the higher flow rate condition than that in the design point.

  • Substantial losses behind axial flow rotor are generated by the wake, various vortices in the hub region and the tip leakage vortex in the tip region. Particularly, the leakage vortex formed near blade tip is one of the main causes of the reduction of performance, generation of noise and aerodynamic vibration in downstream. In this study, the three-dimensional flow fields in an axial flow rotor were calculated with varying tip clearance under various flow rates, and the numerical results were compared with experimental ones. The numerical technique was based on SIMPLE algorithm using standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model(WFM) and Launder & Sharma's Low Reynolds Number $k-{\varepsilon}$ model(LRN). Through calculations, the effects of tip clearance and attack angle on the 3-dimensional flow fileds behind a rotor and leakage flow/vortex were investigated. The presence of tip leakage vortex, loci of vortex center and its behavior behind the rotor for various tip clearances and attack angles was described well by calculation.

A study on the air leakage performance improvement of duct coupling for temporary ventilation of long subsea tunnel (초장대 해저터널의 공사중 덕트 접속부의 누풍 성능 개선에 관한 연구)

  • The construction of long sub-sea tunnel does not provide the favorable condition for the installation of ventilation system to be used during construction due to the constrained construction space. For the ventilation system required during construction, the artificial island where ventilation shaft is located is constructed at some location along the sub-sea tunnel route, which requires a high construction cost. Therefore, it is intended, as much as possible technically, to minimize the construction of artificial island. However, this requires a longer distance between ventilation shafts, there-by causing increased air leakage at the ventilation duct connection points due to the higher fan pressure being required to deliver ventilation air. Previously the air leakage was studied as an important issue. In this study experiments were carried out to develop the improved duct connection method considering various conditions such as, tunnel length, etc. Additionally, its performance results with leakage rates are shown and compared to the "S" class leakage rate of SIA. As a result, the new duct coupling type of improved method is analyzed as applicable to such a 30 km long tunnel with the leakage rate of $1.46mm^2/m^2$, which is better performance than SIA leakage rates.
